Though Margot Robbie isn't up for Best Actress, she's nominated in Best Picture with her husband, Tom Ackerley.
It's Valentine's Day, and love is in the air. To commemorate the occasion, let's consider this year's Academy Award nominations through the prism of romance, searching for couples among the contenders. Recognizing lovers together has been an Oscar tradition since the very start, from Lunt and Fontaine's matching Best Actor and Actress nomination in 1931 to last year's Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin. Even so, this season feels especially prone to honoring couples. I could find six of them while perusing the list, including in the Best Picture race. Though they're not represented in the star-studded acting categories, they still deserve acclaim and attention…...

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. But before we get too ahead of ourselves by predicting who might win this category, let’s take a look back at the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Production Design.
We’re going to take a look at the academy’s tastes here to see what type of films in what type of setting they nominate most. Then, we’ll try to apply those findings to this year’s race as we scrutinize the movies hoping for a nomination in this design category. Here we go.
These 10 winners seem like totally different movies but a closer look does show some similarities. Firstly, seven out of the 10 are set in the real world. “The Shape of Water...

Catherine Martin, the four-time Oscar-winning producer, costume designer and production designer of “Moulin Rouge,” “The Great Gatsby” and “Elvis,” says she is waiting to see what project Baz Luhrmann, her husband and longtime creative partner, will embark on next.
Martin is at the Red Sea Film Festival with Luhrmann, whom she started working with on his debut feature, 1992’s “Strictly Ballroom.” Since then, there have been a series of projects marked by their striking visual style, netting Martin a number of nominations and awards.
She spoke to Variety.
Following last year’s “Elvis,” what do you think will be your next project?
Baz hasn’t made any decisions. And I assiduously try not to get attached to any project when he’s in the process of deciding what he’s going to do. Because invariably, the one that I become attached to is not the one we end up doing.

The Aussies took over Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival this evening as Elvis filmmaker Baz Luhrmann sat down for a career Q&a with actor Chris Hemsworth.
“We’re a couple of Aussies telling Aussie stories,” Luhrmann described their chat, which was shaped around their experiences working in their home country and branching out internationally as artists.
Hemsworth told the packed crowd here in Jeddah that he’d arrived in the city from Brazil Comic Con, where he’d debuted the first trailer for Furiosa, the latest edition of the Mad Max series from George Miller — another Aussie that the pair said inspired them both to try their hand at craft.
“45 years ago, I saw George Miller make this film as a kid in Australia and it’s what Akira Kurosawa would have referred to as an immaculate reality. That inspired me and all of us as Australians...

Sure, 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins aren’t to be sniffed at. But the remarkable thing about Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is that it should have been nominated for more. Only one of the cast was nominated for an Oscar across all three films — that was for Best Supporting Actor for Sir Ian McKellen in 2002 for “The Fellowship of the Ring” — while there were a few other curious snubs that, in hindsight, just don’t make sense. So, there was actually more room to nominate this rightly-heralded trilogy of astounding films. With that in mind, here are five more Oscar nominations “The Lord of the Rings” should have landed.
Best Original Score: “The Two Towers”
The music of “The Lord of the Rings” has gone down as one of the best scores ever committed to film. Howard Shore‘s adored score is so top drawer it leaves you clamoring for more.

In 2004, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” became the film with joint-most Oscar wins of all time with a whopping 11 victories, matching the total tallies of both “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur.” Those 11 Academy Awards capped off a hugely successful trilogy of movies that collectively snagged 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins in total. But yet… Peter Jackson‘s film series, adapted from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, is so, so good that, well, it could have won more. That sounds greedy and over the top, of course, but if you take a look at each film’s nominations, it’s actually very feasible that any one of the three films could have turned the bid into a win. So, with that in mind, here are five Oscar nominations that “The Lord of the Rings” films could and perhaps should have turned into victories.

Brand ambassadors just don’t get better than Nicole Kidman, said Raynald Aeschlimann, the Switzerland-based CEO of Omega, at Thursday night’s party to celebrate the opening of Planet Omega, an exhibition highlighting the history of the brand that’s open to the public in New York City through November 19.
“She’s absolutely at the top of her career as an actress and a producer, and for 20 years she’s been very important to us,” Aeschlimann told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet. “We were just talking about our journey together, and it’s amazing that she decided 20 years ago to be on our side, because we weren’t the Omega of today.”
For Kidman, the feeling is mutual. “I’ve been with them not only because they’re classic, and I’m always drawn to classic lines, but also because they’re quality and they’re good people,...

Baz Luhrmann (Elvis) revisits his Australia feature film and transforms the nearly three-hour epic into the six-episode series Faraway Downs. The limited series will include an hour of footage that didn’t make the film’s final cut, as well as a different ending.
“I got the idea and started to relook at the footage and realized I’ve shot enough to do it as episodic storytelling through a revisiting of the piece, not necessarily as a better film than Australia, but a different variation on the themes,” explained Luhrmann in an interview with TheWrap. “I was able to use the strengths of episodic storytelling to breathe those things out and explore them in a stronger way.”
The feature film, and now the Hulu limited series it spawned, stars Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Bryan Brown, Brandon Walters, and Ben Mendelsohn. 2008’s Australia, which currently sits at 54% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Following the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown), plots to take her land and she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle drover (Jackman) to protect her ranch. The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s “Faraway Downs” has arrived — watch it at the top of the page right now.
Starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Bryan Brown, Brandon Walters, Ben Mendelsohn, the six-part miniseries is a reworking of Luhrmann’s 2008 film “Australia.” Recut by Luhrmann to produce what he calls a “richer telling,” it premieres Nov. 26 on Hulu.

Baz Luhrmann is looking at the benefits of streaming content.
The “Elvis” director recut his 2008 epic “Australia” for a Hulu limited series titled “Faraway Downs.” The film followed an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) who inherits a cattle range run by a cattle drover (Hugh Jackman). The limited series will have a new ending and a new soundtrack; “Australia” originally shot three endings, with only one making it into the theatrical release.
“I was inspired to re-approach my film ‘Australia’ to create ‘Faraway Downs’ because of the way episodic storytelling has been reinvigorated by the streaming world,” Luhrmann said in a press statement. “With over two million feet of film from the original piece, my team and I were able to revisit anew the central themes of the work.”
Six-episode limited series “Faraway Downs” will premiere at the closing night of the inaugural SXSW Sydney Screen Festival October 21, with Luhrmann in attendance.

I love Baz Luhrmann. Even when I don't like his movies, I love Baz Luhrmann. In our age, where big-budget movies are systematically stripped of style, personality, and beauty, the Australian auteur is one of the few filmmakers out there able to make every single frame of his motion pictures as dynamic and opulent as they can possibly be. He's a maximalist working on a grand scale, and no one else can make a movie remotely comparable to what he does. Every auteur has their imitators, but Luhrmann feels like a rarity, where his style is so singular and difficult to conceive that nobody even really tries.
As I said, though, not every Luhrmann picture is a home run. He constantly takes big swings, but if you want to be accurate in your baseball metaphors, you must acknowledge that not every swing connects. Because he is such a maximalist, the...

Since the early 2000s, there’s been a disappointing trend in movies away from full-fledged opening title sequences. Whether because of the desire to jump straight into the action or the impulse to keep the audience focused on a film’s story (rather than its creators), elaborate, artful opening title sequences, once commonplace, have become increasingly rare—which is too bad.
Great opening title sequences do a whole lot more than just show the names and guild memberships of those behind-the-scenes folks who make it all happen. They can do the critical early-movie work of establishing a movie’s mood and texture,...

Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.
With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. Amid concerns that the event could be affected by the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the Film Academy noted in its announcement about this year’s honorees that, “as a fundraiser, the event has been greenlit to move forward by WGA and SAG-AFTRA.” The event is set to raise funds to support exhibits, education initiatives and public programming.
Streep is set to receive the Icon Award, given to an artist whose career had a notable influence worldwide; Michael B. Jordan will receive the Vantage Award, given to an emerging artist or scholar working to challenge and contextualize existing dominant narratives around film; Winfrey will receive the Pillar Award, recognizing leadership and support for the Academy Museum; Coppola will receive the Visionary Award,...

Back in 2021, Chris Rowan, an art director and prop stylist for film and television, purchased the house that was shown to be the home of serial killer Buffalo Bill in Jonathan Demme‘s 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs (watch it Here), then turned it into a bed and breakfast. This September, Brooke Smith – who played Buffalo Bill captive Catherine Martin – will be returning to that house for the first time since production wrapped. Fans who visit the house during the three days Smith will be there will have the chance to get her autograph and take a picture with her in the well pit in the basement! Fans can also get guided tours of the house , which is located at 8 Circle St. in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania.

For the first time since the filming of the horror classic, The Silence of the Lambs actor Brooke Smith, who infamously played the unforgettable role of Catherine Martin, will return to visit Buffalo Bill’s House, the real location where the climax to the film was shot!
Brooke last stepped foot inside “Buffalo Bill’s House” over thirty years ago during the scene where she is rescued from the infamous ‘well’ in which she is held captive by the serial killer Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. In that scene, Brooke is led out of the house and through its doors into the arms of her mother, Senator Ruth Martin (played by Diane Baker).
Fans are now able to purchase a ticket for a meet and greet with Brooke Smith during the weekend of September 22-24 (multiple time slots are available).

Exclusive: Moulin Rouge! The Musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 luscious pop classic movie starring Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent, has recouped its costs — not only the $28 million Broadway price tag, but it also recouped sizable sums in London’s West End and Australia.
Luhrmann tells me that it’s “so gratifying that breaking even is such a big deal in the theater.”
As an antipodean, he’s especially gratified with Moulin Rouge!’s hit status in Australia.
“Australia, the English one, the Broadway one — they’ve all done it,” and “that’s down to the relentless drive that Carmen and her team in Australia, New York and London had to fulfill the dictum that the show must go on,” he says with brio in referring to Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Sydney-based Global Creatures, the principal production company behind Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
“Check with Carmen,” Luhrmann suggests.

Kevin Bakhurst, the newly appointed director-general of Ireland’s national broadcaster Rte, has stood down the company’s entire executive board following a pay scandal involving the broadcaster’s lead presenter.
Bakhurst announced the move in an email to Rte staff on Monday morning, his first day in office. In the email, Bakhurst said an interim leadership team would be appointed to continue running the organization before a permanent board is set, the BBC reported.
Bakhurst, who had stints in senior roles at the BBC and UK media regulator Ofcom, took over from former director general Dee Forbes, who resigned last month. Forbes’s resignation followed after it was discovered that RTÉ made undisclosed payments to its top presenter. An audit of the organization’s finances found presenter Ryan Tubridy was paid €345,000 more than what was declared publicly between 2017 and 2022.

It’s a question even the most fastidious awards watcher might have trouble answering off the top of their head: Who won the Oscars last year? While Best Picture winners are often impossible to forget, keeping track of who took home Academy Awards in the below-the-line categories often requires a little more work. Here’s who won at the ceremony last year — and a preview of the 2023 Oscars as well.
Who won the Oscars last year?
The 94th Oscars took place on March 27, 2022, a relative return to normal after the 2021 ceremony was directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. While the list of 2022 Oscar winners (seen below) represents the academy’s take on the best of 2021 in film, the ceremony won’t be remembered for those who took home Academy Awards. Instead, it will live in infamy as the show when Will Smith, who won Best Actor for “King Richard,” went...

Perhaps Tom Cruise and James Cameron were onto something.
The superstars behind two of the biggest films from the past year, Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water, didn’t attend the 2023 Oscars, where their blockbuster movies, despite being nominated for multiple awards, went home with only one award each, both in the craft categories.
While Cameron missed out on a best director nomination and Cruise was left out of the best actor contest, they were both nominated for best picture for their roles as producers on their long-gestating sequels.
But at least Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar 2 won one award each.
The Banshees of Inisherin went into the night up for nine awards, tied with All Quiet on the Western Front for the second-most nominations this year, and while All Quiet made noise winning four awards, Banshees left the 2023 Oscars empty-handed. Still, star Colin Farrell got some screen time,...

The 2023 Oscars hit almost all the right notes, with Jimmy Kimmel doing a terrific job of hosting, starting with a monologue that acknowledged last year’s slap heard around the world. Kimmel used his opening bit to point out there are 16 first-time acting nominees, including two from Encino Man – Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.
Kimmel poked fun at Babylon for being a bust at the box office and noted Batgirl is the first superhero to be defeated by an accounting department. He also confirmed James Cameron declined his invitation, joking that you know a show is too long when even Cameron can’t sit through it.
“Some of the critics are saying Jim Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a ‘Best Director’ nomination. And, well, I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility. He does have a point. I mean,...

Best Foreign Language Feature winner “All Quiet on the Western Front” won the Oscar crafts battle Sunday night, grabbing three prizes out of six for cinematography, production design, and score. That ties “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” for the most craft Oscar wins for an international feature. Edward Berger’s World War I epic from Netflix was also nominated for makeup/hairstyling, sound, and VFX.
Shockingly, Baz Luhrmann’s delirious musical biopic, “Elvis,” was blanked after also receiving six nominations, highlighted by Mandy Walker’s cinematography and the costume and production design of four-time Oscar winner Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!”). It was a particularly missed opportunity for Walker to break the glass ceiling again after her historic ASC victory. She represents only the third woman Dp to be nominated, following Ari Wegner (last year’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Rachel Morrison (2018’s “Mudbound”).

At the 2023 Oscars, Ruth E. Carter won her second statuette for her imaginative costume work on the futuristic Marvel film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This marked Carter’s second Oscar win for best costume design.
She previously won an Oscar in 2019 for Marvel’s Black Panther, becoming the first-ever Black woman to take home the statuette for costume design. Ruth E. Carter has become the first Black woman to win two Oscars.
Carter, who in 2019 became the first Black person to win the Oscar for costume design for her work on Marvel’s “Black Panther,” was recognized for the film’s sequel, “Wakanda Forever.” In her speech, she thanked director Ryan Coogler and asked late “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman to look after her own mother, who recently died at 101.
“Nice to see you again,” Carter said as she took the stage. “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman. She endure, she loves, she overcomes, she is every woman in this film. She is my mother. This past week, Mable Carter became an ancestor. This film prepared me for this moment. Chadwick, please take care of Mom. Ryan Coogler, Nate Moore, thank you both for your vision. Together, we are reshaping how culture is represented.

It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.
“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.

Hollywood’s biggest stars are making their red carpet debut at the 2023 Oscars.
This year’s fashion ranged from subtle champagne ensembles — which complemented the carpet color — to extremely bright and bold looks. Supporting actress nominee Jamie Lee Curtis, lead actor nominee Paul Mescal and presenter Samuel L. Jackson all sported champagne-colored outfits. Presenter Cara Delevingne and two of the supporting actress nominees, Stephanie Hsu and Angela Bassett, made bold statements with their vibrant, bright and voluminous ballgowns.
But even those who didn’t embrace the bright still shined. From former winners to this year’s nominees, women across the carpet were seen in sequins, including Jessica Chastain, Ana de Armas, Ariana DeBose, Eva Longoria, Lauren Ridloff, Malala Yousafzai, Catherine Martin and Nicole Kidman. Others stunned in white, from lead actress nominees Michelle Yeoh and Michelle Williams to presenters Halle Berry, Emily Blunt, Mindy Kaling and Florence Pugh.
