As the controversy surrounding comedian Dave Chappelle’s Netflix special The Closer continues, his peers are reaching out in support.
Laugh Factory founder Jamie Masada issued a call for comedians to rally behind Chappelle in an open letter, which was picked up by the Los Angeles Times. .
Masada called on comedians, their managers, and comedy club owners to build support for Chappelle “from his own kin” and those who “truly understand him.”
“What we are witnessing is an attack on the independence of comedy and the freedoms that make comedy the most organic, noncommercial form of entertainment,” Masada wrote in an open letter.
“If we don’t stand up for one another it won’t just be one of us that loses this freedom — it will be all of us — and once this freedom is gone, the doors of comedic expression will be sealed shut,” he said. “There’s no going back.

Los Angeles — The role of female talk show hosts in late-night TV broadcast network history, all 50-plus years of it, can be summed up in two words: Joan Rivers. It takes just another two – Arsenio Hall – to do the same for minorities.
There's no indication that's going to change in the latest round of musical chairs involving "Tonight" and "Late Night." All the NBC, ABC and CBS showcase jobs at 11:30 p.m. Eastern and later appear likely to remain securely in white men's hands.
Jay Leno is handing off to Jimmy Fallon, with speculation tagging Seth Meyers as his likely successor. Meanwhile, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Craig Ferguson and Carson Daly are sitting pretty, without the faintest drumbeat of a pair of advancing high heels to signal a threat.
There have been alternatives bandied about – Chelsea Handler, black comedian-writer Aisha Tyler – but no hints they or others are getting traction.

He had no intentions of hurting anyone," Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada tells E! News. "I understand where she is coming from, but Daniel Tosh did not attack this young lady. Hollywoodnews.com: Dave Chappelle gets his own chapter in comedian Jim Breuer’s autobiography “I’m Not High,” which I recently finished. The two infamously starred in the stoner comedy “Half Baked,” but they also almost headlined an ABC sitcom titled “Buddies,” which never made it much further than the pilot stages. But Breuer gives Chappelle lots of love.
I wonder if it’s returned in Chappelle’s new material.
That’s right. After being off the grid for years, leaving his Comedy Central sketch show in the lurch and “abandoning” his fanbase (albeit temporarily), Chappelle appears to be ready to return to the spotlight … and he started that comeback with a marathon six hours of combined standup at Los Angeles’ Laugh Factory over the weekend.
“You can’t keep a genius comic down,” says Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada, “What else to say?”

It's not unusual to hear that Jon Lovitz is the funniest part of a movie. It's more so to discover that that movie isn't a traditional comedy -- it's "Casino Jack," George Hickenlooper's caper-like take on the downfall of Jack Abramoff and the director's last before his death in October at age 47. Lovitz plays Adam Kidan, Abramoff's partner in a scheme to buy a casino cruise line in Florida. Unlike lobbyists Abramoff (played by Kevin Spacey) and his protege Michael Scanlon (Barry Pepper), Kidan is not in the business of self-delusion about his own nature. He's a former mattress salesman with mob ties who likes strippers, cocaine and frank talk, and in a story in which so many of the figures involved have convinced themselves that their greed somehow works toward the greater good, Lovitz's character is a breath of fresh air, an unabashed, amusing sleazebag. I got a...

The standup comedy playbook has changed. New media have created more ways to get your act to the masses, and the prevalence of reality TV means fewer scripted series, so success performing live is less likely to earn you a trip to the sitcom big leagues. But audiences still crave talented comedians and, in these crazy economic and political times, need a good laugh as much as ever, so opportunities are out there—if you're good."The cool thing about standup is it's entirely a talentocracy," says Steve Rosenfield, founding director of New York's American Comedy Institute, a school for aspiring comedians. "It really comes down to getting undeniably good, night after night, in front of different kinds of audiences, whether it's a late Saturday night or an early Tuesday show, because when a comedian achieves that, they're going to be seen."Open-mike nights are the inevitable starting point for standups,...

Los Angeles – Dave Chappelle could be holding Hollywood's comedy endurance record if he'd only been able to hold something else. The comic, who famously walked away from a $50 million deal four years ago to continue his Comedy Central TV show, was on stage at the Laugh Factory on Sunday, seemingly on his way to setting the club's endurance record for continuous standup comedy. But then, five hours into his routine, he walked away to go to the bathroom and was disqualified, said club owner Jamie Masada. The audience wasn't happy, Masada said, but he insisted that rules are rules where endurance comedy is concerned."There are only two rules," Masada said Tuesday. "You have to continuously tell jokes that are funny and you can't leave the stage, even to go to the bathroom."The result: the seven-hour, 34-minute marathon performance that Dane Cook turned in last year stands as the club's record.

Funnyman Dave Chappelle failed in his attempt to set a new record for comedy endurance - by walking offstage during his performance to go to the bathroom.
The comic took the stage at Hollywood's Laugh Factory on Sunday in a bid to break the club record for the longest time on stage, previously set by Dane Cook in a seven-hour, 34-minute marathon last year.
However, Chappelle's attempt to outdo Cook failed after five hours when he was disqualified by owner Jamie Masada for taking a bathroom break.
The original record was set by the late Richard Pryor who spent two hours and 41 minutes on stage in 1980. Chappelle previously recorded a time of six hours before Cook's triumph in 2008.

Michael Jackson's accuser in the singer's child molestation case took the witness stand yesterday, facing the star in court for the first time. The boy, 15, followed his 14-year-old brother, who testified he saw Jackson grope his sibling in early 2003. The teen accuser, who was a cancer patient when he met Jackson, talked about attending a Los Angeles comedy camp hosted by Jamie Masada, the comedy club owner who would eventually bring him and Jackson together. The boy said his favorite comedian was Tonight Show host Jay Leno and that he often asked Masada if Leno would attend the camp, but Leno never did. The defense contends Leno is one of several comedians the boy's family tried to bilk out of money. Jackson's accuser also testified about his father hitting him, his sister and mother, and talked about what it was like to have cancer. He said, "I felt like there was a knife in my stomach," adding that he would hold a pillow to his stomach as he slept to quell the pain.

The boy accusing Michael Jackson of child molestation is in good health and will be able to testify against the singer, despite fears he would die before the trial started. The 14 year-old was said to be in seriously bad health following his battle with cancer, and comedy club owner Jamie Masada - who introduced the boy to Jackson - told reporters he feared the youngster would lose his battle for life. But American newspaper the New York Daily News has conducted an investigation into the boy's well-being and reports the boy is now strong enough to live a normal lifestyle. The news comes just three months after the youngster's estranged father applied for emergency custody after becoming terrified his son was dying. In court papers, both Santa Barbara County senior Deputy District Attorney Ronald Zonen and county sheriff James Anderson agreed the boy was no longer in danger of dying. Zonen writes, "(He) is in excellent health, not withstanding his prior battle with cancer. I spent the day with him Monday the 19th of January. He was in good spirits and presented himself as an entirely healthy 14-year-old boy. He is pursuing his education and is involved in sports and extracurricular activities." The trial is slated for December.
