Exclusive: Ariel Meislin has left ICM Partners, where she has been a lit agent focusing on directors, to join Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment as a manager. She will become Kaplan/Perrone’s first New York City hire and is tasked with establishing the New York office as the lit management/production company expands its footprint outside of Los Angeles. She also will continue to focus on filmmakers.
Meislin began her career in ICM’s mailroom and rose through the ranks to become an agent in less than two years. Since her promotion to agent two a half years ago, she has built her roster by identifying and transitioning filmmakers from the feature space into television, specializing in international voices. Her clients at ICM included Debs Paterson, Ed Lilly, Alex Gabassi, Amit Gupta (His Dark Materials), Darya Zhuk (Little America), Marialy Rivas, Catriona McKenzie (Marvel’s upcoming Echo), and Stacey Gregg (The Baby), among others. Some of her clients are expected to join Meislin at Kaplan/Perrone.
“We’ve been continually impressed by Ariel’s keen eye at identifying fantastic voices, as well as her tireless focus on accelerating the careers of her clients,” the partners at Kaplan/Perrone said in a statement. “Having a full-time presence in New York will enhance our ability to effectively represent clients on a global level and we feel Ariel’s strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit are the ideal fit for Kpe.”
Meislin is the latest ICM agent to depart for another agency or management company ahead of company’s pending acquisition by CAA.

The South by Southwest Film Festival has rolled out its full programming line up, with high-profile new documentaries bolstering previously announced features.
For many in Hollywood, the last-minute cancellation of the Austin-based 2020 SXSW conference was a reality check about the severity of the coronavirus pandemic. Global lockdowns followed, and a year later, the film portion of the cultural event is soldiering on.
“We feel privileged to have been able to pivot to SXSW Online and present a fantastic treasure trove of programming, including a pared down and wonderful selection of films that we know will delight, entertain and move our attendees,” said Janet Pierson, SXSW’s director of film.
Among the selection is “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free,” featuring a 16mm footage archive of the late singer at work on his 1994 album “Wildflowers,” largely considered his best. The film is directed by Mary Wharton, and leans into SXSW’s reputation for top-tier music programming.

Documentary music films about the careers of singer-songwriter Charli Xcx and late rock legend Tom Petty will headline this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, as the Austin fest has unveiled its full 2021 slate.
Charli Xcx’s “Alone Together” will be the closing night film about how she made an album over the course of 40 days in quarantine, while “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free” will be the centerpiece film that uncovers new 16mm footage of Petty at work on his 1994 album “Wildflowers.” Rounding out the headliners for SXSW is the previously announced opening night film, “Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil,” a YouTube Originals documentary about the aftermath of the actress and singer’s near-fatal overdose in 2018.
This year’s SXSW, now in its 28th year, is virtual and online after 2020’s festival was one of the first major events to be canceled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The value of film production in the U.K. climbed 7% to £1.96 billion ($2.42 billion) last year, the second-highest level on record. The vast majority of that was generated by Hollywood movies, but although the British independent sector is overshadowed commercially, it is holding its own creatively.
Despite the pain and disruption caused by the coronavirus crisis, Adrian Wootton, CEO of the British Film Commission, is confident that the production boom that the U.K. was enjoying pre-lockdown will resume. Underpinning that is the 25% tax rebate for production, a strong and growing studio infrastructure, a thriving VFX sector, and a rich vein of talent behind and in front of the camera, Wootton says.
Apart from Covid-19, another cloud looming is Brexit, the full effect of which will only be felt at the end of the year. The VFX sector is particularly vulnerable, as a third of its workforce is from European Union countries.

The Eddy’s Jack Thorne, The Innocents’ Stacey Gregg and Utopia’s Dennis Kelly are among the A-list writers to back a new writers’ scheme organized by Broadchurch producer Kudos.
The Endemol Shine indie has teamed with The Royal Court Theatre to support a new fellowship that will offer three writers £10,000 to help getting their work developed and produced in television and theatre.
These fellowships are specifically aimed at writers already establishing a writing career, but who perceive barriers in getting their work developed and produced because of class, disability, education, ethnicity, gender identity, geography or any other barrier.
The bursaries will support writers for a period of six months from January 2019 and during this time they will also be given the opportunity to see productions, meet other leading writers in theatre and television and have ongoing artistic conversations with staff at both organisations.
