Resident Evil films, as we know them, could’ve been different only if the late George A. Romero had entered the arena. He was an American-Canadian director known for the Night of the Living Dead series, which was also a major contributor to shaping the presentation of zombies as we see them today. Little did many know that he was this close to directing the first Re movie.
The first film in the action-horror series arrived in 2002, starring Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Joseph May, and more. Though the movie was a commercial success, generating $103 million in revenue against a $33 million budget, it wasn’t received well by the fans and critics. What’s more, it landed on the most hated list of renowned Chicago Sun-Times journalist Roger Ebert.

Colonel Edward Shames, the last surviving officer from the World War II paratroopers that inspired an HBO series, died Friday at age 99. He passed at home, according to a message posted by his funeral home.
Band of Brothers was a miniseries that first aired in 2001. It was based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1992 non-fiction book of the same name. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaborated to create the miniseries, which went on to win Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
Named “Easy” Company, the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infrantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division saw major action in Europe during World War II. The series characters were based on the real-life people chronicled in Ambrose’s book. Excerpts from the interviews in the book were part of the HBO episodes, but the real-life people were not identified until the series end.

Release Date: August 30, 2019
Platform: PC (reviewed), Xbo
Developer: Bloober Team
Publisher: Bloober Team
Genre: Psychological Horror
It made all the sense in the world to me when I heard that Polish studio Bloober Team was developing a psychological horror game inspired by the Blair Witch franchise. The studio’s brilliant Layers of Fear games are some of the most artful horror games ever made, and The Blair Witch Project is one of the most unique, influential horror movies of all time, so I was pretty sure Bloober’s vision for the franchise would hit the spot.
Unfortunately, Blair Witch is a bit of a miss. In a lot of ways, the game exhibits some of Bloober’s greatest strengths both in visual storytelling and game design, but uneven pacing,...

Initially a bustling urban backdrop for this new and correspondingly modern medium known as cinema, New York City has been a focal point of American movies since the inception of the form itself. Movies were made to move, and no place moved like NYC. At first, it was the city alone that dazzled filmgoers: the sheer scope and scale of Manhattan’s topography, the size of the city’s towering skyscrapers, the clustered ebb and flow of its lively population. Then stories emerged out of this concrete jungle, stories born from the teeming metropolitan setting: immigrant tragedies, gangster tales, social dramas of class inequality and economic expansion. Before long, Hollywood coopted New York, and suddenly, the bi-coastal portrayal of the Big Apple featured posh penthouses, swanky nightclubs, and a decidedly one-sided representation of the haves and have-nots (Hollywood liked the haves). As an alternative, independent filmmakers took the city’s...

2017 may have just begun, but it already has its first superlative motion picture release. And no, sadly, it’s not the thirty-seventh (give or take) entry in the Underworld franchise. Instead, it comes from the art film world, and specifically one of world cinema’s most interesting directors working today.
After a little over a decade of finding niche pockets of support in niche pockets of film intellectual circles, 2014 gave director Eugene Green one of his most successful outings. The superlative La Sapienza in many ways introduced the auteur to a much broader selection of cineastes, and with actor Fabrizio Rongione once again by his side Green has made yet another skeletal, beautifully crafted drama.
Entitled The Son Of Joseph, Green’s film riffs on the nativity story, telling the story of a Parisian teen by the name of Vincent (Victor Ezenfis). Living with his single mother Marie, a nurse played by Natacha Regnier,...

40. Don’t Look Now (1973)
Directed by: Nicholas Roeg
A few films that could be defined as horror appear on this list, mostly because the best ones veer further into a psychological discussion on dealing with fear, death, and loss. Based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, “Don’t Look Now” is a landmark of British-Italian cinema, thanks to its wonderfully developed characters and realistic depiction of grief. John and Laura Baxter (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) travel to Venice, still reeling after the accidental drowning of their daughter Christine. While there, Laura meets a psychic who claims that Christine is still trying to contact them, which she shares with John, who is skeptical. Slowly, John begins to experience supernatural moments and mysterious sightings, some of which appear to be a young girl in a red coat, similar to the one Christine was wearing when she died. While the...

Translators introduction: This article by Mireille Latil Le Dantec, the first of two parts, was originally published in issue 40 of Cinématographe, September 1978. The previous issue of the magazine had included a dossier on "La qualité française" and a book of a never-shot script by Jean Grémillon (Le Printemps de la Liberté or The Spring of Freedom) had recently been published. The time was ripe for a re-evaluation of Grémillon's films and a resuscitation of his undervalued career. As this re-evaluation appears to still be happening nearly 40 years later—Grémillon's films have only recently seen DVD releases and a 35mm retrospective begins this week at Museum of the Moving Image in Queens—this article and its follow-up gives us an important view of a French perspective on Grémillon's work by a very perceptive critic doing the initial heavy-lifting in bringing the proper attention to the filmmaker's work.

Plus, Professor Shady Eyebrows’ dark plan is finally revealed!
The Mystic Falls gang was island-bound on the Feb. 7 episode of The Vampire Diaries, in the hopes of finding the cure for vampirism — but what they really needed to find was a cure for all the D-r-a-m-a! Not only did Elena (Nina Dobrev) spend the entire hour locking fangs with Rebekah (Claire Holt), but everyone’s favorite doppelganger also gave Damon (Ian Somerhalder) a bit of an ultimatum — and I can’t imagine she was too thrilled with his response. Oh, and Shane (David Alpay) is even shadier than we thought.

Family Guy has done Christmas episodes before – maybe nothing quite to the degree of American Dad’s insane holiday outing, but they’ve certainly been standouts.
Here, the show combined its Christmas tradition with another one: the telling of stories with the characters portraying other people. This time, we were treated to a satirical take on the birth of Jesus on "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!"
Really, it felt a little predictable. Plenty of crude references were made to the fact that Joseph may have been dating the attractive Mary. Though she was still a virgin, it was implied they did other things. Joking references to the culture of Biblical times were made. There were “Cher is old” references, for some reason. Various members of the cast appeared in a wide variety of Biblical roles. There were laughs, but it was pretty light satire.
The biggest chuckles came from a pair...

What's the best way to distract men from not getting paid? Free alcohol and a boxing match, of course.
Thomas Durant was up to his old manipulative tricks again on "Bread and Circuses," drawing away from money problems and focusing on the more enticing fight between Cullen Bohannon and Elam Ferguson. It's a surprise that not many people can see through his methods, but it makes sense that live entertainment manages to divert attention when each day consists of extremely muddy and tiresome work.
Perhaps that's why Lily Bell can go toe-to-toe with Durant. She gets to wear pretty dresses, goes on picnics and spend time forming her own ways to play her smart cards. And boy, did she play them.
It may have been a brash move to tell Durant that she had the maps the whole time, but it was worth it just to see his frustrated face.

It seems Joe Washbourn, Toploader singer and Popstar to Operastar contestant, has set his sights on becoming a wedding singer.
The Sun reports that Joe, who’s currently favourite to leave the show tomorrow night, won’t however be adding opera singer to his CV.
He told TV Biz, “When it comes to a Toploader gig, you’re going to get Toploader songs.
“But opera is something I’ve had so much fun doing I might be busting it out at weddings and mates’ parties.”
However, Joseph may sneak some opera onto new tracks. The songwriter, 35, said:
“Never say never. I might sling a bit in the next album!”
Joe went on to discuss who he thinks will win Popstar, citing Joe McElderry as his favourite…
He said, “I think he’s an expert at this type of show. He doesn’t seem that nervous.”

Funnyman Jim Carrey stepped out Thursday night in New York City with Anchal Joseph , a former "America's Next Top Model" contestant, and TooFab's got exclusive details on how the pair met! Sources tell TooFab that Joseph, 24, who appeared on the seventh season of "Top Model," met Carrey on the set of his comedy "Mr. Popper's Penguins." Joseph is an extra in the film, appearing in a scene in the movie with other models, sources tell TooFab. Joseph may be busy juggling a relationship and her career: Two other projects in the works include a role on Halogen TV's "Nobel Exchange," as well as a role in director Garry Marshall 's film "New Year's Eve," a sequel to "Valentine's Day." The pair were spotted Thursday leaving the play "Time Stands Still." The movie, currently filming in New York City and slated for a June release, is about a businessman who inherits six penguins,...

Episodes offers another Anglo-American comedy partnership, and we all know how well The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret turned out. I suppose we should be flattered Americans want to cross-pollinate with UK talent, if only to scratch their Anglophilia, but the results rarely justify the effort. This seven-part Showtime/BBC comedy essentially retells the joke behind Extras, when Ricky Gervais’s character found himself writing and starring in a low-rent, catchphrase-orientated sitcom he’d intended to be more highbrow and insightful, called “When The Whistle Blows”.
The big twist in Episodes is that husband-and-wife writers Sean and Beverly Lincoln (Stephan Mangan and Tamsin Greig), fresh from winning a BAFTA for their sitcom Lyman’s Boys, starring revered actor Julian Bullard (Richard Griffiths), get the opportunity to remake their show for America, after Us exec Merc Lapidus (John Pankow) invites them over to Los Angeles. It’s not long before...

Chicago – In the annals of showbiz-skewering shows about shows, few of them have been as funny right off the bat as “Episodes.” This Showtime/BBC co-production is blessed with one of the best premises of the season, and as evidenced in its first three episodes, the premise only gets funnier as the story progresses, reaching new heights of lunacy.
The simplistic title is reminiscent of Ricky Gervais’ great sitcom, “Extras,” which was also a pointed satire of the business where stars played unflattering versions of themselves, which is exactly what “Friends” star Matt LeBlanc does in “Episodes.” Though LeBlanc may be the show’s primary selling point, he’s merely an ingredient in the show’s pungently witty brew. What really sells the show is its timely portrait of a hit British show’s Americanization (a.k.a destruction) in cheerily soulless L.A.
