IndieWire asked Jeff Kaufman, the writer-producer-director of “Every Act of Life,” a documentary about Tony-winning playwright Terrence McNally, to remember the writer of the books for musicals “Kiss of the Spider Woman — the Musical,” and “Ragtime,” as well as “Master Class” and two plays that he adapted into “Love! Valour! Compassion!” and “Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune,” which were directed by Joe Mantello and Garry Marshall, respectively. On Wednesday, McNally, who had been fighting lung cancer, succumbed at age 81 from complications of the Coronavirus.
When I first spoke to Terrence McNally about making a documentary on his life, he said something like, “Everything you need to know about me is in my work. What is there to say?” As everyone who has seen or read Terrence’s plays, books for musicals, opera librettos, and screenplays knows, there is so much to discover (and appreciate) in the characters and worlds he created.

The actress, 65, showed up at Radio City Musical Hall for Broadway’s biggest night wearing a black and white stripe gown reminiscent of one her character Delia Deetz wore in the 1988 comedy classic, Beetlejuice.
Of course, the choice was intentional, as O’Hara is at the Tony Awards to introduce a production number from the musical adaptation of Beetlejuice, which is up for eight trophies including Best Musical at Sunday’s show.

Stephanie J. Block is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Musical at this Sunday’s Tonys for her dynamic embodiment of Cher in “The Cher Show.” However, Tony history is not on her side. You have to go back to 2000 to find a leading lady who won without her show at least being in contention for Best Musical or Best Musical Revival.
Heather Headley won for “Aida,” edging out Toni Collette (“The Wild Party”), Rebecca Luker (“The Music Man”), the late Marin Mazzie and future Tony record-setter Audra McDonald (“Marie Christine”). Collette, Luker, and Mazzie all headlined productions that competed for one of the top categories.
It was something of a shock when “Aida” was left out of the Best Musical category. Perhaps that snub built sentiment for “Aida” and its powerhouse star. Voters certainly disagreed with the nominating committee as the tuner took home an additional three Tony Awards.

One of Cole Porter’s most popular shows, “Kiss Me, Kate,” hasn’t been seen on the boards of the Great White Way in nearly two decades. This season mark the return of the classic musical comedy via the Roundabout Theatre Company revival that opened on March 14 at Studio 54. If songwriters had to choose the definitive performances of their masterpieces to be placed in a musical time capsule I'm sure last night's cabaret concert by Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley would be selected. A celebrity filled audience at Feinstein's54 Below was at times spell bound by the musicianship and sound of their magnificent voices. Jason and Marin shared songs they introduced on Broadway from shows including Ragtime, Passion, The Full Monty, Curtains, and The Visit. There were also gems from roles they originated in Broadway revivals like Kiss Me, Kate, and American Songbook Standards from their many TV, cabaret, and concert hall appearances. Their often used designation of Broadway's Golden Couple are a Gold Standard, and who ever opens that time capsule in the future is gonna flip.

In Stage Door we talk theater, usually making some form of movie connection because that's how we do things...
I don't know anything about Bluegrass music but I wouldn't have connected it to the Melodrama form. If I tried to tell you the plot of Steve Martin's Broadway show "Bright Star," you wouldn't even believe it, so I shan't. Let's just say that if the plot were a movie it would be a silent film with wild eyed pantomiming it's so Big with oversized emotional rug-pulling. I was just crazy about the music but the book not so much. (On the night I attended it was all worth it because Steve Martin made a surprise appearance. There he was as the curtain raised for Act 2, playing on his banjo. He was loving it and so was the very very appreciative crowd. How lucky that he picked our night to show up!
