It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.
“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.
Much of the evening went according to Steve Pond‘s predictions in his final analysis of the race. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won Best Animated Feature, the first award of the night, and “Navalny” won Best Documentary. During his acceptance speech, “Navalny” director Daniel Roher...

A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.
The votes are in. The ballots are being counted. The clock is ticking toward Oscar Sunday (which also is the day the clock ticks ahead as daylight-saving time begins). This also means the party circuit is in full bloom, and if you wondered if anyone was still worried about Covid, as has been the case for the past two Oscar seasons due to the pandemic, well, think again. As evidence, the two celebrations I hit on Thursday night — one for the Australian Oscar nominees, the other for Irish nominees – were packed to the max, barely a mask in sight. And if anyone was worried, it seems they have decided to party hearty instead, at least until the hangover following this six-month awards season finally takes hold Monday morning.

Baz Luhrmann says it would be “an amazing historical moment” if Elvis cinematographer Mandy Walker were to triumph at Sunday’s Academy Awards. After a storied career spanning decades and industries, producer Gail Berman is in no need of further accolades for her résumé. She has produced theater (including the original Tony-nominated staging of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1982), television (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Netflix’s recent hit Wednesday) and animated films (The Addams Family). She’s served as president of Paramount Pictures and the Producers Guild of America. But, surprisingly, Elvis is her first foray into live-action feature film, and it also happens to be responsible for her first-ever Oscar nomination.

Although legendary musician Elvis Presley has been portrayed on screen numerous times in the 45 years since his death, his full life story had never been given the theatrical film treatment until the recent release of Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” This artistically bold yet intimately honest depiction of the rock and roll icon’s ever-evolving relationship with his fame is now nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Following the losses of films such as “Ray” (about Ray Charles) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Freddie Mercury), it would make history as the first singer biopic to conquer the top Oscar category.

From the most commercial movies to the artiest of arthouse fare, all of the year’s best picture Oscar nominees have one thing in common: themes of power struggles and an anti-authoritarian streak. This reporter spoke with the filmmakers behind “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans,” “Tár,” “Triangle of Sadness” and “Women Talking” about how they explored these topics and why they’re so relevant today.

When one thinks of women and Elvis Presley, it’s either his widow Priscilla, his late daughter Lisa Marie, or the legion of ladies left weak in the knee when the badass kid from Tupelo, Mississippi began shaking that moneymaker. Austin Butler’s agent told him he would need to gain weight to play the older version of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” “I heard that Ryan Gosling when he was going to do ‘The Lovely Bones,’ had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it,” Butler tells Variety. “So I started doing that. I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds. It’s fun for a week, and then you feel awful about yourself. But we were planning on shooting chronologically in the beginning. That quickly went out the window with Covid. It was just impossible.”
On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Butler sits down to discuss receiving his first Oscar nomination for best actor. He also discusses renting an apartment after the Warner Bros. corporate cards were shut off following the Covid shutdown.

Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve‘s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune, has wrapped filming, but isn’t set to reach theatres for another nine months – to be exact, it has a release date of November 3, 2023. Speaking with Collider, cast member Dave Bautista promised that this one will be worth the wait, and it is much more amped up and intense than its predecessor.
Bautista said, “This is so amped up from the first film. The first film was just an introduction to what this film is. There’s just so much going on, it’s so much more cutthroat and political and intense. And there are moments of levity where [there are] some funny moments, and they’re kind of absurd humor, but there are those moments. So it’s just so much more amped up than the first film.“

When Alejandro Jodorowsky was developing his unmade adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune, he planned to cast Mick Jagger as the character Feyd-Rautha. When David Lynch brought his version of Dune to the screen in 1984, Feyd-Rautha was played by Sting. And in Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve‘s two-part adaptation of Dune (which is set to reach theatres on November 3, 2023), the character is played by Elvis star Austin Butler, who just received an Oscar nomination for his performance as Elvis Presley. When Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams dropped the nominations for the 95th Oscars on Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had for the first time in awhile the most wide open and competitive race in years.
There is something for everyone here. There are two billion-dollar-grossing films in the Best Picture mix in Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water. Both are sequels. This might well help the Oscarcast that have been in steady decline over the past pandemic-plagued years.
Also helping is the chance to see Rihanna and Lady Gaga perform their nominated tunes for Wakanda Forever and Top Gun: Maverick, respectively. They will compete against perennial nominee Diane Warren, who is up for the award yet again for the film Tell It Like A Woman. There is also the rousing theme from Rrr, and the prospect of Talking Heads leader David Byrne for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

All signs point to “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis” and “The Fabelmans” all dominating the Oscar noms with eight apiece. But if “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Top Gun: Maverick” manage some pickups, they could join or surpass the group.

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

Do audiences ever ask for a History Lesson? Robert Altman gives them a smart, if diffuse, image of America as a showbiz invention, commercialized and packaged.
