You might’ve used the expression “The Real McCoy” and not actually known where it came from. Colloquially it refers to something being authentic, or the real deal. In fact, if someone were to name their movie after it, you might presume it was just a romantic comedy.
Well, now super-mega-star Chris Pratt is set to star in a movie about where that expression originated. The Real McCoy is a bootlegging drama about the life of Bill McCoy, a famous rum-runner during Prohibition who, as an American sea captain, shipped and sold illegal liquor across the coast until his capture in 1923. According to urban legend, McCoy touted that his liquor was never “cut”, or watered down, thus the expression “The Real McCoy”. But McCoy is also credited with having essentially created the six pack in order to better carry and ship bottles of rum and whiskey.

Universal Pictures has won a bidding war against Warner Bros. for the action-adventure, The Real McCoy, with actor Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) attached to star. The action-adventure tells the true story of Bill McCoy, a bootlegger who ran rum during the Prohibition era in the 1920's. McCoy smuggled alcohol in secret from the Bahamas without involvement from the mafia that have inspired his name "The Real McCoy."
Pratt has been making waves after the success of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and will next be seen in Universal Pictures' Jurassic World. His upcoming projects include Columbia Pictures remake of The Magnificent Seven with director Antoine Fuqua with actor Denzel Washington (The Equalizer) in the leading role and the comic book adaptation of Cowboy Ninja Viking with John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch rumored to direct the film. Given that he’s probably the main draw (the human one, at least) for its massive summer hope Jurassic World, it’s perhaps not that surprising that Universal would want to stay in the Chris Pratt business. The studio has acted quickly to snap up a pitch that could potentially star the actor, The Real McCoy. Bill Dubuque, who wrote The Judge, worked on the idea based on a suggestion from producer Tom McNulty, with the pair teaming up to sell Pratt on the concept. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s a story about real-life bootlegger Bill McCoy, who became the inspiration for the phrase “the real McCoy” referring to his unsullied liquor. McCoy himself was ironically a non-drinker who prided himself on never having to pay protection money to anyone, criminal or otherwise, as he smuggled alcohol during Prohibition in the United States. A character based on the...

Whenever hearing the phrase "the real McCoy," it always makes me think of an 80s TV show in the same vein as "MacGyver." In reality, it's just a turn of phrase inspired by real life bootlegger Bill McCoy, and it was used to specify when the liquor hadn't been dulled down. Now THR reports The Real McCoy will become a feature film after Universal Pictures won a bidding war against Warner Bros. Pictures to land the pitch that has Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World star Chris Pratt attached to star. The pitch comes from The Judge scribe Bill Dubuque, and it was intriguing enough to land a solid seven figure deal. As of now, there aren't many details on the project, other than that it focuses on the life of Bill McCoy and his bootlegging days. The idea came from producer Tom McNulty, caught the interest of Michael De Luca,...

Nucky Thompson has often been an unusually undermotivated screen gangster — which is fine, in principle. But that quirk of antihero soul is developed and deepened in this episode by our seeing Nucky recognize this about himself. Back in Florida for most of this hour, after an abortive Penn Station layover attempt to reach out to Margaret — nicely played by Kelly MacDonald after a long absence (just the right amount of care for Nucky, and the certainty that she was right to leave him) — Nucky gives Sally the following mini-speech after a night of drinking and getting the straight dope (sort of) on the Florida real-estate shenanigans from Bill McCoy. Here’s Nucky on the subject of Nucky:“I’m trying to build something. I don’t know why. I wonder if I did nothing at all, I’d be happier. But I can’t stop; I tried. But I just...

Thematically, we’re following a “North Star” considering guiding lights reunite several estranged members of the “Boardwalk Empire” cast, even if it's a bit of a mid-season episode lull. Perhaps the writers had to give audiences a reprieve after the sad suicide of Eddie Kessler last episode. “North Star” takes Nucky (Steve Buscemi) back to Florida to finish his land deals with Bill McCoy (Pearce Bunting) from earlier in the season and meeting him in the Sunshine State are his new partners Meyer Lansky (Anatol Yusef) and Charles “Lucky” Luciano (Vincent Piazza). And so new alliances are formed, Nucky, McCoy and the new Italian man in Tampa, Vincenzo Petrucelli (Vincenzo Amato). But old alliances also crumble. Luciano gets spooked by Petrucelli as he has ties to his boss Joe Masseria (Ivo Nandi). If Joe were to find out that Luciano was making side deals on his own there would be hell to pay.
