Though the digital dinosaurs were a significant part of the appeal of the original Jurassic Park as that level of realism had never before been reached in cinema, many of the shots to feature dinosaurs were actually full-scale practical robotic creations, conceived and produced at Stan Winston Studio.
Two key artists at Stan Winston’s side from the early 1980s until his death in 2008 are Shane Mahan and John Rosengrant. Now, the pair of craftspeople is together in a new company called Legacy Effects, but 20 years ago, they were ready to release their most ambitious film to that point – Jurassic Park.
The team at Stan Winston Studio spent a year building all of the practical dinosaurs which would shoot live on the set of the film, directed by Steven Spielberg and photographed by Dean Cundey. After production wrapped, Industrial Light and Magic matched their computer-generated dinosaurs to Sws’ designs and...

After a close call where a soaring budget nearly killed it, Johnny Depp’s $215 million update on The Lone Ranger begins shooting today in the desert of New Mexico.
If only the title character had some kind of catchphrase to mark this auspicious event!
EW spoke with Johnny Depp previously about what he had planned for the film — which features him as Tonto, taking the reins as the lead character while Armie Hammer’s Lone Ranger becomes the sidekick.
“I remember watching it as a kid, with Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore, and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone...

The Film:
If you haven’t noticed yet, the Western is back. Over the last handful of years, there’s been numerous stabs at the genre in classical yarns of the Old West, you know, the stuff of Americana. But enter Rango, a loving ode to the Spaghetti Western. It’s influences are obvious. Director Gore Verbinski channels Sergio Leone; composer Hans Zimmer channels Ennio Morricone; and the film’s titled character uses Django as its outline. But like The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly or Once Upon a Time in the West, the film sometimes feels like an endurance test, especially in the middle act, and only half as good.
There’s plenty of stuff here that almost made Rango special. The wonderful voice acting from Johnny Depp, who merges his Captain Jack Sparrow and Hunter S. Thompson together, in his most crazed neurotic yet. The animation is...

In Rango, Johnny Depp voices a pet lizard who fancies himself an actor, only to find himself lost in the desert and drawing fire from the hardscrabble local critters with his tough-guy act. The comedy draws on Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns and Sam Peckinpah shoot-’em’ups for inspiration, but the film shout-outs don’t stop there.
Director Gore Verbinski, who worked with Depp on the previous three Pirates of the Caribbean movies says Rango is kind of a “film within a film,” packed full of movie references because Rango is such a storytelling buff and sees everything through that lens.

Rango marks the first full-length animated movie to be produced at Ilm. Hal Hickel tells us how Ilm adapted, and what challenges the team faced...
You might have picked up the impression from our review that we were fans of the incoming animated movie, Rango. Appreciating that not everyone seems to concur with our feelings towards the film, we very much stand by them nonetheless. It's an excellent piece of cinema, and richly deserves to be seen.
Rango also marks the first animated movie to be produced by Ilm. And to find out just what that entailed, we've been lucky enough to speak to a couple of the wizards who made that happen.
Firstly, then, we've been speaking to animation director Hal T Hickel, whose back catalogue includes three Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, Iron Man, Star Wars and A.I.
Here's how we got on...

It's been taking rather a long time for the Creature from the Black Lagoon to re-emerge on to the big screen for the planned remake. And now it's evolving yet again...
The project has been in development at Universal for more than a quarter of a century and the studio has just hired a new director, Carl Rinsch.
Rinsch, whose previous work is mainly in commercials, was recently linked to the new Alien prequel (now being helmed by Ridley Scott) and will be in the hotseat for the samurai film 47 Ronin (starring Keanu Reeves).
Meanwhile, Breck Eisner - who had dropped out of the Creature remake earlier this year - is now directing a new version of The Brood, David Cronenberg's 1979 horror film about mutant children instructed to carry out violence through a psychic link with their mother.
The original Creature from the Black Lagoon, about an amphibious missing...
