I tried making a conscious effort to find posters in areas I might not have normally visited this year. That’s the effect of having been able to follow so many design firms and artists on Twitter before a majority (justifiably) bailed upon its sale. With such broad and instant access, the ease at which I discovered new releases made it so I often forget to look elsewhere.
Imp Awards is still a great resource, if only to sift through everything they’ve tagged as a given year to see if something got missed. Then there’s Brandon Schaefer‘s year-end collections and Adrian Curry’s extensive Mubi posts and Instagram to get an inside look from two poster artists and connoisseurs. And there’s a slew of other accounts who keep on the pulse of the art form when so many (e.g. studios who commission the work) can...

There’s more than writer-director Spike Jonze tying together films like Adaptation, Her and Where the Wild Things Are: They all share titles designed by Geoff McFetridge, a prolific visual artist who often works behind the scenes on a wide variety of media and advertising projects. From Nike and Vans footwear to Pepsi billboards and Apple watch faces, McFetridge’s work adorns an array of familiar products, but like many designers he’s not well-known beyond professional circles.

The frontman for the indie band talks about this month's uber-creative projects--a new video with toast animation, a street parade in L.A., and a stunt with the "Today Show" hosts--and how he focuses more on the business side than he'd like.
The other day, before a show in Athens, Ga., Damian Kulash, frontman for the indie band Ok Go, was in full rock star mode. But he wasn't trashing his hotel room or partying with groupies on the road (See "Life," by Keith Richards, pages 1-576). Kulash, the model of a modern-day rocker and self-professed "insane workaholic," had encamped in his hotel room for several conference calls so he could oversee the band's uber-creative projects this month: a new music video involving animation on toast, a New Orleans-style street parade in Los Angeles, and a Today Show video in which Ok Go envelops Matt Lauer and co. in Ping-Pong balls.

Technically this is the kind of headline you might have expected to see in the midst of our best of the year/decade lists. But let's not get too hung up on the timing, because it's going to make perfect sense in a minute. This year at SXSW, the festival has launched the first Excellence in Title Design award, honoring the best opening title sequences in film and television over the past year (judges include Susan Bradley from Pixar and Ian Albinson and Alexander Ulloa from Art of the Title Sequence.) For those in the know, there's a grand tradition in the art of a credit sequence, but sometimes in the rush of blockbusters and big names we forget about all the work and talent that goes into even the most functional of movie arts: the opening credits.
Of course, one of the most talked about title sequences in recent...

We're all excited about Spike Jonze's upcoming adaptation of the classic children's book Where the Wild Things Are, especially after the book's author Maurice Sendak gave Jonze his full endorsement and glowing approval in a very titillating behind-the-scenes featurette.
And now, here's something to get everyone even more excited: We Love You So recently posted a sneak peak at the cover that will grace the latest issue of Filter Magazine.
The cover, which was illustrated by Geoff McFetridge, looks appropriately trippy. According to the post, the Filter issue will feature interviews with Jonze and actors Catherine Keener, Catherine O'Hara, and Max Records, as well as some photos and art from the set and crew.

- Anarchists of the traditional art form, I'm looking forward to catching this docu: an in-depth look into (just under a baker's dozen or so of) artists that remain, for the most part, incognito from the mass recognition/acclaim. Not surprisingly, I'm only familiar with a trio of names (those associated for their contributions to the film world), but I'm sure this grouping of social misfits, who made the stomping grounds of the urban jungle their own canvases will incite plenty of interest. Jeez, I regret not spending more time developing a certain side of my brain. Beautiful Losers follows a loose-knit group of likeminded and creative outsiders in the 1990s who found common ground at a little NYC storefront art gallery. Rooted in the Diy (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, these individuals created art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Featuring Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen,
