Sterling Lord, who represented Jimmy Breslin, Art Buchwald, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gordon Parks and most famously, Jack Kerouac, died Saturday in Ocala, Fla. He was 102 and his death was confirmed by his daughter, Rebecca Lord. No cause was given.
The list of literary greats represented by Lord over his long career included Frank Deford, David Wise, Nicolas Pileggi, Delores Kearns Goodwin, Joe McGinniss, Pete Gent, Pete Axthelm, and more. But it was Kerouac’s book that is likely his lasting legacy, sold for 1,000 after four years of trying. It went on to sell more than five million copies.
Lord was born in Burlington, Iowa, on Sept. 3, 1920. His father was an amateur bookbinder and nourished his son’s passion for books. Oddly, Lord himself publilshed only two works, a how-to on tennis and a memoir, neither of them massive sellers.

The case of Jeffrey MacDonald has inspired a greater volume of writing than anyone might have predicted decades ago — or, perhaps, than the facts of the case would seem to warrant. MacDonald, a U.S. military officer and physician accused and convicted of murdering his wife (pregnant at the time) and two children in 1970, was first the subject of Joe McGinniss’s book “Fatal Vision.” That book, which turned on McGinniss’s extreme access to MacDonald’s legal team and built to the author’s conclusion that the man was indeed guilty, inspired not merely lawsuits (settled out of court) but also Janet Malcolm’s 1990 book “The Journalist and the Murderer,” which uses McGinniss as evidence of the idea that the betrayal of sources in service of a narrative is central to the practice of journalism.

The decades-long saga of convicted killer Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald and the murders of his family he has always denied committing will return to the spotlight with a new TV movie about the case: Final Vision, starring Scandal star Scott Foley.

From Jack the Ripper to John Wayne Gacy to Aileen Wuornos, the horrific legacies of serial killers have managed to both appall and intrigue, as people attempt to explore and understand the darkest depths of the human psyche. Hollywood has mined this territory for years, with dozens of scripted true-crime movies and TV series exploring the “why” of those who snap.
But why are we so obsessed? Alex Wolff, who stars in the new movie My Friend Dahmer, about the high school years of the notorious mass murderer Jeffrey Dahmer, has a theory. “People are interested in seeing how things happen and maybe finding out what things could be different,” he tells Et. “Like, what is it about him that’s so different from me, or my next-door neighbor who seems a little bit off? Scott Foley‘s got a killer (or is it?) new role.
The Scandal star has signed on to Investigation Discovery’s Fatal Vision, in which he’ll play an Army captain convicted of murdering his family, our sister site Deadline reports.
The TV movie, based on Joe McGinniss’ nonfiction bestseller of the same name, chronicles the 1970 murders of pregnant Colette MacDonald and her daughters, Kimberly and Kristen. Foley’s character, Jeffery MacDonald, also was wounded in what he later told investigators was a ritualistic, Manson Family-style home invasion.

Documentary about former congressman Anthony Weiner and his wife Huma Abedin channels the spirit of the best and most surreal political journalism
Joe McGinniss’s book The Selling of a President is widely regarded as a peerless look inside the inner workings of a presidential campaign. It paints a warts-and-all picture of the neurotic, unhinged politician – one Richard Nixon – that the world came to know in greater depth after the scandal that ended his career. It was also a cautionary tale for any politician who ever thought about giving a journalist almost unlimited access to their campaign.
That warning went unheard by the group running Anthony Weiner’s disastrous mayoral bid in 2014, and documentary fans should rejoice for it. The resulting film is a riveting excursion into fear and loathing on the campaign trail. The film caused a stir before its premiere because of the access the team got to...

Rupert Goold’s retelling of the real-life tale of journalist Michael Finkel and the murderer he befriended has neither depth nor drama
Solid turns from Jonah Hill and James Franco, along with some disappointingly sidelined support from Felicity Jones, can’t save this muddled, real-life journo escapade from going the forgettable way of Kill the Messenger or Shattered Glass. Dropped from the New York Times for playing fast and loose with his facts, reporter Michael Finkel (Hill) becomes the confidante of Christian Longo (Franco) who is awaiting trial for the murder of his wife and children. As a fugitive, Longo had used Finkel’s name as an alias, but who is manipulating whom in their pre-trial chats? Unlike the infamous Joe McGinniss/Jeffrey MacDonald face-off savagely documented in Janet Malcolm’s book The Journalist and the Murderer (the 1990 urtext to which all such stories aspire), the symbiotic relationship between Finkel and Longo is neither complex,...

In 1970, Colette MacDonald and her two daughters were stabbed to death in a savage frenzy, setting in motion America's longest-running murder trial. Sarah Palin’s announcement that she won’t seek the Republican nomination for president in 2012 was not unexpected, but that doesn’t alleviate the disappointment for her passionate supporters — or those merely fascinated by our national obsession with the former Alaska governor. Consider me in the latter group. It’s sad, I guess, but the political impact of Palin’s announcement is secondary for me to the loss in entertainment value. It’s as if Alec Baldwin said he was not coming back to 30 Rock this season. Or Snooki checked out of Jersey Shore. (The writers at The Daily Show...

Sarah Palin cutout, filmmaker Nick Broomfield, Sarah Palin – You Betcha! Anna Faris-Chris Evans-Zachary Quinto/What's Your Number?: One of Worst Box-Office Openings Ever Sarah Palin – You Betcha! is the second Sarah Palin movie to bomb this year. Directed by sometime collaborators Nick Broomfield and Joan Churchill, Palin's You Betcha! movie collected an estimated $7,400 at 6 locations in North America this weekend, averaging a disastrous $1,233 per theater. Back in July, Stephen K. Bannon's strong 2012 Razzie contender The Undefeated earned $65,132 at 10 theaters, averaging $6,513 per site. Even though that wasn't too bad for starters — thanks to some strong Tea Party marketing — Palin's The Undefeated movie went on to cume at a dismal $116,381 domestically. Needless to say, outside the United States no one gives a damn about the widely derided hagiography. In sum, Sarah Palin is what back in the days of the studio system, exhibitors would have called Box-Office Poison.

The feuding between Levi Johnston and former Alaska governor and possible 2012 presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family continues, this time in book form. Johnston's new tell-all, "Deer in the Headlines: My life in Sarah Palin's Crosshairs," is due out Tuesday (Sept. 20). The AP reports that Johnston writes that when Sarah Palin found out she was pregnant in March of 2008, Bristol was mad and thought she should be the one who was pregnant, so she told Levi they should become so.

News broke Wednesday (Sept. 14) that a new book about Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and possible 2012 presidential candidate, is coming out soon, and it paints a less-than-flattering picture of her life before she was governor, including allegations of cocaine use and extramarital affairs.
Sarah's husband Todd Palin has fired back at author Joe McGinniss in a statement:
"This is a man who has been relentlessly stalking my family to the point of moving in right next door to us to harass us and spy on us to satisfy his creepy obsession with my wife. His book is full of disgusting lies, innuendo, and smears. Even The New York Times called this book 'dated, petty,' and that it 'chases caustic, unsubstantiated gossip.'"
Smart move, having her husband respond. Not only does it give weight that the affairs allegations are untrue, but it also makes the book less important to not have Palin herself respond.

Do you believe these wild new claims? The shocking biography will be published Sept. 20!
A new tell-all book makes some pretty wild accusations about Sarah Palin‘s past — and no, it wasn’t written by Levi Johnston! In The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin, author Joe McGinniss alleges that before Sarah become governor of Alaska, she and husband Todd Palin snorted cocaine off an overturned 55-gallon oil drum during a snowmobile trip — though that really sounds like more of a ski trip to me.
The book also claims that Sarah had a one-night stand with NBA star Glen Rice in 1987, when Glen was junior at the University of Michigan and Sarah was a sports reporter for the Alaskan TV station Ktuu. Glen was playing in a basketball tournament in Alaska at the time, and according to a friend, “Sarah hauled [Glen's] ass down.”
Whatever that means.
So what do...

A new book is about to hit shelves that alleges some bombshells about former Alaska governor and possible 2012 presidential candidate Sarah Palin, reports the National Enquirer. The tabloid says it has spoken with sources close to author Joe McGinniss, who is publishing the book "The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin" on Sept. 20.
According to the sources, McGinniss' book details Palin's alleged fling with former NBA great Glen Rice when he was in Alaska for a college basketball tournament in 1987, just nine months before Palin eloped with now-husband Todd. At the time, Palin was working as a sports reporter for the Anchorage station Ktuu and the sources claim the book has Rice confirming the one-night stand. The book allegedly goes so far as to say that Palin had a "fetish" for black men.

Sarah Palin has welcomed the arrival of another grandchild, it has been reported. According to journalist Joe McGinniss, a baby girl named Kyla Grace Palin was born on Sunday night, August 7. The newborn is the first daughter to the former vice presidential candidate's eldest son, Track, and his wife, Britta.
Contradicting the birth date, however, was Radar Online, which claimed that Britta gave birth to Kyla on Saturday, August 6. The gossip site also cited her mother, Elizabeth, as saying, "Kyla Grace is great. She's beautiful. I'm very happy." She added, "I love my daughter and my son-in-law very much."
Back in May, it was announced that Track married his high school sweetheart, Britta, in a small ceremony in Hatcher Pass, Alaska. The Palins and Hansons said in a joint statement about the union, "Our families couldn't be happier!" Sarah herself tweeted, "Yes, they did & we couldn't be any more blessed!

Courtesy of Howard Books. If being a campaign volunteer for Sarah Palin sounds like an unrewarding way to spend your free time, then you and Frank Bailey have something in common. Because, as he reveals in Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin (Howard Books), being loyal to Palin—even from her self-described humble beginnings—does not guarantee you her loyalty in return: Palin will make you engage in the sort of questionable political behavior she promised she would never do. Bailey, whose book comes out this week, began working with Palin as a campaign volunteer during her race for governor of Alaska in 2006, rising to a public-office position after she won. Palin’s unspoken campaign slogan became “Truth optional,” writes Bailey. “Win at all costs.” Earlier this year, rival biographer Joe McGinniss—with his own Palin tell-all due this fall—got his hands on the book’s manuscript and unceremoniously distributed it across the Internet.

Sarah Palin's new reality TV series debuts this weekend. Shushannah Walshe talks to producer Mark Burnett about Palin's massive payday, her 2012 race, and how the show may make her more appealing politically.
Sarah Palin's slick, new reality show, premiering this Sunday night, may qualify as the earliest, most expensive presidential campaign ad ever made.

Produced by the godfather of reality TV, Mark Burnett, and costing several million dollars, 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' is nominally an educational portrait of the largest U.S. state. Sarah Palin, plays photojournalist on Facebook. Salacious new details have emerged about writer Joe McGinniss’s recent move to Sarah Palin Lane, located in snowy Wasilla, Alaska. McGinniss’s son Joe Jr. told Politico’s Ben Smith that Joe Sr. had been courted by Palin’s neighbor in a classic case (?) of revenge-by-rental. “A woman was renting her house and sought out the author because the Palins had crossed her (owed her money for renovations she had done at their request and never paid her for). So she knew McGinniss was writing the book and found him and offered him the house.” Bam!

Many people “Like” this! Sarah Palin announced in a Facebook message yesterday that (in)famous journalist Joe McGinniss has become Wasilla’s newest resident. “Here he is—about 15 feet away on the neighbor’s rented deck overlooking my children’s play area and my kitchen window. Maybe we’ll welcome him with a homemade blueberry pie tomorrow so he’ll know how friendly Alaskans are,” she wrote. Ha ha, maybe—or maybe not, right? McGinniss told Todd Palin that he’ll be researching his new book, said to be called Sarah Palin’s Year of Living Dangerously, and expects his occupancy to last five months.
