The BBC is celebrating the art of the literary adaptation by screening a variety of classics on BBC Four. More details here.
The BBC is quite rightly celebrated for its rich history of book to screen adaptations, such as the iconic 1995 version of Jane Austen’a Pride And Prejudice to Cbbc’s hugely successful adaptation of Dame Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker series.
It has now put together a season of 14 adaptations from the BBC archive, some of which have rarely been seen since their original broadcast.
The dramas are:
The Great Gatsby
Toby Stephens, Mira Sorvino and Paul Rudd lead the cast in this 2000 BBC adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel on the American dream in the jazz age.
Small Island
Naomie Harris, Ruth Wilson, David Oyelowo, Benedict Cumberbatch and Ashley Walters star in this 2009 TV version of Andrea Levy’s novel focusing on the lives and...

Stephen Graham and Brian May are among the celebrities to be recognised in the New Year Honours List 2023.
This list marks the first published since the late Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September and the first to be signed off by her son King Charles III. A total of 1,107 recipients, 50 per cent of whom are women, make up this year’s list.
Bafta-winner Graham, best known for his starring role in This is England and The Irishman, is set to receive an OBE, while Queen guitarist Sir Brian “has been appointed a knight bachelor for services to music and charity”.
“I regard it as a kind of charge, like a kind of commission to do the things that one would expect a knight to do – to fight for justice, to fight for people who don’t have any voice,” Sir Brian said of the new award.

Leslie Phillips, Debonair British Actor of ‘Carry On,’ ‘Doctor’ and ‘Harry Potter’ Films, Dies at 98
Click here to read the full article.
Leslie Phillips, the British actor and Casanova of the Carry On movies who turned to serious supporting roles in Out of Africa and Empire of the Sun before voicing The Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter franchise, has died. He was 98.
Phillips died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, agent Jonathan Lloyd told the BBC on Tuesday.
With an eye for the ladies onscreen and off, the sophisticated Phillips appeared in more than 170 roles across screens big and small, portraying policemen, military officials, reverends and judges. But for audiences in the 1950s and ’60s, he was synonymous with the low-budget Carry On and Doctor series (he took over from Dirk Bogarde in the latter).
In the ’80s, he distanced himself from his playboy roles to lend gravitas to Sydney Pollack’s Oscar best picture winner Out of Africa (1985) and to Steven Spielberg’s...

Global superstars including Dame Judi Dench, Russell Crowe, Ricky Gervais, Sir Paul McCartney, Joaquin Phoenix, William Shatner and Richard Gere have come together to support Animals Asia taking a big step towards saving the Asiatic black bear (aka moon bear) species from extinction in Vietnam.
Animals Asia is ending bear bile farming in Vietnam, a long-standing cruel practice that has been pushing moon bears towards extinction in the country. The industry in Vietnam relies on restocking from wild populations and as a consequence, Vietnam’s Asiatic black bear population faces the most severe decline on record, according to The International Union for Conservation of Nature (Iucn).
As the Vietnamese Government’s official solution partner in bringing the industry to a close, the organisation begins to rescue the last remaining bears on bile farms in Vietnam (around 400) and close the farms for good one by one in the country. Once the last bear is saved,...

Ricky Gervais, pop star Mýa, actors Dame Judi Dench, Olivia Newton-John and Tzi Ma, and renowned conservationist Dame Jane Goodall have come together to record an impassioned video calling for a reset of humanity’s relationship with nature in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis and its zoonotic origins. However it’s two baby bears who have stolen the spotlight.
In mid-July, as the celebrities recorded their video messages, Animals Asia rescued two three-month-old moon bear cubs that had been illegally trapped and put on sale on the black market, and are now taking care of them at the Ngo’s sanctuary in Tam Dao, Vietnam.

“If this crisis has taught us anything, it’s the power of leaving nature alone – and that The Only Cure is Kindness”, said British comedian Ricky Gervais.

World-renowned conservationist Jane Goodall Ph.D., Dbe, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, and Un Messenger of Peace, has joined with animal protection charity Humane Society International to issue a heart-felt plea to the European Union not to overturn a ban passed last week at the Cites wildlife trade conference in Geneva that would end the capture of baby African elephants from the wild for export to zoos and circuses in China, the USA and elsewhere.
The ban was voted on and passed by the required 2/3 majority vote in Committee I of Cites largely because the EU was unable to vote due to a procedural issue (it had not yet filed its credentials). However a representative for the European Commission took to the floor to speak against the ban, and with its credentials now in order, the voting bloc of 28 looks set to oppose the decision in the plenary this week.

If it’s the ‘70s, it must be time for some good old apocalyptica; Rosemary’s Baby (1968) beget The Exorcist (1973) and countless rip-offs, and that beget The Omen (’76), which brought a demonic little imp to box office success. But it certainly wouldn’t be the last time we saw the Spawn O’ Satan try to take over, as evidenced by The Chosen (1977), a British-Italian co-production that brings the hellfire in the most ludicrous (read: best) ways.
Released in Italy in November, The Chosen was rolled out to the rest of the world throughout 1978, with Rank Films picking up distribution rights for the U.K. and Aip for North America. No critics at the time picked it up, however; the majority just snidely regarded it as a The Omen toss off and went on their way. This favorite animal film takes a half-step sideways out of the cute animal subgenre: the delightful Mij is no super-otter, just an ordinary playful garden-variety otter, as an Otter oughta be. (cough) Champion mellow English couple Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers have put together a film guaranteed to lower your blood pressure. But see it first before deciding it’s for your kids, as reality is not sugarcoated in its uplifting, but certainly not sentimentalized, view of our place in a world that still has some animals left alive.

The species has declined by up to 40 percent in the past 30 years. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s (exceedingly difficult) question: In honor of our nation’s upcoming birthday, what is the movie that still makes you most proud to be an American? Or, for foreign critics: What film most compelling sells you on the promise of America’s potential?
Joshua Rothkopf (@joshrothkopf), Time Out New York
I know there are movies that are more complex, but “Apollo 13” gets me every time. It begins with the cynical idea of an American Dream that’s already in the rearview mirror: Moon launches, once the pride of a nation, have become routine — yesterday’s news. But journalists swarm when the orbiting crew falls into jeopardy.

Here's a brief look – to be expanded – at Turner Classic Movies' June 2017 European Vacation Movie Series this evening, June 23. Tonight's destination of choice is Italy. Starring Suzanne Pleshette and Troy Donahue as the opposite of Ugly Americans who find romance and heartbreak in the Italian capital, Delmer Daves' Rome Adventure (1962) was one of the key romantic movies of the 1960s. Angie Dickinson and Rossano Brazzi co-star. In all, Rome Adventure is the sort of movie that should please fans of Daves' Technicolor melodramas like A Summer Place, Parrish, and Susan Slade. Fans of his poetic Westerns – e.g., 3:10 to Yuma, The Hanging Tree – may (or may not) be disappointed with this particular Daves effort. As an aside, Rome Adventure was, for whatever reason, a sizable hit in … Brazil. Who knows, maybe that's why Rome Adventure co-star Brazzi would find himself playing a Brazilian – a macho, traditionalist coffee plantation owner,...

While the vast majority of our favorite films of last year have been treated with Blu-ray releases, one title near the top of the list we’ve been waiting the longest for is Kelly Reichardt‘s Certain Women. It looks like it’s been worth the wait as The Criterion Collection have unveiled their September releases and it’s leading the pack (with special features also an interview with the director and Todd Haynes!).
Also getting a release in September, is Michael Haneke‘s Isabelle Huppert-led The Piano Teacher and the recent documentary David Lynch: The Art Life (arriving perfectly-timed to the end of the new Twin Peaks). There’s also Alfred Hitchcock‘s classic psychodrama Rebecca and the concert film Festival, featuring Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, and many more.
Check out the high-resolution cover art and full details on the releases below, with more on Criterion’s site.

Five new movies are joining the Criterion Collection in September, two of which were released in the last year: Kelly Reichardt’s spare, moving “Certain Women” and the documentary “David Lynch: The Art Life.” Also getting the Criterion treatment are Michael Haneke’s “The Piancho Teacher,” starring Isabelle Huppert; “Rebecca,” Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier novel and his first American production; and Murray Lerner’s documentary “Festival,” which features performances by Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, among others.
It isn’t Criterion’s most exciting month, but there’s still much to look forward to. Details below, including Criterion’s own descriptions:

In September 2015, local agencies responded to a neighbor’s call about a mobile home in the remote Arnold Valley section of Rockbridge County, Virginia, according to courthouse officials.
Investigators discovered a terrible scene of filth and violence at the home, where half-siblings Robert Eugene Clark, 39, and Samantha Simmons, 30, were sexually abusing two girls, about 4 and 8 years old at the time, authorities alleged.
This week, Clark and Simmons were sentenced to prison after he entered an Alford plea — a type of guilty plea in which the defendant maintains their innocence — and she pleaded guilty.
Here are five things to know about the case.

Whilst he’s not yet signed on the dotted line, it sounds like a formality at this stage.

Ron Alston, Jr. started trying to instill confidence in his daughter before she was even born.
“I would play the 1996 Chicago Bulls anthem to her mom’s stomach,” he says, referring to the Alan Parsons’ Projects’ ‘Sirius,’ “and that’s the greatest basketball team ever, so I knew she was going to be the greatest.”
He even wanted to play the song in the delivery room, but the hospital wouldn’t let him bring his phone in, he says.
After she was born, he switched to the Sesame Street gang singing “What I Am” and “Don’t Give Up,” two songs with other inspirational messages.

Before his third attempt, Mechanic brought on Randall Wallace, who wrote Braveheart, to take a pass at the script.
.Randall's changes were not earth shattering,. says Mechanic. .He won't be credited in the final screenplay. But I think it might have made it more appealing to Mel to read [that] Randy was working on it..

Domestic weekend estimates are in, but the full story won't be told until actuals arrive Monday afternoon as the top two films are within a mere fraction of one another as severe winter weather had a clear effect on this weekend's grosses. For the time being Rogue One: A Star Wars Story holds the top spot over Fox's expanded release of Hidden Figures by less than $200,000. The weekend's lone new wide release, Screen Gems's Underworld: Blood Wars, scored a fourth place finish while Focus's expansion of A Monster Calls failed to generate much interest despite strong reviews and audience response, ultimately finishing outside the top ten. Currently holding the #1 spot for the weekend is Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which dropped 55.7% and finished with an estimated $21.97 million as its domestic cume climbs to $477.2 million, placing it just $9 million behind Finding Dory as it is soon to become...

In court papers lodged Tuesday, Katie Couric contends that a gun rights group has read too much into pregnant silence in Under the Gun. She's now moved for dismissal of a $13 million lawsuit with the argument that eight seconds from the 120-minute documentary are incapable of defamatory meaning.
In September, the Virginia Citizens Defense League brought the lawsuit against Couric, Under the Gun director Stephanie Soechtig, Epix and others associated with the documentary.
The controversial scene shows Couric asking Vcdl members, "If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?"

The Other Mozart Written by Sylvia Milo Directed by Isaac Byrne Presented by Little Matchstick Factory at The Players Theatre, NYC September 23-November 13, 2016 and January 6-9, 2017 Mozart is one of those artists who has attained single-name status. Sylvia Milo has an answer, and her The Other Mozart aims to shatter the perception that produces the question in the first place. This NY Innovative Theater award-winning play has toured internationally since its 2014 debut in New York City, including in Mozart's birthplace, Salzburg, and has returned to the city of its own birth for another run. Featuring both period music and compositions by newly Grammy-nominated Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen, The Other Mozart shines its light on Wolfgang's older sister, Maria Anna. When filmmaker Mel Gibson decided to tell the World War II story of Desmond Doss, a brave soldier who saved 75 of his company at the battle of Hacksaw Ridge in Okinawa, Japan, he made the choice to return home to Australia to do it. After months of gruesome speculation over which of The Group met Lucille, fans will have a definitive answer. Negan will settle in as the new villain, and the precious inches of happiness and hope carved out by the population of Alexandria will be obliterated. Yay? I have been trying to write down my thoughts about The Walking Dead for weeks. Here we have a show that has garnered the interest of a huge number of people. Audiences have flocked to the dystopian zombie universe like a metaphorical herd. But that means after six seasons, there is a lot of pressure to keep viewers on their toes. The logic goes that if fans know the cast is safe, the drama dissipates. It’s that same...

Not even a stir-crazy Fornell and a snappy Dr. Grace could really save "Privileged Information" from being bland and predictable.
As soon as they introduced the sister, I was suspicious of her; regardless of the sister's apparent grief over the victim's imminent demise, I tend to heavily weigh on Ebert's law of conservation of characters. In short, rarely will a character be introduced if he or she does not have some part to play.
They tried to pull a fast one with Griffin Dorn (who was even ex-cia!).
