Not many careers have been launched with a tear. Sinead O’Connor shot to No 1 when her video for “Nothing Compares 2 U” first aired on MTV at the dawn of the Nineties. As O’Connor sang, face to camera, her eyes welled, especially around the lines: “All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard / All died when you went away.” The words had particular resonance for O’Connor, who as a child had suffered serious physical abuse at the hands of her mother. “It was an emotional thing for me,” said O’Connor. “My mother was an extremely violent person. Someone who wasn’t well.” O’Connor’s mother was killed in a car accident in the mid-Eighties. By 1990, the abuse was still difficult for O’Connor to come to terms with. The video for “Nothing Compares 2 U” was something of a cathartic experience for the Irish singer.

In the new book This Thing Called Life, journalist Neal Karlen tells the story not just of Prince’s life, but of a rare, decades-long friendship between a writer and an iconic artist. Karlen knew Prince growing up in Minneapolis and was his only confidant in the press for more than a decade at the height of his fame, a partnership that yielded three Rolling Stone cover stories. In this chapter from the book, entitled “Last Call,” Karlen looks back on the last time he ever talked to Prince. This...

Prince’s unheard work-in-progress version of “Forever in My Life” is the latest preview from the upcoming Sign O’ the Times reissue.
The “early” in “Forever in My Life (Early Vocal Studio Run-Through)” refers not to when the version was recorded — August 8th, 1986 in Prince’s Galpin Boulevard home studio — but what time of day the vocal track was first laid down.

“Prince was like nobody I had ever worked with before,” says one of his longtime recording engineers, Peggy McCreary. “He never explained anything to me. You never knew who a song was for until somebody got called in to sing on it.”
McCreary, whose credits also include monolithic albums like Van Halen’s self-titled debut and Toto’s IV, worked with the artist from 1982 to 1987, the peak of his fame. You would think she would have known him well, but she says getting close to him was an impossible task.

Two days ahead of the second anniversary of Prince’s death, the artist’s estate, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Records, today released the original version of his iconic song “Nothing Compares 2 U”. The version, which was written and performed entirely by Prince except for some backing vocal and saxophone work, formed the basis for the original officially-released version of the song by The Family. That group, which was masterminded anonymously by Prince, included musicians from several of his projects, including singers Susannah Melvoin (twin sister of the Revolution’s Wendy) and Paul Peterson and saxophonist Eric Leeds, whose work appears on this version. It was recorded in July of 1984 during sessions that also produced material for “Around the World in a Day,” the follow-up to the “Purple Rain” album.

Renée Zellweger has been supporting her boyfriend, Doyle Bramhall, financially. E! News obtained the court documents involved in the musician's divorce from estranged wife Susannah Melvoin in which it's revealed Zellweger has allowed Bramhall to live with her for free. Not to mention, the docs also state she's been paying for his credit cards that have added up between $4,000 to $5,000 a month. The docs go on to state that the totaled expenses in 2015 added up to nearly $60,000. Of course, this bodes the questions: Why does this matter and why did Zellweger get pulled into the divorce in the first place? Melvoin filed the information last year, noting she wants the judge to...

What do you say about Purple Rain that hasn't already been said? Not only is it one of the greatest music films of all time, but it's one of the defining films of the 1980s and earned Prince an Oscar. The soundtrack spent nearly a full half-year at Number One on the Billboard charts, sold 20 million copies worldwide and won two Grammys. But as with all things Prince, that's not the full story. A number of truly excellent books and articles have been written about the making of Purple Rain, and we're here to share some of the best bits of them with you.

It's entirely possible to be a massive Prince fan — to recognize him as the most influential musician since James Brown and the most dexterous since Stevie Wonder — and still admit that he never quite cracked his ambition to be a movie star. His three fictional films — the iconic Purple Rain and the forgotten Under the Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge — never enraptured the way his albums did, partly because there was always something otherworldly and ephemeral about Prince Rogers Nelson that never translated to the screen. Like his fellow Minnesotan Bob Dylan,...

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!
