The new SciFiRiot channel, run by Digiriot, has added a Streamy-winning director to its list of talent. The second season of Blake Calhoun's Continuum has been released for free on the recently minted science fiction hub, which has filled out a full weekly schedule of new shows. Continuum is Calhoun's most recent project, following up his Streamy winner, Pink. It stars LonelyGirl15's Melanie Merkosky as an intergalactic Jason Bourne of sorts who must spacewalk around her haunting, sterile ship looking for answers. After season one arrived in full back in early 2012, Calhoun released season two in April on pay-to-view platform Jts.tv. More than three months later, all nine episodes are now under SciFiRiot's control, and it has now released the first one. Continuum joins five other new shows on SciFiRiot; some, like Neubauer, a futuristic neo-noir, are classic, hard sci-fi. Others, such as Sci-Fine Dining, whimsically fuse together multiple genres (cooking,...

It took Blake Calhoun more than two years to turn Continuum from an original idea into a full-fledged web series. Luckily for fans of the series, the gap between seasons one and two is not nearly as broad. Calhoun has released nine new episodes of Continuum through pay-to-view platform Jts.TV, where they can be seen by purchasing a monthly pass for $3.99 The entire first season is available for free viewing on Jts.TV; more conveniently, it also has a home on YouTube, where the second season will end up during the summer. The original run features sterile, 2001-esque sci-fi visuals and solid acting from web series notables such as lonelygirl15's Melanie Merkosky and industry vet Taryn O'Neill. If that sounds like your kind of show, expect season two--which begins at the cliffhanger that ended episode nine--to provide more of the same. Calhoun is best known as the creator of Pink,...

Continuum is one of those anticipated independent series on our list long due to a check-in. It was after all, announced back in February of 2010 as Streamy-winning Pink director Blake Calhoun’s next project. Now the series is finally teasing out on the interwebs with a special Facebook-only exclusive release of the first three episodes. Continuum is a move into the more heady sci-fi realm for Calhoun and co., in what they are billing as “a futuristic thriller in the noir-ish tradition of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien.” Melanie Merkosky (Harper’s Globe, lonelygirl15) stars as a Reagan, a woman waking up inside a space ship without any memory whatsoever of why she is there. Taryn O’Neill voices the ship’s computer—or at least eventually does about midway through the first episode. Online video and web series news worth clicking today… Workshop the series debuts Season 2 today on Hulu after inking a distribution deal with the network earlier this spring. Creator Nate Golon is calling it the first half-hour web comedy to premiere on the site, and looking back over our records, he may be right. “As an added bonus, we’ve also posted episode 2, since people were patient enough to wait an extra week,” said Golon on the launch. That means you’ll need to earmark about 44 minutes for this comedic look inside the world of struggling La actors. 20 minutes in, we’d have to say it’s worth it. Six episodes total are due out this season, adding up to a whopping 132 minutes of comedy. [Workshop on Hulu] ElfQuest came to life last night with the SAG screening and release of the “fan imagined” trailer for a would-be series based on the popular comic book series.

lg15-in-the-bedroomIn the Bedroom, the 433rd episode of lonelygirl15, broke the 50 million view mark on YouTube. The video is also currently number 13 on the all-time most viewed list for the Entertainment category and the 81st most viewed video of all time on YouTube. Jonas (Jackson Davis) posted the video on March 7th, 2008, where it quickly racked up the views and continues to do so, averaging approximately 80,000 new views a day some two years after the conclusion of the series. Granted much of the video's views can be attributed to the provocative title and enticing thumbnail (which the LG15 producers inserted as a flash frame into the exact center of the video - at the 1:26 mark - so YouTube would be sure to grab it). The image features a suggestive shot of Jennie (Melanie Merkosky) in bed. Also, the video contains one of the series' more memorable surprises as well as an important plot point.

The apocalyptic end of the world drama is such a played out subgenre that there’s nothing left to do but make fun of it. And if you’re Woody Tondorf making fun of things is what you do best. This is after all the same guy that created one of YouTube’s most popular scripted comedy web series Elevator, that racked up over 20 million views in its 3-year run. Tondorf's latest comedy is aiming to do just that. Apocalypse Wow released their first trailer later yesterday evening, after screening it down at Comic-Con in San Diego last month. As of now the project is just a pilot episode and trailer, produced on what Tondorf says is “a tiny spec budget” in hopes of luring in investors or one of the online studios or networks to pick up the series. Tondorf teamed up with Blue Movies creator Scott Brown, who directed the promo episodes,...

On the heaviest day of Comic-Con, one might think that having a major off-site event, to be held in the midst of some heavy hitting panels, might not be the strongest plan ever conceived. Showing up early to the event at the Bristol Hotel, I watched as some of the finishing touches were applied to the set-up. This was not the last-minute, throw-something-together-in-four-days event from this past April. Nor was it the end-all, be-all of panels. This was simply the next logical step for the web series industry, in a long road to having an entire section of the convention marked out for us. Run by Jenni Powell, Taryn O'Neill and Stephanie Thorpe, Celebrate the Web 2 came together with a different tone from the previous outing. Where the original event did so out of a need to heal some wounds, this time around the tone was stronger: “We’re here to stay,...

Today kicked off the official start of new interactive thriller web series Harper's Globe from the team at Eqal, creators of lonelygirl15 and KateModern. Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried, the creative minds behind the series popularized highly interactive low-fi video blogging dramas, basically setting the bar for the genre. The online series stars former lonelygirl15 regular Melanie Merkosky, as newcomer Robin Matthews to the sleepy vacation island who is tasked with digitizing old news archives from the local paper. Her mysterious past and penchant for video presumably make her the fitting conduit to get to the bottom what's really going on around the island—that is, people getting killed off one by one.
