We chat to Skulduggery Pleasant author about the movie adaptation, new trilogy Demon Road, horror influences, Feminism and Doctor Who…
Derek Landy is excited. Next week, he's going to see two of his favourite 80s films on the big screen for the first time. His publisher Harper Collins is hosting screenings of Joe Dante's Gremlins and Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street at London's Picturehouse Central (win tickets to both, here) for Landy's legion fans as part of the publicity circuit for book two of his Demon Road trilogy, Desolation.
Landy made his name in Young Adult fantasy with the nine-book Skulduggery Pleasant series about a skeleton detective and his teenage girl accomplice. The huge success of the first Skulduggery novel was a tornado that lifted him Dorothy-like straight out of his family's farm in Ireland and plonked him down in Hollywood where he...

The year was 1999 and by the summer, teen films were all the rage. The year kicked off with two unexpected box office successes, Varsity Blues and She’s All That, before studios started pumping out hit after hit. In the same year, Drop Dead Gorgeous, a dark comedy about teenage girls competing in a local Minnesota beauty pageant, bombed at the box office. Unable to capture the same excitement as American Pie or 10 Things I Hate About You, the film quickly disappeared from theaters after earning a dismal $10.5 million at the box office.
It was only later, when released on DVD and VHS, did the movie become a cult classic. Similarly to Jawbreaker, which also came out in 1999, Drop Dead Gorgeous proved to be a pivotal film — introducing audiences to Amy Adams, making use of the mockumentary style — even if it was overlooked at the time.

Written by David Cohen
Directed by Ryuhei Kitamura
Returning to Midnight Madness for the first time since his 2000 film Versus, Director Ryuhei Kitamura brings us a messy, bloody and disturbing case of why it pay to not judge a book by its cover with No One Lives. The twisted tale of a team of break and enter specialists who pick on the wrong person is unflinching and forces you to root for someone where there is no presented worthy of it. But does No One Lives deliver on the promise of its premise?
We open on a young girl tearing through the woods in a desperate, and unsuccessful, attempt to escape an unseen assailant. We learn of a brutal massacre that has left fourteen students dead and...

Olivia Munn has joined Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike cast. Deadline reports that Olivia Munn is negotiating to play the role of Amber, the love interest to Channing Tatum. The films cast includes Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Riley Keough, Cody Horn and Gabriel Iglesias.
The script was written by Reid Carolin and tells the real-life story of Tatum'early career as a male stripper. According to Deadline, Tatum plays the title character, "who schools a young dancer (Pettyfer) in how to hustle on and off the stage. It's a wild summer of dancing, partying, and women. The inspiration was Channing's own experiences as a stripper when he was 19." Tatum and Nick Wechsler are producing with Gregory Jacobs and Carolin.
Munn will next be seen opposite Sarah Jessica Parker in I Don’t Know How She Does It for and the Aaron Sorkin HBO pilot More As The Story Develops.

Like a ballerina completing an elegant and unexpected leap, So You Think You Can Dance floated back onto our TV sets Thursday night and demanded our attention — exhaustion from the end of May sweeps and the yawning aftermath of yet another long Idol season be damned.
The two-hour Season 8 premiere had its share of the freakish (including a former stripper whose eyeshadow application was a thing of clownish horror) and the freaky (like “the insect,” a guy who put his spine down, flipped it and reversed it…so to speak). Without further ado, I will now count down my five...

Nigel Lithgoe, never one to rest on his laurels, was back on the air Thursday (May 26) with his other competition show, "So You Think You Can Dance," a mere 24 hours after "American Idol" crowned Scotty McCreery its season 10 winner.
We've got a ways to go until these dancers sweep us off our feet, but Atlanta and San Francisco got us off on the right foot with some nimble-footed pros and some seriously talented street dancers.
It's a little early to start talking contenders, but Jeffery McCann, who showed up up for the San Francisco auditions, stole the show with his breakdancing. Yes, breakdancing. It was that good, that choreographed, that athletic. B-boy perfection. We'd love to see him make it this season by crossing over into other dance forms. It would be totally like "Breakin" (not like "Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo"). And we may just get to see it happen...

Sunday’s episode of The Killing introduced a mystery that has left me as obsessed as the matter of Rosie Larsen’s murder: Just how many Del Tacos are there in Seattle? Linden’s fiancé Rick poked at the detective’s increasingly bad eating habits as she gave more of her time and mind to the investigation. “Drive-thru at the Del Taco doesn’t count,” he said. Linden smiled at his concern. “Busted!” she said. Now, I grew up in Seattle, and I don’t recall a whole lot of Del Taco franchises. According to its website, the fast food...

Over the weekend we posted our interview with Zack Snyder, which may have resolved some of the debates about Sucker Punch, but probably just added more fuel to the blazing arguments about the film. The same day we spoke to Snyder, we also spoke to the film’s five escapees: Emily Browning (Baby Doll), Jenna Malone (Rocket), Abbie Cornish (Sweet Pea), Vanessa Hudgens (Blondie) and Jamie Chung (Amber). They regaled us with stories of brutal training regimes, gun play, and how Snyder communicated his vision.
——————–
Describe the film in one sentence
Malone: It’s basically like a prison break film about five young girls that band together, and what they’re willing to sacrifice for their freedom.
On prep for role
Malone: It’s pretty epic; both of us had never really even been to the gym before.
Malone: Day one was kind of the most terrifying moment of my life.

Director Zack Snyder’s back with the action fantasy, Sucker Punch. But can it offer more than the eye candy we’ve seen in its trailers? Here’s our review...
With Dawn Of The Dead and 300, Zack Snyder established himself as a skilful director of effects-laden action blockbusters. And after the tepid performance of Watchmen and his family-friendly owl project, Legends Of The Guardians, Snyder brings us his magnum opus, Sucker Punch, a sprawling action fantasy with an ensemble female cast and eye-bulging special effects.
Sucker Punch opens with a flurry of high-octane editing, and rarely lets up for two hours. We’re introduced to youthful, blonde heroine Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who accidentally shoots her younger sister while attempting to fend off the advances of her disgusting stepfather.
Packed off to a home for the criminally insane, Baby Doll faces a gloomy fate: a lobotomy and further abuse from the home’s boss,...

Another week's gone by and that brings a new assortment of things to catch up with on DVD. Go back in time and battle with barbarians or relive The Exorcist with the recently released remastered version of The Director's Cut. Perhaps you might dive beneath the sea and visit a poorly constructed Atlantis? Whatever your taste (even if it's blood), there's something to be found in this weeks slate of DVDs.

Barely enough time for season 5 champ Jeanine Mason to enjoy her first paparazzi moment, Fox's hit So You Think You Can Dance is back for its first fall season, and this time the bar is set to the moon as they search for America's favorite dancer. Judges Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe kicked things off Wednesday in the talent melting pot of Los Angeles, where 18-year-old Mollee Gray, who appeared as a principal dancer in all three High School Musical movies, showed off top-notch raw talent and got a plane ticket to Vegas. The judges seemed satisfied as more deserving hopefuls landed tickets including a returning Ryan Kasprzak, the lovable older brother of season 5's second runner-up Evan who, after wowing the room with his scat-tapping magic act that Shankman called “the best audition I've ever seen on this show,” took on fellow returning tapper Bianca Revels for...
