Pac-12 Announces Deal with The CW to Broadcast Oregon State, Washington State Football Games in 2024
The Pac-12 will join football and basketball from the Acc, Liv Golf tournaments and NASCAR races on The CW.
The Oregon State Beavers and Washington State Cougars may have been abandoned by their former Pac-12 compatriots, but they’re not ready to declare the 2024 season a wash as far as broadcasting goes. The two teams won’t see any games broadcast on Pac-12 Network, as that channel is likely to be shut down this summer. But on Tuesday, the two schools still remaining in the Pac-12 announced that they had agreed to terms on a deal with The CW to broadcast some of their games throughout the 2024 season.
Key Details: Oregon State and Washington State will play a total of 11 games on The CW in 2024. The CW is a free, over-the-air network with a growing range of sports rights. Viewers can watch The CW on one of four...

Have you ever stopped to marvel at the wonders human talent can achieve? Take Tom Hanks’ example, whose popularity stems from his roles in major blockbusters like Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, and Saving Private Ryan, making him one of Hollywood’s top actors. But that is not the only thing the 67-year-old is good at; he is also a terrific voice actor and is equally adept at comedy and impersonation.
Tom Hanks in Catch Me If You Can
Since he first joined the five-timers club, he has hosted numerous episodes of Saturday Night Live in addition to making several cameos. In a sketch titled ‘The Stand-Ups’, which Hanks performed during his first Saturday Night Live hosting gig, stand-up comedians conversed backstage while using the same voices they did on stage.

Jimmy Failla isn’t taking over Fox News Chanel, but he has, at least for one short period in the late afternoon, seized control of a portion of its New York ground-floor facilities.
The space is typically devoted to a space for guests to hang out and a section for hair and makeup, but Failla uses it to get himself revved up to tape “Fox News Saturday Night,” a program the network says is devoted less to red-versus-blue rants and more to making people laugh. The hallway leading to his studio was flooded with the sounds of rockabilly and Queen.
“True comedy doesn’t have a political party. Comedy is a party,’ says the 47-year-old comedian, who hails from a family of cops and, prior to his tenure at Fox News was supplementing his stand-up income by driving a New York taxi. “And at a party, you don’t ask...

The CW is giving viewers an early taste of NASCAR coverage, adding eight Xfinity Series races to the fall schedule ahead of the 2025 start of a 6-year rights deal.
The run of season-ending races will start September 20 in the Xfinity Series Championship from Phoenix Raceway on Saturday, November 9. NBC Sports will handle production, with Rick Allen serving as lead race announcer alongside analysts Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte, and NBC Sports VP of Motorsports Jeff Behnke in charge of production.
The CW announced last summer that it will will take over exclusive rights in 2025 to the NASCAR Xfinity Series, which is on the next tier down from NASCAR’s main Cup Series but nonetheless has an avid fan base. Most of the Xfinity Series drivers are young up-and-comers in the sport, and the races take place in major cities and on many well-established tracks.

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, has “ambitious” goals.
As The CW moves away from only serving young adult audiences towards rivaling the Big Four broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC – Schwartz knows he needs to find a hit to do that.
This, after all, is the man credited with helping Schitt’s Creek become an Emmy-winning smash.
“We recognize where we’re coming from. We’re the underdogs competing against Titans. But ultimately what we’re striving for is to have everyone stop writing big four networks and start writing big five network. “We’re ready for people to stop writing about the Big Four networks and start writing the Big Five,” announced Brad Schwartz, The CW’s president of entertainment, at the top of a Thursday morning meeting with TV press.
It’s an obvious aspiration for broadcast’s long-suffering stepchild, but the timing is a bit odd. The cachet of the “Big Four” — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — diminishes more and more each year, rendering the term more of a nostalgic catchphrase than an accurate representation of the true TV power brokers in the age of streaming saturation. Still, growth and a diversified (and, often, less expensive) programming portfolio is exactly what Nexstar Media Group has pursued after completing its acquisition of The CW in 2022. That’s involved a big gamble of the Saudi-backed Liv Golf league, canceling all but four scripted series in the inherited CW slate and banking big on acquisitions.

The CW met the Television Critics Assn. for the first time since its ownership and brand makeover — and both president Dennis Miller and entertainment president Brad Schwartz came armed with a message: The CW wants to be considered a “Big 5” network, right alongside ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.

If anyone should be able to engineer a reunion of “Saturday Night Live” alumni, it should be Dan Aykroyd.

Millennials rejoice! 26 years later, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are once again serving up fast-food morsels in the achingly-awaited "Good Burger 2." Folks who grew up on Nickelodeon's kid-friendly sketch comedy series "All That" have been clamoring for a return to the chaotically unclean confines of Good Burger, and now that it's here, I'll let those whose satiric sensibilities were partially formed by the original pass judgment on the quality of the sequel.
I do, however, know Sinbad. A comedic force of nature, I first saw the man rack up multiple wins on the Ed McMahon-hosted talent competition "Star Search" in the 1980s. I remember watching him besting a young Dennis Miller; this bothered me at the time, but considering Miller's career trajectory, I am firmly in Sinbad's camp. After all, who else possessed the bravery to ask which part of the chicken produced the Chicken McNugget?

The network will air 52 live weekly events throughout the season, making Nxt the latest addition to the CW’s growing roster of live sports, including Acc football and basketball games airing Saturdays throughout the season, and Liv Golf. The CW is also the new home of weekly studio series Inside the NFL and will broadcast the NASCAR Xfinity Series beginning in 2025. The network said it will soon offer more than 500 hours of sports programming.

WWE’s weekly Nxt show is heading to The CW.
Nxt, which serves as a showcase for WWE’s developmental talent, currently airs on USA Network but will move to CW in October 2024 in a new five-year deal. A source close to the deal pegged the value of the deal to WWE at about $20 million-$25 million a year.
Nxt will air weekly throughout the year on CW, marking the first time the show has aired on broadcast television since it launched its weekly format in 2012.
“Between the new leadership and ownership, the economics of the deal and with their broadcast network now being in over 100 million homes, it became a no brainer to move Nxt, one of our signature weekly shows, to the CW,” said Nick Khan, president of WWE.

This past weekend, the tragic news came down that the popular "Friends" star Matthew Perry passed away at the age of 54. Most well-known for playing Chandler Bing, the fan-favorite character many considered to be the beating heart of the classic sitcom, the actor's career spanned several decades and included appearances on dozens and dozens of various movies and shows. As the world continues to mourn the loss of such an icon, countless fans have come forward to memorialize his life, legacy, and screen presence outside of the go-to example of "Friends." Although he would never find another starring role quite like the one he enjoyed on the show that made his name and turned him into one of the most famous popular figures around the globe, Perry went on to make an undeniable impact wherever his journey took him until the end.

The CW systematically stripped away its superhero dramas and teen-centric soaps during the 2022-23 television season, taking the foundation of its primetime programming slate down to the studs. Now comes the reveal of a renovation that leans heavily on niche sports, noisy unscripted series, procedural dramas and broad-skewing comedies.
The change comes a year after Texas-based Nexstar Media Group acquired a majority stake in The CW from its founders, CBS and Warner Bros. (the “C” and “W” in “CW”). A new owner inevitably brings new priorities and a new regime, and The CW’s freshly appointed leadership team of president Dennis Miller and entertainment president Brad Schwartz have a nail-biter of a season ahead. There’s little doubt that The CW will see a ratings drop, at least early on, as it implements a radical shift in content strategy.

Like many popular comedic actors of the day, Adam Sandler got his start on “Saturday Night Live” first as a writer and then as a cast member. He was spotted by weekend update anchor Dennis Miller doing stand-up comedy and Miller recommended him for the show. Sandler was a big success on the show, particularly doing song parodies during the Weekend Update segments. Sandler left the show in 1995 after only five years on the program. Years later when Conan O’Brien was having his own problems with NBC, Sandler admitted to O’Brien that he was actually fired from “SNL” and didn’t leave voluntarily as had been assumed.
Sandler started off doing comedy films after that but has evolved into doing dramatic work at times. While he has a pretty strong track record as a box office draw, he has also often been the target of poor reviews from critics...

The CW’s “Nancy Drew” aired its final episode on Wednesday, following last year’s news that Season 4 of the detective series would be its last. At the time, showrunners Noga Landau and Melinda Hsu Taylor said they were “full of gratitude, knowing that we were able to bring this chapter to a close with intentionality,” but executive producer Larry Teng is telling a different story.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, the EP said The CW did not tell the “Nancy Drew” team that the network planned to cancel the show until a “random call 3/4 into our season.” According to Teng, “Nancy Drew” star Kennedy McMann “was in line to shoot ‘The Good Lawyer,'” so her agent called CBS Studios (a production company behind “Nancy Drew”) to ask about scheduling in regards to “Nancy Drew” Season 5. CBS then apparently made a call to The CW “right around the...

The CW continues to lose money, with a net loss of $78 million in the second quarter, however its finances are improving, as executives at Nexstar appear increasingly confident in their strategy to turn the network around.
In Nexstar’s Q2 earnings report, the local TV station giant spent some time discussing The CW, which it acquired from Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount last year for essentially nothing. The plan, according to Nexstar CEO Perry Sook, is to take a “Moneyball” approach to content (an analytics-based concept popularized by the Michael Lewis book).
That means fewer big-budget superhero shows, more reality programming, and also sports (CW programming chief Brad Schwartz outlined the strategy on last week’s TV’s Top 5 podcast). Though, notably, The CW has been extremely opportunistic in the sports space, first securing Liv Golf rights (in what is believed to be a rev-share agreement), and then Acc college...

Moving forward, Nexstar is eyeing what chairman and CEO Perry A. Sook is referring to as “‘Moneyball’-inspired investments” when it comes to The CW.
In its second quarter, The CW saw a loss of $78 million. That’s an improvement of the $83 million loss the network reported during the first quarter of 2023.
During the company’s second quarter earnings call, Sook addressed The CW’s programming pivot away from the costly young adult originals the network used to be known for and toward a broader array of shows and live sports.
“It’s got to be something where we can own the back end. We can participate financially in the back end and not just be a barker channel for content that ultimately ends up on Netflix. That influences the programming that we go after, the programming we put on the air, the price we pay for it,” Sook said.

Nexstar Media Group missed Wall Street’s earnings expectations for its second quarter on Tuesday after reporting net income of $75 million, or diluted earnings of approximately $2.64 per share, on revenue of $1.24 billion. Analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research were expecting earnings of $2.88 per share on revenue of $1.25 billion.
Operating income stood at $179 million. The second quarter also brought about a consolidated adjusted Ebitda of $331 million and ended with attributable free cash flow of $100 million. That adjusted Ebitda included losses related to The CW Network as well as the impact of lessened political advertising revenue and increased news expenses related to NewsNation’s programming expansion.
If one were to exclude The CW — a network that Nexstar has been frank about its unprofitability — second quarter adjusted Ebitda would be $405 million.

Dennis Miller, who took the helm of The CW after Nexstar Media Group bought majority control of it last fall, has been re-upped as president of the broadcast network through 2027.
With a background in media and venture capital, Miller has steered The CW through a period of transformation and financial overhaul. Nexstar has pledged to make the network profitable by 2025, in large part by ditching the pricey scripted dramas favored by previous joint venture partners Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery (each of which still has 12.5% of the network). The CW has also boosted its unscripted programming and has gotten into live sports with deals to broadcast Acc football and basketball as well as Liv Golf. By 2025, plans call for the network to carry more than 400 hours of sports programming over 48 weekends each year.
The CW acquisition involved no up-front payments, with Nexstar instead agreeing to absorb the network’s considerable debt load.

When Nexstar acquired a 75% stake in The CW in August 2022, very few onlookers foresaw the amount of live sports that the network would start pursuing. But that’s exactly what the channel has done, as it has struck agreements with the controversial Liv Golf league, and more recently the Atlantic Coast Conference (Acc) in a deal that will see college football and basketball games head to The CW.
The expansion into live sports is continuing at an impressive rate for The CW, as this week NASCAR has announced that the channel will become the exclusive home of its Xfinity Series from beginning in 2025 and running until the end of the 2031 season. The Xfinity Series is one level below NASCAR’s top level of competition — the Cup Series — and this is the first time in its history that it will be available on a free, over-the-air broadcast network.

With guest-host Tom Shillue sitting in as “host,” Gutfeld fielded questions about his book, including why the polarizing political punster-poet chose to tackle a nightly show when he was already in a cushy job as a panelist on Fox’s daily ratings champ “The Five.”
“Now, do you want to talk about the fact that you were ambivalent or unsure about going nightly?” Shillue asked.
“Yes. I didn’t want to do it because I have a target on my back and I hate...

Nexstar is looking to bolster its lineup of CW affiliates, flipping three of its local TV stations in major markets.
The local TV giant says that Wphl in Philadelphia, Kron in San Francisco, and Wtta in Tampa will become affiliates of The CW beginning in September. All three are owned by Nexstar, and currently MyNetworkTV stations.
When the networks flip to The CW, they will begin carrying the Nexstar-owned network’s entertainment lineup, as well as its Liv Golf sports programming. As is typical in these cases, the local news programming and syndicated fare will likely remain largely the same.
“These stations in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Tampa have deep relationships with their viewers, advertisers, and the communities they serve; they are a great addition to the CW family and will help us better shape the future of the network,” CW president Dennis Miller said in a statement.
