Geralt of Rivia’s story has an end date on Netflix.
On Thursday, the streaming service renewed The Witcher for Season 5, but revealed that it would be the last season.
The shocking announcement comes as production is finally getting underway on The Witcher Season 4 following countless setbacks.
“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate Season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” showrunner Lauren Hissrich shared in a statement.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
Saying goodbye to the hit fantasy drama will be tough, but at least we have two seasons that will help soften the blow.

Netflix has officially begun production of The Witcher Season 4 and shared a sneak peek of the cast together from the recent table read. The streaming service has also given the green light to Season 5 of The Witcher, which will film back-to-back with Season 4 and will be the final chapter in Geralt’s story.
Seasons 4 and 5 will adapt the remaining Sapkowski books, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake, promising an epic and satisfying conclusion to Netflix’s hit fantasy drama.
After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the fourth season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other.
If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire and finding one another again.

In the last episode of The Witcher season 3, part two, Geralt managed to survive the attack from Vilgefortz despite being badly injured. Yennefer tried to comfort Tissia, who was deeply traumatized by her lover’s betrayal. Meanwhile, after a massive explosion in Tor Lara, Ciri found herself in the dangerous desert of Korath. The place was full of monstrous creatures and chaotic magic, making every step she took perilous. During her journey, she encountered Falka, her ancestor, who encouraged her to embrace the magic of chaos. However, Ciri was scared of the potential consequences of using such power.

Does anyone else feel that The Witcher Season 3 Episode 8 might not be leading to the shake-up we expect when Geralt returns?
He isn't dead. He hasn't been mutilated or maimed. He literally walks off with Jaskier and Milva to continue his search for Ciri.
What are we missing here? How will the announced change of witcher be handled?
After spending over half the previous outing on Ciri's desert ordeal, this offering provides the more familiar rotating narratives as our core three are still spread out geographically.
Geralt is convalescing in Brokilon. Ciri's got herself tied up in Korath. And Yennefer's leading the rebuilding effort at Aretuza.
Of the three, Yennefer's journey spirals down the most.
The horror of finding the bodies of the novices in Vilgefortz's castle has a devastating knock-on effect on Tissaia, who is already made vulnerable by her lover's betrayal.
They make us sacrifice so much. The cost of learning magic.

Whichever way "The Witcher" (say that three times fast!) elects to send off Henry Cavill's Geralt of Rivia, Netflix's marketing team is certainly pulling out all the stops. The streamer has released a second and final trailer for season 3 volume 2 just a few days ahead of its arrival, complete with all the trimmings "Witcher" fans could ask for. There's even a line or two of dialogue that all but explicitly nods to Cavill's impending departure from the show. It's almost enough to give you a lump in your throat, in-between the clips of our treasured grouchy monster hunter dad going all stabbity-stabbity on his enemies.
"We didn't come this far just to abandon each other," Geralt growls at one point. "Then don't abandon me," Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) replies, as the trailer shows Geralt and his "dear friend" holding back tears. It's not all vulnerable admissions and earnest sentiment,...
