Eddie Izzard is one of the best stand-up comics of all time. His use of language, impressions, visual comedy and his ability to bring every joke full circle is an incredible talent.
I had the pleasure to catch Edie Izzard’s latest show at the Cardiff Motorpoint Arena on the 29th May and it was great. But how does it compare with his other shows?
Well, there is something that happens to musicians, television shows, film franchises and even stand up comics… sometimes they hit such heights that follow up shows fail to hit the high notes of earlier successes. Eddie Izzard, as brilliant as he is, has fallen into this too…and while Circle, Sexie and Stripped (the last I also watched live in 2009) were funny, they were never as good as definite Article, Glorious or Dressed To Kill. I never felt his last three shows had the classic moments of ‘cake or death?...

Two years ago the British documentarist Rex Bloomstein, best-known for his films on human rights and the Holocaust, recorded an extended interview in Rangoon with Maung Thura, the 50-year-old Burmese playwright, film-maker and satirical comedian who styles himself Zarganar and is currently serving a 35-year sentence (reduced from 55 years) for mocking the military junta. In this film Bloomstein is joined by Zarganar's young German admirer, the left-wing stand-up comic Michael Mittermeier, to pay tribute to the courageous artist and visit Burma. They're kept under surveillance by the regime and don't get nearer Zarganar than driving past his remote prison. But the movie is an introduction to a remarkable man who needs the support of the world against his vindictive oppressors. I have to say however that in translation neither Zarganar nor Mittermeier is particularly funny.

The Kids Are All Right (15)
(Lisa Cholodenko, 2010, Us) Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson. 106 mins
Double lesbian motherhood proves to be no less messed up a family set up than any other here, although it does give two great actresses meaty roles, and open up a fresh set of complications when their teenage children track down their biological father (Ruffalo). Sexual politics play a distant second to character dramedy here, and even if it gets mushy, it's a funny, observant study of real, flawed people.
Burke & Hare (15)
(John Landis, 2010, UK) Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Isla Fisher. 91 mins
The well-filmed tale of Irish bodysnatchers in Edinburgh gets a Laurel and Hardyish treatment courtesy of Pegg and Serkis, with a dash of romantic comedy and plenty of celebrity cameos amid the irreverent corpse-mongering.
Involuntary (15)
(Ruben Östlund, 2008, Swe) Villmar Björkman, Linnea Cart-Lamy, Leif Edlund. 102 mins
Overtones of Östlund's compatriot Roy Andersson in this penetrating,...

Having a blast as she made an overseas TV appearance, Katy Perry was the musical guest on the 190th "Wetten, dass ...?" show in Munich, Germany on Saturday (October 2).
Getting quite the ovation from the audience at Olympiahalle, the "Teenage Dream" darling dazzled onstage while also taking part in a few skits and a sitdown chat with host Thomas Gottschalk and fellow guest, comedian Michael Mittermeier
The "Wetten, Dass...?" visit comes after Katy was busy the previous evening performing a concert at the "T-Home and T-Mobile Present Katy Perry" event in Budapest, Hungary.
As for what lies ahead, Miss Perry is slated for two more gigs during her European trek on October 5-6 in Warsaw and Vienna, respectively.

Berlin -- Til Schweiger's romantic comedy hit "Rabbit Without Ears" has won the best film prize while the Simon Pegg starrer "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" took home the trophy for best international comedy at the 2008 German Comedy Awards.
Rising star Nora Tschirner won the best actress title for her starring role in "Rabbit," as a stuck-up kindergarten teacher who falls for a sleazy gossip reporter (Schweiger).
The Comedy Awards honor both film and TV comedy, and it was established names who took home most of the evening's small screen prizes. Sitcom queen Mirja Boes won best comedienne, stand-up champ Michael Mittermeier took the best comedian award, and Michael Kessler, star of Pro7's sketch show "Switch Reloaded," took the actor nod.
For the fourth year in a row, Mario Barth took home the prize for best live act. Barth, whose stand-up focuses on the differences between men and women,...
