There was once a man named Mamoru Hosada who decided to become an anime director. After a phenomenal career at Toei, where he worked on classic episodes of "Digimon" and "Revolutionary Girl Utena," he was recruited by Studio Ghibli to direct their upcoming film "Howl's Moving Castle." Unfortunately, Hosada's project was cursed from the beginning. Much of Ghibli was already busy crafting "Spirited Away." Hosada worked hard to secure a team of animators, but he could only do so much by himself. The harder he worked to keep "Howl's Moving Castle" alive, the faster it became a time and money sink. Sooner or later, the film collapsed, and Hosada was removed from the project. In an interview with Animestyle, Hosada expressed his feelings of guilt for the animators he was forced to abandon. "I had lied to them," he said. "I had betrayed them. Now nobody would trust me again.

Studio Ghibli’s “Ocean Waves” seems like the ugly duckling in the studio’s fantastical oeuvre. It misses all the Ghibli trademarks. Instead of Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, the film was directed by the much younger Tomomi Mochizuki. Instead of the studio’s usual 18-frames-per-second, “Ocean Waves” maximizes upon 12. Instead of theatrical release, “Ocean Waves” only planned to air on TV — and ended up being Ghibli’s first, and last, foray into TV-film.
Make no mistake though: “Ocean Waves” is a must-see hidden gem of Asian animation. Here, independent student council member Yutaka Matsuno (Yoshihiko Seki) and kind-hearted, but clueless Taku Morisaki (Nobuo Tobita) have been friends since middle school. However, when the fiery, Tokyo-born Rikako Muto (Yoko Sakamoto) descends upon the sleepy town of Kochi, her presence strains the boys’ friendship. While Yutaka showers Rikako with movies and books, Taku receives all of...

Set in Japan’s traditional Edo period, “House of Five Leaves” ( Sarai-ya Goyou) is a twelve-episode anime series (written and directed by Tomomi Mochizuki) adapted from the Japanese manga of the same name, written and illustrated by Natsume Ono. Although falling under the seinen genre, it is based on the story of a rather timid ronin (wandering samurai), Akitsu Masanosuke, who is unlike our stereotypical protagonists. In spite of his deft swordsmanship, he is often fired by his employers for his shy and unimpressive personality, a quality that we usually don’t associate with the ruthless samurai clans. This is what makes this anime so special and causes it to stand out from the rest.
While Masanosuke is unemployed and frequently visits the Employment Office out of desperation to seek a job as a bodyguard, he holds himself with a certain pride and refuses to take up...

The most modest and least celebrated of the films produced by Japan’s peerless Studio Ghibli, “Ocean Waves” was conceived as an opportunity for the company’s younger talent to make something on the cheap. In spite of those simple aspirations, the project came in late and over budget, eventually airing on local television in 1993 and failing to make much of a splash. Since then, the sentimental high school drama has existed just outside the Ghibli legend, more of a curiosity than part of the canon, unseen to all but the studio’s most dedicated completists.
The first Ghibli film that wasn’t directed by either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, “Ocean Waves” is glaringly absent the former’s flair for fantasy or the latter’s gift for minimalist heartbreak. In both scale and subject, it cleaves closer to the delicate wistfulness of a Haruki Murakami novel — one of his earlier,...

For a studio that’s effectively shut down, Studio Ghibli seems pretty busy. A handful of animators have branched out and formed their own studio, with a new movie coming next year, and now a title from the company which has mostly gone unseen on our shores is finally arriving.
Given a new, 4K restoration, Tomomi Mochizuki‘s “Ocean Waves” was originally made for Japanese television, but now it’s landing on the big screen in the United States courtesy of the fine folks at Gkids, and it looks like another sensitive work from Studio Ghibli that fans are going to fall in love with.

It's always a good time to watch a Studio Ghibli movie. GKids is planning a very limited Us release of a 1993 film that never actually was released in the Us back then. It's titled Ocean Waves, and is about a love triangle between two good friends who both fall hard for a new girl who transfers to their high school from Tokyo. It was actually made as a TV anime but still plays a 72-minute feature, which is being released on Blu-ray following the theatrical screenings. Directed by Tomomi Mochizuki, Ocean Waves is set in the city of Kōchi, on the Japanese island of Shikoku. It doesn't exactly have the same feel as a Miyazaki movie, but it does look just as gorgeous as anything else Ghibli has made, built upon the honest emotions of growing up. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ poster) for Tomomi Mochizuki's Ocean Waves,...

In 1993, Studio Ghibli made an animated film called Ocean Waves, which has also gone by the title I Can Hear the Sea. The film was never officially released in the U.S., but GKids is about to change that. They've restored in the film in 4K and will be giving it a limited release in the U.S. later this month.
I've actually never seen this film, so I'm kind of excited about the opportunity to see a Studio Ghibli film for the first time. The story center on two friends who both end up falling for the same girl who is new to their high school. Here's a brief synopsis:
As a young man returns home after his first year away at college he recalls his senior year of high school and the iron-willed, big city girl that turned his world upside down.

A Studio Ghibli gem is finally making its way to Us theaters this month. Rarely seen outside of Japan, “Ocean Waves” is an animated film that tells the story of adolescent and teenage isolation.
Adapted from Saeko Himuro’s novel of the same name, the feature was originally made in 1993 for Japanese television, and now Gkids will distribute the movie to select theaters in a 4k restoration.
The story follows two best friends, Taku and Yutaka, who head back to school to what they believe will be another uneventful year. Per the synopsis, “Their friendship is tested by the arrival of Rikako, a beautiful new transfer student from Tokyo whose attitude vacillates wildly from flirty and flippant to melancholic. When Taku joins Rikako on a trip to Tokyo, the school erupts with rumors, and the three friends are forced to come to terms with their changing relationships.”

Hayao Miyazaki is returning to feature-length animated filmmaking and the stellar animation The Red Turtle will get a wider release early next year, but it’s not the only treat from Studio Ghibli that we’ll be receiving soon. After last year kicked off with a U.S. release of Only Yesterday, an unearthed and restored classic from the studio, another widely unseen gem (at least here) will be making its way to theaters.
Tomomi Mochizuki‘s 1993 drama Ocean Waves has been given a new 4K restoration and it’ll be arriving in theaters at the end of the month. Marking the first time a Studio Ghibli film was directed by someone other than studio founders Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, the adaptation of Saeko Himuro‘s book follows friends who relationship is tested when a new woman enters their lives.

Anyone who loves classic hand drawn animation surely is familiar with the Japanese giant, Studio Ghibli, and the fat and fluffy Totoro creature that accompanies the title. Hell, at the very least, most Americans have been introduced to Totoro from his cameo appearance in the latest iteration of Toy Story. Since the mid 80s, the Japanese animation studio has been pumping out world renowned classics that have managed to bundle humane wonder with traditional Japanese culture while presenting them with universal appeal to both adults and children alike. With the genius of writers/directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata behind the original stories, and an instantly recognizable style that skews the traditional Japanese anime look, Studio Ghibli has cemented itself as the leader in keeping the intimate art of hand drawn animation alive. Twenty-seven years after the success of Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and the subsequent foundation of Studio Ghibli,...
