Exclusive: All Creatures Great and Small scribe Jamie Crichton is taking on ITV’s latest campaigning drama, a series about the fight to repeal the notorious double jeopardy law starring Sheridan Smith.
Details about the drama first started emerging last night and we can reveal it will be titled I Fought the Law and is produced by Mary & George indie Hera Pictures.
Based on Ann Ming’s book For the Love of Julie, the series tells the heart-breaking story of Ming’s 15-year-long battle for her daughter Julie’s murderer to face justice. Ming’s daughter was found in the bathroom of her house in 1990, 80 days after she had disappeared, and the man who killed her was twice acquitted following mistrials before eventually admitting to the murder. The archaic double jeopardy law meant he couldn’t be tried twice for the same crime and it is this law that Ming and her family successfully overturned.

The director of Mr Bates vs the Post Office has urged the creation of a “mechanism” for British broadcasters to continue to tell campaigning stories as he communicates a desire for his smash ITV drama not to become a “unicorn.”
Since Mr Bates aired in January, James Strong said he has been contacted by “loads and loads of people asking for help, from small stories to [scandals about] corporate structures.”
“I think it’s about setting up a mechanism so that all these issues can be represented,” he told the Creative Cities Convention. “[People affected] can go to a broadcaster and say, ‘We’ve got this idea, can we make a drama?’.”
The BAFTA nominee, whose past credits include Vigil and Doctor Who, said Mr Bates “shouldn’t be a unicorn” and urged British broadcasters to support “factual stories.”

Gillian Anderson is once again playing a character with British royal family ties in Netflix’s Scoop. (She played Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown.) This time, she portrays Emily Maitlis, the journalist who interviewed Prince Andrew in 2019 about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Ahead, why Anderson thought the role “seemed like a really bad idea” and turned it down. Plus, who changed her mind.
Anderson didn’t want to play Emily Maitlis for 2 reasons: she’s ‘living’ and they call the same neighborhood home
During a Scoop screening and Q&a in New York City, New York, on April 3, 2024, Anderson revealed why she turned down the role of Maitlis.
“I said no initially,” she said (via People). “It felt [like] Emily Maitlis is known very well in the U.K. She’s been on our screens and in our ears and podcasts for a long time,...

Plot: An insider account of how the women of “Newsnight” secured Prince Andrew’s infamous 2019 interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Review: Sometimes, pursuing a news story is as fascinating as the story itself. From All The President’s Men to Spotlight, countless films have looked at the reporters and journalists who have investigated the most significant revelations of all time and have garnered awards for the recreation of the tireless journey. The distance between the event and the dramatization often reminds audiences of the stakes at play, but Scoop chronicles a news story that occurred just six years ago. Led by Billie Piper as the producer who secured the shocking interview alongside Gillian Anderson, Romola Garai, Keeley Hawes, and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, Scoop has some exciting stories from an insider’s point of view. Still, it fails to generate anything we did not already get from the broadcast itself.

Scoop is a well-made but hard-to-watch film, believe me that’s a good thing. The Netflix film does everything right from its pacing to its performances giving us an insight into the subject and people behind one of the most scandalous things ever to come out of the British Royal family.
Directed by Philip Martin, Scoop sheds some light on what went on behind the scenes of Prince Andrew‘s News Night interview with Emily Maitlis which was later described as less a car crash than “a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion.” Prince Andrew was a close friend of Jeffrey Epstein and was also accused of molesting an underage girl, but he is still walking freely.

Gillian Anderson had trouble making up her mind about her role in Scoop.
The 55-year-old actress plays British journalist Emily Maitlis in the Netflix film about Prince Andrew‘s infamous 2019 BBC interview, in which he was questioned about his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Gillian recently revealed that she first rejected the part.

In the final minutes of Netflix’s Scoop, a fictionalised behind-the-scenes account of Newsnight’s infamous Prince Andrew interview, Billie Piper’s character Sam buys a kebab. Two lamb shawarmas – her usual, says the vendor, who gestures at the TV news and asks if she’s seen all this business with the prince? Boy, he’d love to have been in the room when that interview was filmed. Sam McAlister looks wistfully at the screen with the beginning of a smile on her face. “Yeah I did. I saw it,” she tells him, and then turns and leaves.
So humble. So real. So unmotivated by personal glory. Sam McAlister could have told the kebab shop man that she very much was in the room when that interview was filmed, and that as the guest booker on Newsnight, without her it might never even have happened. She doesn’t. The former...

“An hour of television can change everything,” Billie Piper says in the newly released trailer for Scoop, the upcoming film based on the true events leading up to Prince Andrew’s explosive 2019 BBC Newsnight interview. The eyes of Britain were on journalist Emily Maitlis (played here by Gillian Anderson) as she grilled the royal (Rufus Sewell) about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The fallout was immediate, as Prince Andrew announced that he was stepping back from his public duties in the days following the broadcast.
But how did a son of the Queen of England find himself in the hot seat? In Scoop, directed by Emmy and BAFTA winner Philip Martin (The Crown), Piper plays Sam McAlister, the interview booker for the prestigious current affairs show who managed to secure what was thought to be an ungettable get. Based on McAlister’s own account and adapted by Peter Moffat and...

A bizarre sense of déjà vu accompanies Netflix's Scoop, a behind-the-scenes look at Prince Andrew's "car crash" interview about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Director Philip Martin and writer Peter Moffat painstakingly recreate the infamous BBC Newsnight interview, loading up Rufus Sewell with prosthetics to make him look more like the Prince and nudging Gillian Anderson, as journalist Emily Maitlis, toward the right mix of shock and delight that Andrew has made her job so easy.
As reproductions go, the tense sit-down between Andrew and Emily — the result of months of negotiation between talent booker Sam McAlister (Billie Piper) and the Duke of York's private secretary Amanda Thirsk (Keeley Hawes) — remains incredibly faithful to the 2019 broadcast, which led to Andrew's downfall and withdrawal from public duties.

Scoop is a 2024 Netflix movie starring Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper, Rufus Sewell and Keeley Hawes. It is directed by Philip Martin and written by Peter Moffat.
Are you a fan of journalism? The film might not be an exact representation, it could all be a little romanticized, and perhaps more Hollywood than realistic. However, if you’re fascinated by the world of journalism, “Scoop” knows how to maintain a great cinematic pace and weave a story that captivates and thrills.
Yes, it’s idealized, but it’s also passionate and well-told.
Scoop Plot
Jeffrey Epstein was accused in New York of child prostitution. Epstein committed suicide in prison, but his story didn’t end there. Across the Atlantic, the scandal touched the British Crown and one its highest representatives: Prince Andrew.

Scoop is a dramatized feature about the BBC’s Newsnight team scoring a sensationally revealing 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with millionaire sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. For a film about a journalistic exclusive, it has the most generic title possible. There are already at least four other movies out there called Scoop, including a rubbishy 2006 Woody Allen film and a 1987 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s peerless 1938 satirical novel, a twofer satire of both the press and the British aristocracy.
Sadly, this latest Scoop has none of Waugh’s acid wit or alkaline intelligence. Although serviceable as a retread of the events that led up to the royal interview conducted by Newsnight anchor Emily Maitlis (impersonated here by Gillian Anderson), an interview recreated for big chunks of the running time, it doesn’t significantly deepen or enrich our understanding of the personalities involved — let alone journalism, privilege, sexual exploitation or the price of fish.

Jeffrey Epstein is back in the news with the release of the sex trafficker’s private files earlier this year, so it’s good timing that Netflix is releasing its thriller on the exposé. Unfortunately, the would-be prestige drama Scoop feels like all bark and no bite, lacking the insight or audacity to make it a meaningful entry to the genre.
Scoop tells the story of the BBC journalists who obtained the Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Although this story is undeniably interesting, the film’s fundamental flaw is treating it as a nail-biting thriller when the situation’s results are so well-known. Had the movie taken a more satirical, perhaps even farcical, approach, it would have been far more compelling.
The film also struggles to straddle the line between technical and accessible. At some points, it seems like the filmmakers...

It makes sense that Netflix leapt at the chance to adapt Sam McAllister’s “Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews,” as the story that screenwriter Peter Moffat has pulled from it feels like nothing so much as an episode from season eight or nine of “The Crown” — the most compelling thing about this film might be the case it makes in support of the streamer’s decision to end that series after season six.
A thin but propulsive journalistic thriller about the making of the November 2019 “Newsnight” segment in which Prince Andrew self-immolated on national television while being grilled about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, “Scoop” fleetly dramatizes how a small team at the BBC’s most prestigious current affairs program convinced the Duke of York to hoist himself on the petard of his own alleged sex crimes. A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

Three years after winning an Emmy for portraying Margaret Thatcher, Gillian Anderson returns to British politics as a member of the fourth estate in “Scoop.” The Netflix film stars the actress as the “Newsnight” journalist Emily Maitlis, who sat down for a squirm-inducing interview with Prince Andrew, Duke of York, portrayed by a physically transformed Rufus Sewell. The actor has of late been playing an American politician on the streamer’s “The Diplomat.” Watch the full “Scoop” trailer below.

Scripted formats were placed front and center of BBC Studios’ panel at Series Mania, as the Doctor Who seller confirmed it is making up to three more versions of Ghosts and has bought Spain’s Brutal Media.
One of the hit BBC show’s creators, Simon Farnaby, recently told a podcast the show – which has achieved smash ratings on CBS in the U.S. – is being remade in Germany and Spain.
Matt Forde, who runs BBC Studios Global Entertainment, confirmed “there are two or three other versions in the works.”
“We love those shows and love the UK versions,” said Forde. “We are finding ways into these worlds in local creative communities.” Ghosts was recently renewed for a fourth CBS season, although the BBC version has ended.
Deadline revealed recently that BBC Studios’ deal with Lionsgate, which spawned the likes of Ghosts, had elapsed, but Forde was bullish about the scripted formats game.

Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell have revealed they both said “absolutely not” when first asked to play Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew in Netflix feature Scoop.
Speaking via video link at the See What’s Next Netflix event in London, Sex Education star Anderson said she thought she would “undoubtedly fail” if she took on the role of the BBC interviewer, who achieved worldwide acclaim for the interview that preceded the downfall of the prince.
“The opportunity to play her was a privilege and was daunting,” added Anderson. “She is a formidable character and journalist, and an incredibly impressive woman. So when first asked to play her I said, ‘Absolutely not, it’s too hard, she’s too amazing and everyone knows her too well and I will undoubtedly fail’.”
Sewell, meanwhile, said he didn’t accept the role until he had “worked on it on my own for a little while.

Corestar Media has acquired the dramatic rights to Mavis Eccleston’s story, who took the agonizing decision to end her life alongside husband of six decades Dennis, who was in terrible pain from cancer.
The feature, Goodnight Darling, will follow how the 79-year-old Mavis was arrested and tried for murder, only to be unanimously found not guilty, and then began a campaign with her family to change the law to allow people to take the choice of assisted dying.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel author Deborah Moggach, whose mother served time in prison in an assisted dying case, has written a script. The story could be made as a film or a TV series, said a rep for UK drama indie Corestar.

The bosses of Doctor Who co-producer Bad Wolf and Crown maker Left Bank both told Deadline they have started nurturing a development pot for shows that cost less to make than their previous fare. Forgive us if we occasionally sound surprised or bemused in our coverage of the Suits streaming phenomenon. It’s just that an innocuous 2010s cable series suddenly becoming a monster hit on streaming is a fairly perplexing experience.
Streaming services like Netflix and Peacock, both of which host multiple seasons of Suits, spend untold millions trying to produce their own original hits only for a USA Network series from years ago to blow them all out of the water. People quite simply can’t get enough of the legal machinations of Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), Michael Ross (Patrick J. Adams), and the rest of the personnel a their constantly-changing law firm.
Why, exactly, has Suits in particular become such a hit? We’ll leave that one for the sociologists. But the show’s success this summer has made one undeniable fact of TV life clear: legal dramas are great! For decades,...

With The CW’s fall primetime schedule, which was unveiled on Thursday morning during upfronts, we’re getting a true look at what the Nexstar era of The CW entails. Say goodbye to DC superheroes and cute fashion dramas and hello to half-hour comedies about raising kids.

The CW’s latest acquisition comes from an unlikely place: AMC.
The broadcast network has picked up both seasons of the drama series 61st Street from AMC. The legal thriller stars Courtney B. Vance as an attorney defending a high school athlete (Tosin Cole) who get swept up in Chicago’s corrupt criminal justice system.
AMC picked up the series with a two-season order and aired the first installment in the spring of 2022. Despite season two already being finished, however, AMC scrapped the conclusion — part of a wave of cost-cutting un-renewals at several outlets in late 2022 and early 2023. The first season is set to air in the fall on The CW, with the unseen season two set for 2024.
“There was a lot of love and hard work that went into making 61st Street,” Vance said in a statement. “I’m thrilled that The CW has enthusiastically given all 16 episodes of 61st Street a network home.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of Your Honor Season 2.
Bryan Cranston clarified the comments he made on Dax Shepard’s recent Armchair Expert podcast ruling out a third season for Your Honor, saying they might have been misconstrued. The actor told Deadline’s Lynette Rice at Contenders TV Sunday that Showtime is interested in a third season, but he might not appear in it.
“My comment was I’m not sure that there could be or there is,” Cranston said. “There is some discussion. Showtime has indicated there is interest and we’re very proud to know that every episode in Season 2 increased in the audience from the previous week. If it happens, fantastic but it’d have to be some great reason to keep expanding in this world and to find out where the allegiances are. I’d be very interested in producing that. I don’t know...

The Hindi adaptation of UK mini-series The Night Manager, based on the John Le Carre novel, is shaping up to be one of the most highly-anticipated shows in a busy Indian web series season. Produced by The Ink Factory and Banijay Asia for Disney+ Hotstar, the show is set to start streaming on February 17.
Sandeep Modi, who is on board as director and showrunner of the Hindi version, with Priyanka Ghosh as co-director, has creatively helmed the project and tell Deadline of an ambition is to shoot a second season in India. “I keep joking with Simon [Cornwell, Le Carre’s son and co-ceo of The Ink Factory] that we’ll make season two before you do and you can use that for the English version,” says Modi.
The first adaptation of the novel, for BBC and AMC back in 2016, was a ratings hit and rumors of a second run have continued ever since without an official announcement. Le Carre passed...

Netflix has announced the star-studded casting for a dramatisation of Prince Andrew’s infamous Newsnight interview, including Rufus Sewell as the disgraced royal.
Prince Andrew spoke to Emily Maitlis on the primetime BBC programme in 2019 amid concerns about his reported connection to sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein.
In the conversation, Andrew denied having any sort of relationship with Virginia Guiffre, who has alleged that Epstein forced her to have sex with the prince in 2001 when she was 17. Andrew claimed he was at a Pizza Express restaurant in Woking on the evening in question.
Andrew also denied Guiffre’s claims that he was sweating while they danced at a club by claiming that, at the time, he’d temporarily lost the ability to sweat after an “adrenaline overdose” during the Falklands war.
The interview was widely branded a “disaster”. Since then, Andrew has kept a considerably lower profile and was stripped of...
