In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Hope and Fear", a visiting alien named Arturis (Ray Wise) helpfully translates some coded information that the U.S.S. Voyager had recently discovered on an abandoned communications network. Arturis unexpectedly decodes the location of a nearby empty Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Dauntless, an experimental craft that is equipped with a new kind of warp "slipstream" technology. The Dauntless, unbeknownst to the Voyager crew, was sent specifically out to the Delta Quadrant to bring the Voyager crew back to Earth, and Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is elated.
It will eventually be revealed, of course, that the Dauntless is an elaborate booby trap constructed by Arturis, who had been secretly hellbent on revenge. His species had recently been assimilated by the Borg, and he blamed Janeway for his planet's destruction. About a year earlier, Janeway had allied with the Borg to pass...

Inspector Spacetime is a self-paradoxical anomaly, which makes perfect sense. It’s only existed for a few months, but has also apparently been on television for nearly fifty years. Actor Travis Richey has played him for all of that time, for a grand total of less than two minutes of footage, and yet 11 actors have played the role, including Stephen Fry and Christopher Lee. As Travis explains it, “The best part is, Nothing is canon, and Everything is canon”.
After the character made its debut as a brief Doctor Who parody on NBC’s Community, the Internet got right to work fleshing out his history and adventures. A Tumblr feed was quickly created to serve as the main repository of the work, and photos from past episodes were quickly “discovered” and shared.

Perhaps realizing that TV audiences have an appetite for serialized and sweeping period epics (thanks, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Spartacus”), Sony Pictures TV have attached former “Battletar Galactica” head honcho Ron Moore and his luscious locks to adapt the series of “Outlander” novels by writer Diana Gabaldon for them. The books are apparently big-time popular in its native Scotland, with cottage industries like guided tours to locations mentioned in the books for tourists and fans in existence. There have been seven books in the series so far, the first one written almost 20 years ago. So what’s it all about? Glad you asked. The year is 1945. Claire Randall is traveling with her husband when she touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is hurled back in time to a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in...

A bunch of updates today, most of which were supposed to go up over the weekend:
There is a new BSG site in town: Battlestar Galactica Filming Locations. It's a pretty thorough guide to all the places seen in the show's four seasons and two films, and very handy for anyone planning a trip to Vancouver, along with Visit Caprica. Check it out at BattlestarLocations.com.
On TV tonight: Richard Harmon tweets that his episode of Clue airs tonight. That's 8 pm Et on the Hub TV Network. You can watch the series trailer on YouTube.
Yesterday's episode of Glee, "Mash Off," was directed by Eric Stoltz. Fox has released a couple of new behind-the-scenes clips today (embedded & linked below).
Shoot Online reported earlier this week that Eric has joined the production and design studio The Department of The 4th Dimension full time and has at least one project in development.

Exclusive: ABC, which has new fairytale-themed series Once Upon a Time slated to launch next month, has bought another drama with magical elements. The project, from Kings creator Michael Green, has received a put pilot commitment. It centers on a female cop who, after pursuing a seemingly unsolvable case, discovers a magical world that exists within New York City. 20th Century Fox TV is producing through a script deal Green signed there last season, with Green and his manager, 3 Arts’ Erwin Stoff, executive producing. Heroes alum Green had the idea for the project last year, but after seeing two other projects with similar premises sell, including Ron Moore’s 17th Precinct to NBC, he and 20th decided to shelve his and roll his deal to this year as Green also was busy on the feature side. Then in January, Green was asked to rewrite the script for the ABC/ABC Studios horror thriller The River.

With less than one month to go until Universal releases The Thing, their marketing is finally starting to increase. Today we were given a redband trailer for the movie which shows off a lot more of the thing we really want to see, namely, The Thing.
October 14 is delivery day for the prequel. I've read the draft that came after Ron Moore turned in the first draft and...I actually came away interested in seeing the movie. John Carpenter's original 1982 movie is one of the best monster movies every made, and while I've always wanted to see a continuation of the story, I was also fearful that whatever Thing idea that came after the '82 movie would be inferior.
While this redband trailer doesn't wash away all of my worries, it does whet my interest more. Why? Because those new, brief looks at the shapechanging, infected humans as the...

It’s been six years since Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled, marking the first time since Star Trek: The Next Generation’s premiere in 1987 that there wasn’t a television program set in that universe. Shortly after its cancellation, X-Men director Bryan Singer actually set out to pitch a new series to executives, but scrapped plans when J.J. Abrams was hired on for a new feature film. And Trek writer Roberto Orci has claimed via Twitter that there have been talks – if nothing else – of a possible animated series, much like Star Wars: The Clone Wars (but hopefully, unlike Star Trek: The Animated Series, which ran from 1973-74).
But Trekkers around the world can take solice in the fact that David Foster of 1947 Entertainment is closer than anyone else has been in bringing Starfleet back to living rooms. Foster began working on the idea with the late Kevin Severson,...

With the massive critical and commercial success of J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot in 2009, the once ubiquitous franchise has been on everyone's mind again in recent years. And in the wake of a failed Bryan Singer pitch and a still-maybe-possible animated series, 1947 Entertainment's David Foster is speaking out about his vision for an all-new "Star Trek."
Thanks to Slashfilm for picking up on an interview with Foster originally conducted by Trek Web. In the piece, the owner of 1947 Entertainment talks about a desire to get back to "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's original vision of a "positive view of the future," while also pointing to Joss Whedon, Ron Moore, Manny Coto and J. Michael Straczynski as his inspirations.
Foster appears extremely confident about his pitch, which would fit in with the established canon of the television series, including both "Voyager" and "Star Trek: Enterprise," as opposed to tying...

“If evil wore the face of a hero, would you recognize it? If freedom came in the likeness of your oppressors, would you accept it? If you were your own enemy, who would be victorious? ” That is the teaser for the proposed Star Trek series by David Foster of 1947 Entertainment. Sound pretty interesting right? Well, the TV series reboot is something we have heard before.
Back in March of 2009 Pushing Daises creator Bryan Fuller threw his hat in the ring as the latest person to want to bring back Star Trek on TV. Before him it was Brian Singer and even William Shatner himself. CBS and Paramount never budged. Nothing has come out about Fuller’s interest since that point. The only thing that has happened Trek-wise since that report was that Jj Abrams’ film was a major box office success. So is the idea of a small screen series was even in the cards.

These days I find myself getting my Star Trek fix by re-watching the old series. I'm currently in the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but I would love to see a new Star Trek series hit the small screen. J.J. Abrams did a great job rebooting the franchise for film, why can it get awesome new series as well? The Series dosen't have to be in line with what Abrams has done, it can be completely different. I don't care as long as it's an engaging show. As we've discussed before Bryan Singer tried to get a series off the ground, and there's still very early discussions going on about a new Star Trek animated series. But this series that David Foster is working on could be what fans have been waiting for.
Foster has been working on a new pitch since 2006 under the code name S.

[1] When Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled in 2005, it marked the end of an era: the franchise had had at least one ongoing series on the air since Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted in 1987. That hasn't dampened the enthusiasm of Trek enthusiasts any, though, and J.J. Abrams' hit 2009 film introduced the franchise to a whole new group of fans. Might it be time for a new Star Trek series? David Foster of 1947 Entertainment thinks so. He's not the only one -- we've already told you about a failed Bryan Singer Star Trek pitch [2] and a very, very tentative animated Star Trek idea [3] -- but in contrast to the other two, Foster's project sounds like it may actually get off the ground. In a recent interview, Foster spoke a little bit about the premise of his new show, the development process, and reaching back to Gene Roddenberry's original vision.

Hello friends, and welcome to Cycle Three of 6 Things W/Da7e! Specifically, I’m going to be looking at Star Trek: The Next Generation, which recently had it’s entire run made available to me on Netflix Watch Instantly. Tng, as I’ll refer to it from here on out, was the second Gene Roddenberry Trek Series and arguably the most successful incarnation of Roddenberry’s Utopian society trekking into the stars. CNN has a really great article about Ron Moore this week which is mainly about 17th Precinct, but pretty much covers most of his career. Here are a couple of quotes from David Eick and Jane Espenson:
"Ron is the scariest writer I know" his former producing partner recalls.
"I'm not sure there's anything he can't do remarkably well. Even within the context of 'Battlestar,' there was such a wild panoply of styles and emotions -- action, tragedy, melodrama, comedy, philosophy, even music -- all of which I watched him nail."

Who is the auteur of a production, the individual whose style and sensibility most shapes it? When it comes to film, the matter, for most people, was long ago settled by the journos-turned-filmmakers at Cahiers du Cinema over in France and critic Andrew Sarris back here in the states: the director. But what is the answer to that same question when it applies to the television? Because the medium inherently requires a much longer commitment from those who work in it, I think it’s even more of a relevant and interesting query, and I believe that I know the answer.
In television, directors, writers, and even actors tend to come and go over the course of a show’s run, and rarely have the final say on creative matters. Showrunners, however, are involved before the lights turn, and they tend to be the last ones to leave the room after the lights go out.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
With Bob Greenblatt having replaced the outgoing Jeff Zucker, NBC is looking to turn around its dismal fortunes and has started by significantly cutting back on a bunch of shows which were simply not performing. This schedule takes some big risks with some new shows needing to perform if they're to survive, while two two-hour reality show blocks early in the week have certainly raised eyebrows.
There are twelve new shows in all, half of which are being held until mid-season. In the Fall, the biggest gamble is "Prime Suspect" - the U.S. remake of the iconic British police drama. With only the rarest of exceptions, American remakes of British shows have generally failed...

It seems more shows are getting the axe as NBC has decided to cancel freshmen series, The Event and Outsourced, adding those to the list of series it has already canned. Law and Order: Los Angeles was also canceled. They have also picked up a bunch more.
Wonder Woman won’t see the light of day, which we know about, but joining that in the failure to get off the ground is Ronald Moore’s 17th Precinct, A Mann’s World, Brave New World, Family Practice, I Hate That I Love You, Lovelives, Metro, My Life As An Experiment and Reconstruction.
More Confirmed New Series:
- Awake - Jason Isaacs’ first TV series, he stars as a policeman who wakes up in two alternate universes at the same time. Lone Star scribe Kyle Killen wrote the pilot.
- Playboy Club - A periodic drama surrounding women in a 60s Chicago based Playboy club.

Just yesterday, Dustin posted about NBC picking up four new shows (and a likely "Chuck" renewal, much to his consternation) and noted that the silence as to the in-development pilots for "Wonder Woman" and "The Playboy Club" was rather deafening. Well, NBC has announced three more pickups, which is good news for "The Playboy Club." The three new shows are:
The Playboy Club: Set in the 60's, this is a period drama set in a Chicago club. I'll give you one guess as to the club's name. The show stars Amber Heard and David Krumholtz, among a bunch of others. The club is apparently a place where the mob, and the rich and politicians all mingle. If done right, the show could have some potential, though I'm not holding my breath.

Well that was fun (to make fun of) while it lasted. EW has learned that NBC passed on the much buzzed-about Wonder Woman pilot from David E. Kelley and Warner Bros. TV.
Kelley had penned a script that updated the comic book classic to have Diana Prince as CEO of a major conglomerate by day and a butt-kicking Amazon (with a fleet of cool planes) by night. Kelley’s take asked for lots of heart-thumping, contemporary music, and at one point the Boston Legal writer even requested a commercial-free premiere for the pilot if it aired.
Why did the ‘ol girl fail to pass muster?...

With fairy tales all the rage in Hollywood, Peter Jackson thinking about the Temeraire books as films even as he’s labouring to bring The Hobbit’s Smaug to life, it’s not shocking that someone would launch the latest attempt to drag Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern novel series to the big screen. That someone is a combo package of writer David Hayter and producer Don Murphy.McCaffrey’s books kicked off with Dragonflight in 1968 and first launched the concept of an elite cadre of warriors taking to the skies on giant, fire-breathing reptiles to save the planet of Pern from a terrifying airborne threat.Since then, the series has spawned 21 novels (and counting), a massive, loyal fan base and more than one attempt to turn the story into a TV series or film. If Ron Moore adds one more Battlestar Galactica alumni to the cast of NBC's 17th Precinct, he may as well abandon the show's "adult Harry Potter" premise and just switch gears to a sequel series.
Then again that would probably steal thunder from the upcoming Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome, but we digress.

Well, it's not as if Smallville fanboys were particularly chomping at the bit for Lana Lang to return in time for series' end, but at least now we have a definitive answer.

Negative fan reactions to the comment prompted Kreuk to take to her Facebook in order to quell some of the backlash:
"There are many people who are just waiting for me to say something that they can hate me for. There is no personal reason why I am not watching Smallville weekly. Honestly, I never really did. I know people want to make it a drama, but there is really no drama.

Mike Huckabee is backpedaling on bashing Natalie Portman for being a single pregnant woman not yet married to the father of her child. “Natalie is an extraordinary actor, very deserving of her recent Oscar and I am glad she will marry her baby’s father [Benjamin Millepied]. “However, contrary to what the Hollywood media reported, I did not ’slam’ or ‘attack’ Natalie Portman, nor did I criticize the hardworking single mothers in our country. My comments were about the statistical reality that most single moms are very poor, under-educated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death. That’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that society often glorifies and glamorizes the idea of having children out of wedlock.” Keep talking, Huck, you’re killing your campaign the more you do, and I like that.

The cast of Ron Moore’s 17th Precinct is getting increasingly familiar. First the former Battlestar showrunner tapped Viper top gun Jamie Bamber, now Baltar himself James Callis has signed up. This is the drama project about cops patrolling a town where magic exists (let’s use that catchy pitch line one more time: “Harry Potter for grown ups”). Matt Long (The Deep End) is also cast.

This seemed touch and go for awhile, but FX has given a pilot order to its superhero drama project Powers.
The story follows two homicide detectives who investigate cases of people with extraordinary abilities, and is based on a graphic novel series (pictured, right) by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.
The project marks a bit of a departure for FX, whose dramas are typically very real-world and gritty (which isn’t to say Powers won’t look-feel that way too). It’s also one of several pilots in the TV development pipeline that are attempting to essentially recook...

['V' - 'Siege']
Things are moving along. One regular character lost his job and two recurring ones lost their lives.
The writing for 'V' remains a problem that keeps the series from living up to its potential. A sci-fi storytelling master like a Joss Whedon or a Ron Moore would never have telegraphed to such a degree the deaths that occurred. It made the actual events seem anti-climactic.
Don't get me wrong. It's understandable how the arc of the season has to be moved along, but it felt like the writers told us how the episode would end somewhere around the half-hour mark. Twist surprises work much better. See '24' for examples of this.

Stockard Channing (A Fonder Heart, The West Wing) will star in the NBC pilot for Ron Moore’s 17th Precinct. The show is described as “an ensemble cop drama” “set in a fictional town of Excelsior where magic and with supernatural elements rule over science.”
Yes, this is the same series that was described early on as an adult Harry Potter-esque show though 17th Precinct will not have anything to do with the J.K. Rowling universe aside from sharing the existence of magic.
Channing scored the role of Mira, “a fiercely intelligent former homicide detective who’s working in the robbery division of the 17th Precinct.” 17th Precinct is a Sony TV project and is in production in Vancouver.

After a rather aggressive pilot season that has spared no expense in terms of big names (Stephen Spielberg, David E. Kelly, Chelsea Handler, Debra Messing, Peter Berg, Michael Patrick King, Jack Black, etc.), NBC has more or less finished ordering pilots for 2011-12. All in all, there are 24 pilots in total (11 dramas, 13 comedies) and a lot of 'em don't sound half bad.
I know, you can hardly tell anything by titles and descriptions, as shows good on paper can be executed poorly and shows that sound ridiculous can be the funniest or most touching show around, but now that we finally have every order in, it's not a bad idea to look through what they have here, what they need, and where they're going as a network.
What they have here is a whole lot of risks (especially on the drama side), but that's what it's going to take in...

NBC is pretty much done ordering pilots for the 2011-12 prime time season and, under the new leadership of Robert Greenblatt, the network seems to be doing exactly what it needs to dig itself out from behind CBS and Fox: It needs to go big and bold. (Right now, NBC ranks third among adults 18-49 with a 2.6 rating/7 share and fourth in viewers, with 7.8 million). Though the network has picked up its share of (safe) comedies, it’s definitely taking some much-needed risks with drama development. The Wonder Woman project from David E. Kelley may come with a high-price tag,...

Both are on the rebound from relationships, one from a divorce and the other from the loss of a fiancé. Like The Office, it’s based on a British comedy.

According to Entertainment Weekly, NBC has greenlit a new fantasy cop show from Jim Kouf (Angel) and David Greenwalt (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) titled Grimm. Inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales, the series is a:
…dark but fantastical cop drama about a world in which characters inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales exist.
Kouf and Greenwalt are developing Grimm with executive producers Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner. NBC have also ordered a pilot from Ron Moore entitled 17th Precinct which sees cops working in a town where the inhabitants have magical powers.
So, if we meld Grimm and 17th Precinct together, what do you get? Upn’s Special Unit 2, which aired in 2001.

New broadcast entertainment chiefs Bob Greenblatt and Paul Lee are shaking things up this pilot season with some out-of-the-box pilot pickup choices. The latest is an order just made by Greenblatt at NBC for Grimm, described as a dark but fantastical cop drama about a world in which characters inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales exist. It comes from Angel co-creator David Greenwalt and the show's writer Jim Kouf. Greenblatt previously picked up to pilot Ron Moore's drama pilot 17th Precinct, a cop drama set in a town where magic rules over science, 1960s drama Playboy and the Broadway show-themed Smash, among others. Meanwhile, Lee has Poe, a crime procedural with Edgar Allan Poe set in 1840s Boston and 1960s drama pilot Pan Am. Grimm is being produced by Ums and Sean Hayes' Hazy Mills. Greenwalt and Kouf are executive producing with Hayes and his producing partner Todd Milliner.

Updated, 1/7: Each year, the five broadcast networks develop hundreds of scripted dramas and comedies in hopes they’ll become the next NCIS and Desperate Housewives, or the latest Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. And like every year, a great deal of them are not worth mentioning here — mostly because they involve the bland types of cops, lawyers, and doctors who you’ve already seen fighting crime or sneaking a kiss on the way to the ER.
But fascinating projects continue to pass the first smell test at the broadcast networks. The key is whether the suits take...

Jon Favreau will not be returning to direct Iron Man 3. He confirmed the news himself this afternoon via Twitter after Vulture got the internet buzzing earlier in the day. Instead of opting to complete the superhero trilogy, Favreau will helm Magic Kingdom for Disney as his follow-up to his upcoming July release, Cowboys and Aliens.
Favreau tweeted only a few minutes ago saying, "It's true, I'm directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I've had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best."
It was only a week ago Favreau was spilling the beans on what he understood Marvel's plans were for the future of the franchise telling MTV, "Kevin Feige, who's been involved with superhero movies with Marvel movies since the X-Men films, is very aware of his path and how to weave [things together], so in theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor,...
