Representation and inclusion matter. Everyone should be able to see themselves reflected in characters in film and TV and not merely in the lip service one-dimensional stories often seen, especially in relation to those with disabilities. My Eyes are Up Here, directed by Nathan Morris, is a perfect example of how to do it the right way. A classic story of waking up, bleary-eyed next to someone who you don’t know very well and the ensuing panic upon discovering a split condom. It’s a widely universal tale and treated exactly that way by Morris. The New Zealand-born director immediately connected with Aminder Virdee’s script whose authenticity and raw character-led narrative he could easily see translated visually. My Eyes Are Up Here is at its very core a familiar tale of girl meets boy, yet goes beyond that simplistic framing to reflect on the way we treat people we deem as different.

The African-American Film Critics Association (Aafca) Award ceremony honored the variety of Black experiences depicted on screen, along with Black excellence in front of and behind the camera. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Till, Emancipation and The Woman King were among the top winners at Wednesday’s event at the Beverly Wilshire hotel. The event, hosted by Roy Wood Jr., also marked Will Smith’s first return to an awards stage following the 2022 Academy Awards.
When accepting the Beacon Award for Emancipation, Smith (who arrived to a flurry of cameras and hugs) said: “Emancipation was the individual most difficult film of my entire career.… It’s really difficult to transport a modern mind to that time period. Discovery Inc. made a splashy presentation of an expanded programming lineup at its upfront Tuesday evening, touting the breadth of the lifestyle niches the cable group serves after acquiring the parent company of Food Network, Hgtv and Travel Channel for $14.6 billion earlier this year.
Discovery president-ceo David Zaslav opened the session at Alice Tully Hall by talking up the appeal of the company’s “functional content” as good counter-programming at a time when the TV world is awash in scripted programs.
“We don’t do red carpet, we don’t do Hollywood stars,” Zaslav said. “We pretty much don’t have actors.”
Discovery’s differentiator is that its core channels are built around subjects that have natural and often passionate affinity groups. Viewers of Discovery, Animal Planet, Food Network, Science Channel and such “tune in for a curated brand that gets them.”

I Am Number Four
Opens: February 18th 2011
Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, Teresa Palmer
Director: D.J. Caruso
Summary: Nine infant aliens flee their home planet to hide out on Earth. The species that destroyed their planet however has followed them and sets out to hunt them down. As the infants grow into teenagers with special powers, three of them are killed. A fourth has fallen in love and now has something to stand up and fight for.
Analysis: In premise and look, this sounds like a big budget and more action-oriented reboot of late sci-fi teen drama "Roswell". Though based on a young adult novel series, it was another title in this category that was the impetus for this adaptation - Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series. Any novels with a focus on teen romance and an other worldly touch are presently being bought up right and...
