Universal has released the first trailer for its film adaptation of the Broadway play, “Cats,” starring Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson and James Corden.
Based on the book “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot, the musical follows the Jellicle cats, a family of felines who go before the group’s leader Old Deuteronomy to see who will be selected to travel to the Heaviside layer for a new life. The original musical won six Tony awards.
However, in this iteration, things are a little different. Instead of actors dressed as cats, as many fans are familiar with in the Broadway production, director Tony Hooper opted to use motion-capture technology, meaning the cats will actually appear as singing furry felines.
The already star-studded cast is completed with another team of big names including Judi Dench (Old Deuteronomy), Rebel Wilson (Jennyanydots), Steven McRae (Skimbleshanks), Ian McKellen (Gus), Jason Derulo...

Exclusive: Mette Towley, who is best known for her choreography work with Pharrell, will be making her big screen debut in Universal/Working Title’s growing cast of Cats. She joins previously announced Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Ian McKellen and Laurie Davidson in the feature adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical.
Towley will play Jemima, the youngest kitten, a soprano, in the tribe who is known for her sweet-nature, mystical, and possibly telepathic talents. She is possibly the youngest kitten in the tribe and shows compassion for others around her. Jemima is known for continuing Grizabella’s song after the glamour puss collapses during the song “Memory”.
The studios are keeping all roles under wraps for the time being. It has been largely buzzed that Lloyd Weber will be adding songs to the big screen version scripted by Tom Hooper and Lee Hall. Hooper directs and produces,...

The Jellicle Ball will go down just in time for Christmas 2019.
Universal Pictures and Working Title will release “Cats,” the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash musical, on Dec. 20. The studio was originally going to unveil another musical sensation, “Wicked,” in that slot, but that film will be delayed and re-dated.
The story of a tribe of cats who meet each year to decide which among them will ascend to the Heaviside Layer in order to be reincarnated, is being directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper. The cast boasts a number of heavyweights, including Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, and Taylor Swift. Universal said the picture will be choreographed by movement pioneer Wayne McGregor. Casting director Lucy Bevan is currently trying to figure out which performers will play the likes of Old Deuteronomy, Macavity, Skimbleshanks, and the Rum Tum Tugger.

Universal has officially dated Working Title’s feature film version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats for December 20, 2019. Wicked, Uni’s other Broadway stage musical feature adaptation, originally occupied this date, but now the pic is being moved to accommodate its production schedule.
Despite director Tom Hooper’s attachment over the last two years, we kept hearing that Universal hadn’t greenlit a Cats movie. That obviously changed when news broke about Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson and Ian McKellan joining the cast, and the release date here underscores that the film — which has long been in development by Hollywood — is finally becoming a reality.
Cats boards what will be a very busy Christmas 2019 stretch. On December 20 next year, Disney’s Star Wars: Episode IX opens along with Fox’s Death on the Nile, followed by Sony’s Masters of the Universe on Christmas Day. The thinking, based...

Plus: Netflix gets some new talent, a post roundup and five perfect shots.
It’s been three years since director Jennifer Kent released The Babadook, and in all that time I still haven’t gotten a good night sleep, either because I was terrified said titular entity might be lurking in the shadows, or because I was wondering when and what Kent’s next project would be. A year or so ago she started dropping some hints, but as of a press release issued yesterday, we now have all the gory and glorious details.
The film is called The Nightingale — I’ve already got chills — and it sounds like we’re in for another dark thriller, albeit a little more grounded in reality. Dig the synopsis:
Set in Tasmania in 1825, The Nightingale follows a beautiful 21-year-old Irish female convict who witnesses the brutal murder of her husband and baby by her soldier master and his cronies. Unable...

Daniel Brühl, Eddie Marsan also star in project based on real events.
Principal photography has wrapped on José Padilha’s untitled thriller based on the real-life story of the 1976 Air France hijacking. Padilha’s previous work includes Narcos and Elite Squad.
The film, temporarily called Untitled Entebbe Project, stars Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Daniel Brühl (Captain America: Civil War). The cast also includes Eddie Marsan, Ben Schnetzer, Lior Ashkenazi, and Denis Ménochet.
The story is inspired by the 1976 hijacking of an Air France flight en route from Tel Aviv to Paris by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and depicts ‘Operation Entebbe’, the rescue mission carried out by Israel commandos to free the hostages. The film promises to take a nuanced look at both sides of the conflict.

Over the years, we’ve heard from our readers that one of the most important things we can do is to help you discover movies that may have slipped by mainstream audiences. And often just as important, our readers ask that we highlight voices that are in the minority in Hollywood. While we’re known for not taking ourselves very seriously, we take this part of our work seriously. Because as many studies have shown, there are some voices that aren’t as well-represented as others. Them’s the facts.

A new trailer for the film Everest was released the other day, and it looks like it might be that rare “must-see” IMAX movie. I know you’ve probably heard that line before, but this one looks like it could deliver some definite jaw-dropping moments (and maybe even a bit of drama too). Take a look for yourself.
Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.

"Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.
