Plot: John Sugar is an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
Review: Detective stories and noir films are iconic genres in film and literature. Who doesn’t love a grizzled private eye who saves the girl and beds the femme fatale? From The Maltese Falcon to Chinatown, detectives have a long and storied history on screen. With the new series Sugar, Colin Farrell adds another great character to the list. A suave, calm, and skilled investigator, John Sugar is an idealized hero straight off the silver screen. And, like any number of great cinematic detectives, he has a weakness. Having seen the full eight episodes of Sugar, audiences will love or hate John Sugar’s weakness,...

Few actors stack up against the greatness of Colin Farrell. The Irish actor rose to the top of Hollywood but struggled with alcohol and drugs. His comeback, beginning in 2008’s In Bruges, has resulted in an over fifteen-year run of greatness. As the lead of Sugar, a new series from Apple TV+, Farrell once again shines. Through empathy and kindness, he makes Sugar a uniquely human show. Yet, on occasion, the show dips into style over substance. It’s a huge win for Apple TV+ and for Noir fans everywhere.
Sugar – The Plot
The titular John Sugar (Farrell) works as a private investigator, focusing on missing persons cases. His techniques are odd, and his partner Ruby (Kirby) demands he take a break. Despite a well-earned vacation, Sugar cannot resist a call from Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), a famed Hollywood producer. However, Siegel’s granddaughter Olivia has gone missing. Despite drug abuse in her past,...

Shaquille O’Neal is returning to rap.
The NBA legend who released four hip-hop albums in the ‘90s will drop a new single called “King Talk” on May 2 in celebration of the NBA Playoffs. It is a collaboration with Ghanian-American rapper Blackway.
O’Neal first teased the song on Feb. 7 on his Twitter, Instagram and TikTok in an animation video that celebrated LeBron James passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
The 51-year-old entertainer had success in the ‘90s with music, including the platinum-selling album Shaq Diesel, released in 1993. It featured the gold-selling singles “What’s Up Doc? (Can We Rock)” and “(I Know I Got) Skillz” — which both cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — as well as collaborations with late A Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg, Def Jef and Fu-Schnickens. Some of the tracks were produced by Epmd’s Erick Sermon and Tribe’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

“Malik started playing piano at age eight,” the poet Cheryl Boyce-Taylor says. “He stuck with it for about three years, and then finally one day he came home very agitated. He and his teacher had had a huge fight. Malik told me that he was not returning to piano lessons and that he didn’t want to work with his teacher anymore because her breath stunk.

For subtlety’s sake, it’s better if coming-of-age stories don’t feature subplots in which characters are asked to pen their own autobiographical tales of maturation, and then spend time debating the merits of J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” as well as their personal similarities to its protagonist, Holden Caulfield. That “Boogie” does this is emblematic of its frequent clunkiness. Nonetheless, Eddie Huang’s directorial debut about a Chinese American basketball player trying to balance athletics, romance and parental expectations — elements that should give it a leg up on the competition when it debuts in theaters on March 5.

In 2017, the Los Angeles promoter Andrew Lojero had an idea for a new jazz concert series. Along with A Tribe Called Quest DJ-producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad and prolific R&b and hip-hop composer-producer Adrian Younge — the duo behind throwback soul project the Midnight Hour and the Luke Cage soundtrack — he began putting together bills featuring esteemed jazz veterans such as Roy Ayers and Gary Bartz, and rising stars of the genre like Keyon Herrold. Lojero dubbed the series Jazz Is Dead.

Rob Ford was always going to have his story come to the big screen one day. It’s just too juicy and larger than life. Somehow, the story of how Ford, the Mayor of Toronto, was finally caught up in a scandal that stuck, is brought to dull life in Run This Town. Instead of a riveting journalism procedural or an over the top political drama, we get things somewhere in between. The film thinks that it’s smarter than it is, more interesting than it is, and more important than it is. It all adds up to a major disappointment, especially if you saw the potential in this story. The movie is a drama about how the 2011 Rob Ford scandal came to be international news. At the beginning, we meet two of Ford’s top aides in Ashley (Nina Dobrev) and Kamal (Mena Massoud), who more or less run...

Writer-director Ricky Tollma’s “Run This Town” — about a young Toronto journalist’s quest to break the infamous Rob Ford crack-smoking story — premiered at SXSW over the weekend, and the movie’s score plays a subtle but pivotal role in stringing viewers along for the tense ride .

Music, despite not playing a major role in Daredevil & Jessica Jones, played a fairly significant part throughout the course of Luke Cage season one and it sure sounds like Marvel/Netflix's next joint-collaboration Iron Fist is planning on following the same route. Last Friday, during a Facebook Q&A session with Extra, star Finn Jones explained his highly intricate process of getting into character as Danny Rand for the very first time: "So before I started the role, I actually made a playlist on my iPod of songs that Danny Rand would listen to" He then went on to list off a few of the artists we may or may not hear over the course of thirteen episodes: "It’s a lot of kind of '90s hip-hop like De La Soul, Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang Clan. Saturday Night Live returned for its first post-election show over the weekend, and host Dave Chappelle wasted no time getting candid about Republican nominee Donald Trump’s unprecedented win.

The show also featured a number of election-themed sketches, including one in which Chappelle and surprise guest star Chris Rock chastised an election party full of overly-optimistic white Clinton supporters.
“Yeah, let’s hope there’s 100,000 [black voters] in Green Bay. Yo, brothers love the Packers!” Rock joked, feigning shock as the results rolled in and the group finally came to a realization: “I think America is racist.”

This episode was so good, it almost feels like an outlier. With legendary sketch and standup comic Dave Chappelle as the host, backed by A Tribe Called Quest debuting songs from their brand-new album, this episode would have become historic either way the election went. But the election went in favor of Donald Trump. Thus, it was up to “SNL” to answer: What do we do now?
After an exhausting, traumatic week, “SNL” knew the world would be watching. “SNL” was appointment TV. It was crucial. And they’d...

As impassioned reactions to the results of Tuesday’s presidential election continued throughout the week, many Saturday Night Live fans began to wonder how the political comedy stalwart would address the outcome, in which Republican nominee Donald Trump defeated his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, despite Clinton winning the popular vote.
As it turns out, the sketch show found its answer in another emotional headline from the week: the death of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen.
The news of the Canadian music icon’s death at 82 broke on Thursday, and provided a fitting accompaniment to SNL's first sketch on Saturday. The show opened simply on Kate McKinnon, in character as Clinton, sitting at a piano in one of the former First Lady’s signature pantsuits, singing "Hallelujah," Cohen's most famous song.

11 years after he walked away from one of the most successful shows in Comedy Central history, Dave Chappelle is hosting “Saturday Night Live” along with the remaining members of A Tribe Called Quest. It’s a surprising move for the wildly popular but enigmatic comedian, whose career has been marked with long absences, sudden appearances, and controversial stand-up performances. Here’s a quick timeline… In 2004, “Chappelle’s Show” was one of the most popular shows on basic cable and a huge money maker for Comedy Central. Chappelle displayed a willingness to plunge into depths of racial satire and N-word usage that.

It may be hard to remember the last time Saturday Night Live mattered before this weekend’s upcoming episode aired, but this is a doozy: Self-exiled genius comic Dave Chappelle is hosting with musical guest, long-disbanded genius hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest, who just released their final album on Friday. It will be epic. Here’s why.

Before the show was announced, you didn’t think Atcq would perform again, and now you know the group won’t perform again. If you saw the fascinating documentary Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, then you know that there was no chance of Atcq reuniting. Q-Tip’s ego, Phife Dawg’s feelings and Ali Shaheed Muhammad’s solo success made it seem impossible. (Meanwhile, Jarobi White left the group in 1991 but rejoined in 2006.)

One day after Donald Trump was named president-elect of the United States, Saturday Night Live dropped its first promo for Dave Chappelle’s hosting debut.
The 15-second teaser, which hit the Internet on Wednesday, isn’t anything spectacular, but it is unexpectedly compelling.
The camera follows Chappelle as he walks through the bowels of Rockefeller Center, lights streaking from above, before he takes the stage to an empty Studio 8H, set to the tune of musical guest A Tribe Called Quest’s classic, “Can I Kick It?.”

Now that the election is over we can focus on Saturday Night Live who will likely give this election one last bout of comedy. And who better to get that ball rolling than Dave Chappelle? Everyone in the free world is extremely pumped to see Chappelle back on national television when he hosts SNL this Saturday with musical guest A Tribe Called Quest. Some people might be disappointed in the new promo that was recently released but I think it’s great. There’s no Chappelle having fun with cast members. There’s no attempt at humor. There’s nothing. Forget Trump and Clinton debate cold opens: Saturday Night Live has secured a monster post-Election Day episode as comedian Dave Chappelle will make his SNL debut when he hosts on November 12th. The surviving members of A Tribe Called Quest will serve as the episode's musical guests.
For Chappelle, the hosting gig is the comedian's long-awaited return of sorts to television after he abruptly abandoned his beloved Comedy Central show in 2006. While Chappelle has continued to tour over the past decade, he has just one television/film credit – 2015's Chiraq – since Chappelle's Show ended.

Austin, TX- – Mondo is excited to unveil the soundtrack for Marvel’s Luke Cage with collectible artwork of the bulletproof hero by Matthew Woodson. Composers Adrian Younge (Something About April) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) have combined forces to produce one of the best scores of 2016 featuring an inspired, genre-bending blend of orchestral score and 90s hip-hop beats, filtered through the sonic lens of the works of Ennio Morricone.
It’s no surprise that the score hovers in the same terrain of the Spaghetti Western soundtracks of Morricone – the narrative of Luke Cage plays out like a modern Western, only set in Harlem. Younge and Muhammad have meticulously crafted one of the most unique sonic landscapes in the history of television.

Marvel’s latest Netflix series Luke Cage debuted this weekend, to high expectations. So far, the previous Marvel Netflix shows have been outstanding. Does Luke Cage continue the high quality trend? The answer is…mostly yes, but with reservations. Beware of Spoilers!
Marvel’s previous Netflix shows Daredevil (both seasons) and Jessica Jones have far exceeded the quality of the many network superhero TV shows that currently air. Daredevil in particular has raised the bar to new levels. That being the case, fan expectations for Luke Cage were sky high, especially after the positive response Mike Colter got for his debut of the character on Jessica Jones. Does it deliver? Yes…for the most part. It’s no Daredevil but it’s entertaining.

“Marvel’s Luke Cage” is a vibrant homage to Harlem in all of its cultural, political and yes, even unlawful glory. Thanks to showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker’s background as a music journalist turned TV producer, the famed New York neighborhood is reimagined with the energy of a hip-hop beat and power plays worthy of “Game of Thrones.”
It’s a kingdom based on everyday haunts like Genghis Connie’s Asian restaurant or Pop’s Barber Shop, where Luke Cage (Mike Colter) finds sanctuary after fleeing Hell’s Kitchen. While these establishments appeal to the hoi polloi, the glitterati prefer Harlem’s Paradise. The swank nightclub promises luxury, celebrity entertainment and even scandal thanks to the somewhat crooked ownership by Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali), who learned his ruthless ways from his grandmother, who ran illicit businesses back in the day.

Update: Buoyed by the initial critical response, Netflix has now rolled out a new clip for Luke Cage showcasing Mike Colter’s Power Man putting some goons in check. Have at it above!
Original story: The premiere has been dated, the episode titles are out in the open, and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has been busy championing the musical tenets of Marvel’s new standalone series – yes, Luke Cage is barrelling down on its anticipated debut and already, the first wave of reviews are beginning to pour online.
They are, in short, overwhelmingly positive, and though in time they will only represent a small portion of the critical consensus, Marvel and Netflix could well have another hit on their hands when it comes to Mike Colter’s Hero for Hire.

This Luke Cage review contains No spoilers, so read on with confidence! It is based on the first seven of thirteen episodes.
Luke Cage lacks the eye-popping martial arts choreography of Daredevil or the heart-pounding psychological terror of Jessica Jones. The night-time seediness of the Marvel’s fictional version of Hell’s Kitchen is replaced by the summery daytime promises of NYC’s resurgent Harlem neighbourhoods. But like its predecessors, Luke Cage boasts an excellent cast, tremendous atmosphere, and a willingness to go places that other Marvel Studios productions can’t. And it brings a few fun twists to the party, too.

This new Luke Cage sneak peek is all about the tunes we'll be hearing when the latest Marvel/Netflix collaboration hits our screens next month. Though there is some new footage here and there, it mainly focuses on Coker and music supervisors Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad explaining why they chose the specific songs that'll feature on the show. There's also input from the likes of Method Man, A$ap Ferg and others. If nothing else, it sounds like Luke Cage is going to boast a very distinctive, and very cool soundtrack. Big beats. You can expect a lot of hip-hop music to be at the forefront of Marvel and Netflix's Luke Cage. In addition to the soundtrack, the score will also have a very hip-hop feel as well. With help from guys like Method Man, A Tribe Called Quest, and A$AP Ferg, it sounds like this score will be just as awesome as the tunes we've heard so far.
A bulk of it is hip-hop, but it looks like jazz, R&B, and some other genres make their way into the mix as well. Personally, I haven't been displeased with anything I've heard from the videos so far, and this one is no exception! Check it all out in the video below.
