The series Keiko Sato: Pinku Maverick starts on Mubi on March 3, 2021 in many countries.Above: Blue Film WomanThese films, “Pink Cinema,” are anything but easy to digest; women are violently abused and objectified, sex is often un-consensual or underaged, murder, torture, suicide and castration are commonplace, and incest is an assumed normality. It’s fair to say that the appeal of these films, for many modern-day audiences, is not necessarily clear. So why are these films being restored and rewatched now?The long-debated question “is pornography essentially harmful to women?” is brought to the fore in these films and lingers on each drawn-out sexual violence scene. Amia Srinivasan, reflecting on this question with reference to Nancy Bauer’s essay on pornography, notes that “to fully understand this question, we need to attend more carefully to the particularities of pornography and the role it plays not just in culture generally but...

Decades before “Indecent Proposal”, Kan Mukai used the same concept to present a pinku film that also functions as an accusation towards capitalism, without neglecting, though, the titillating part, which, in this case, is presented in a kaleidoscope of images, occasionally in disco style. Let us take things from the beginning though.
As the story begins, we witness Kenzo, a bankrupt stockbroker being blackmailed by a rather lecherous loan shark named Uchiyama, who eventually suggests to him to let his wife have sex with him, in exchange for extending his payback deadline. The man eventually agrees, since his wife also reluctantly concurs, but Uchiyama does not stop there. After having his way with Kenzo’s wife, he suggests to her to have sex with his virgin son, in order to extend the deadline even more (note here that he never offers to erase the debt). The woman decides to sacrifice herself,...

The Toei Company made their mark in the 50s with a series of atmospheric horror films like Kinnosuke Fukada‘s Ghost Cat of Karakuri Tenjo and Tai Katô‘s The Ghost Story of Oiwa’s Spirit – esoteric shockers rooted in folklore and Kabuki theater that were rarely seen beyond Japanese cinemas. American audiences wouldn’t become familiar with the peculiar pleasures of Toei product until matinee-friendly fare like the animated charmer Alakazam the Great and the rubber-monster freak-out of The Green Slime invaded stateside theaters in the 60s.
Across town at Shintoho Studios – Toei’s closet competitors – director Teruo Ishii was busy shuttling between children’s fare (1957’s Super Giant) and tawdry exposes like 1961’s Sexy Chitai until the studio went...

Decades after its initial release in Japan, Kan Mukai’s Blue Film Woman (1969) made its U.S. debut at Fantastic Fest as part of the Behind the Pink Curtain retrospective. Mukai’s film is one of the few pinku eiga from the 1960s to exist in 35mm, and Stance has graciously struck a new 35mm print with English subtitles for this retrospective. Although not as salacious or extreme as later pinku fare, Blue Film Woman has everything one would want from a 60’s era pinku : it’s kind of psychedelic, it’s kind of sexy and it’s kind of sick.

While much of the attention of Fantastic Fest centers around the new discoveries and premiere feature films, each year we always present a new repertory retrospective. This year we are featuring two classic series: Not Quite Hollywood: Ozsploitation Classics and Behind The Pink Curtain: Japanese Pinku Films.
Not Quite Hollywood: Ozsploitation Classics
This year, Fantastic Fest is dedicated to making everyone we know into giant, committed fans of Ozploitation cinema. That is - the peculiar brand of exploitation films that bubbled to the surface in Australia in the '70s and '80s. Certainly the best known are the Mad Max films but those didn't emerge in a vacuum. The industry was already pumping out films as rude, tough and resourceful as the primal Aussie himself,...
