About an hour into the brief and dazzling Bushman, the central character announces, “I need a hamburger,” and then the screen goes black for a few seconds. When the movie resumes, it’s no longer a drama enlivened by a streetwise documentary sensibility, but a work of straight-up nonfiction. Relying on stills in this last stretch but maintaining the visual fluency of the preceding story, the final 10 minutes recount why director David Schickele stopped filming for a year: He was working instead on securing a release from prison for his wrongfully imprisoned leading man.
There are strong parallels between Gabriel, the onscreen outsider, and Paul Eyam Nzie Okpokam, the man who plays him. Both grew up in a Nigerian village. Like Gabriel, Okpokam was a graduate student at San Francisco State College. Schickele’s screenplay was to have ended with Gabriel being deported after falling into trouble with the law.

George Lucas’ debut feature, the sci-fi classic Thx 1138, is out now on Blu-ray. Here’s our look back at what is possibly the director’s finest film…
Of all the various attempts to bring the literary dystopias of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four or Aldous Huxley's Brave New World to the screen, none succeeded in replicating the extraordinary atmosphere and tone of their source novels.
John Hurt may have been magnificent as the doomed Winston Smith, but Michael Radford's adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four never quite retained the savagery present in Orwell's stark, terrifying prose. Similarly, the 1998 TV movie of Brave New World couldn't capture the despair in Huxley's vision of a scrubbed-up future of state controlled sex and drugs.

Good news in the commercial building energy efficiency sector: Johnson Controls' fourth annual Energy Efficiency Indicator (Pdf) report reveals that spending will grow significantly in 2010 after a decline last year. The Eei, which tracks investment plans and priorities of 1,400 executives in charge of North America's commercial building energy use, reports that 52% of those surveyed will invest in efficiency, up from 46% in 2009. And 60% of executives (compared to 55% in 2009) plan to to make operating budget expenditures in efficiency programs over the next year.
So why the rebound in spending? 87% of respondents say that it's because of cost savings (read: execs think that energy prices will go up this year), while 63% think that increasing energy efficiency will lead to an improved public image. "Momentum is building and it will continue to build," said Dave Myers, President of Johnson Controls Building Efficiency. "Long-term costs will escalate significantly."
Other contributing factors include government and utility...

The results from Johnson Controls' Energy Efficiency Indicator (Eei) survey are back, with few surprises. The report, which surveyed 1,400 North American executives in charge of energy management, found that the execs are interested in energy efficiency initiatives but need financial incentives to go through with them.
According to the survey, 71% of business executives are paying more attention to energy efficiency than they were a year ago, but respondents also reported a 10% decline in the use of facility capital budgets to finance energy projects along with a 6% decrease in investments using operational budgets. The reason, according to respondents, is limited capital and an unattractive payback period. C. David Myers, the president of Johnson Controls Building Efficiency Division, believes that federal government stimulus cash will spur investments in the next 18 months.
Business leaders are, however, considering a wide range of alternative energy technologies, including wind, solar, geothermal, and solar electric. And 38% of...
