How do Hollywood creators forge massive universes for their characters? For Ronald D. Moore, executive producer of “For All Mankind” and “Outlander,” it all began with the question: What if the Russians landed on the moon first? From this starting point, “For All Mankind” was born. Moore and his team explored their alternate timeline, weaving cultural, societal, and political shifts with historical events, crafting a rich universe for the Apple+ TV series.
Diving deeper into the intricacies of world-building for Variety’s Sony FYC Showcase, Moore was joined on the “Building a Television Universe” panel by “For All Mankind” co-showrunners and exec producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, as well as Maril Davis, who serves as an exec producer on both “For All Mankind” and “Outlander.” Also on the panel: “Justified: City Primeval” co-showrunners and exec producers Michael Dinner and Dave Andron, as well as Sony Pictures TV drama development exec VP Andrew Plotkin.

Some very good news over the long-distance relay for fans of alt-history sci-fi series For All Mankind. Apple TV+ has decided to not only renew the main show for a fifth season, but also commission a new spin-off sibling, Star City, which will explore the space race story from the Russian side of events.
Season Four of For All Mankind reached 2003, and the well-established Mars base on Happy Valley became a hotbed of blue-collar dissent and authority crackdowns. And asteroid mining became a hot-button issues, with disagreements over where this rich new source of minerals and metals should be positioned to maximize their use.
The fifth season will see another time jump, meaning we're likely to say goodbye to veteran characters such as those played by Joel Kinnaman and Krys Marshall.
Yet the new spin-off offers the chance to see the likes of NASA-chief-turned-defector Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt) again...

Following its critically acclaimed fourth season, which has been praised as “the best-written show on all of television” and “superior sci-fi,” Apple TV+ announced that its hit, award-winning space drama series “For All Mankind” has landed a renewal for season five. Additionally, Apple TV+ and “For All Mankind” creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi will expand the “For All Mankind” universe with a brand-new spinoff series, “Star City,” which will be showrun by Nedivi and Wolpert. Both series are produced for Apple TV+ by Sony Pictures Television.
“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of ‘For All Mankind,’” said executive producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi. “The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race.

"For All Mankind" is one of the best shows of the streaming era, as well as one of the best science-fiction shows of all time. The series takes place in an alternate reality where the Soviet Union lands on the Moon first, which kickstarts an escalating chain of events that puts humanity on a path to the stars. It serves as a grounded bridge between our reality and the sci-fi future of shows like "The Expanse" or "Star Trek." In just four seasons, the show's characters have gone from dealing with the complications of landing a craft on the Moon to the first armed conflict on the Moon, colonizing Mars, and even lassoing an asteroid.
It is a stunning achievement, though not a hugely surprising one considering the show comes from Ronald D. Moore, who already contributed greatly to the genre with his work on "Star Trek: The Next Generation,...

“For All Mankind” has been renewed for Season 5 at Apple TV+. In addition, Variety has learned the streamer has ordered a spinoff series focusing on the Soviet space program.
The spinoff is currently titled “Star City” and hails from “For All Mankind” creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi. Nedivi and Wolpert will serve as showrunners. The show will return to the beginning of “For All Mankind’s” alternative timeline, in which the Soviets are the first to reach the moon. But the show will then “explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward,” per the official logline.
“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of ‘For All Mankind,’” said Wolpert and Nedivi.

The alt-history space drama For All Mankind has taken great leaps throughout its run, and we don’t just mean the nearly decade-long time jumps between seasons. The series, from Ronald D. Moore, Ben Nedivi, and Matt Wolpert, has dared to imagine a world in which a significant setback in the space race led to greater innovation in the U.S. and, for a time, spurred social change.

Apple TV+ isn’t done exploring the depths of space.
The streamer has renewed its drama series For All Mankind for Season 5. Additionally, Apple TV+ has given the green light to a spinoff series titled Star City, also from creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi.
Apple is billing Star City is “a propulsive paranoid thriller” which will explore a key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, it will explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.

[This story contains major spoilers from the season four finale of For All Mankind.]
Krys Marshall had a different ending in mind for NASA Commander Danielle Poole. It’s fitting since For All Mankind is revisionist history, after all.
“It’s based on the premise of the Russians getting to the moon first, ahead of the Americans, and it sends our world into a place where the space race never ends,” explains Marshall of the Apple TV+ series. “Because of that, both technological advancements and social advancements continue in a way that they wouldn’t have had the space race been won by the U.S. The world as we know it is altered, I think, for the better.”
Her character began as one of a dozen female astronauts in 1969 and has grown over the four seasons of the Apple TV+ series — which span more than 30 years — to become a commander on Mars in 2003.

Danny Stevens (Casey Johnson) has been a controversial character in Apple TV+’s breakout sci-fi series, For All Mankind. At first, the son of famous astronaut couple Gordo and Tracy Stevens cut a glum figure, having lost his childhood best friend in a terrible accident. Danny and his brother Jimmy’s emotional needs were also side-lined as their parents’ careers took increasing priority, and the pair grew up in the shadow of their heroic sacrifice on the moon.
In season two of the popular show, we found out that Danny was following in his parents’ footsteps, attending the Annapolis Naval Academy with an eye to becoming an astronaut himself. Following the success and reception of season three of Apple TV+’s alternate history sci-fi series For All Mankind, the program will make its return with another 10 episodes this fall. Now, Apple has released the trailer, building on the world – and beyond – that the series has explored thus far.

Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. Do you feel like there are too many shows on television? So do I. But drop that thought for now — drop it! — and let me sell you on "For All Mankind." Apple TV+'s exceptional interstellar drama boasts many of the same features that other successful and acclaimed shows on streaming have — gorgeous camera work, a diverse cast of refreshingly new faces, punchy storytelling, big ideas — but the particular way that series creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi fit all the pieces together puts "For All Mankind" a cut above the pack.
Somewhere in between an anthology series and a traditional narrative drama, "For All Mankind" features some recurring cast, some cast that remain in their seasons, and story arcs that only glancingly relate across seasons. Part of that is due to the ingenious narrative decision to jump forward in time each season. Season 1 started out in...

“For All Mankind” Season 4 is nearly here. And a trailer that just played on the first day of New York Comic Con (where they’re also screening the first episode of the new season) gives us our first taste of what’s to come. Watch it above.
If you’ve never seen “For All Mankind” — created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi — it’s an alternate history tale of the space race. The first season was set during the race to the moon, with America training a group of female astronauts and Russia getting there first.
Each subsequent season has moved further away from actual history while still incorporating details from real life. And, crucially, each season is set a decade after the previous season, meaning that old-age makeup technology is constantly being put to the test. (Sometimes it works better than others.)

Are you a science nerd who's become disheartened by our collective inability as a species to work together towards a common goal, to put ego and wealth and politics aside, and simply explore the cosmos for the betterment of our species? If you haven't been following along already, allow me to point you in the direction of "For All Mankind." I should clarify, this isn't the show to watch if you're looking for an escape from all the cynicism we've been seeing in our news headlines for the better part of the 21st Century. Rather, the Apple TV+ series shines a direct light on all our missteps through an alternate-history lens -- one in which the Russians won the space race by landing a man on the moon back in the 1960s, kicking off an even more intense game of one-upmanship between the world's superpowers locked in an eternal Cold War.

For All Mankind Season 3 threw the show’s alternate history space race into overdrive — what was once a contest between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. expanded to include a new competitor. Helios was much more than a would-be contender; until some fancy maneuvering on Dani Poole’s (Krys Marshall) part and Ed Baldwin’s (Joel Kinnaman) second thoughts, it looked like the privately owned space exploration company could beat NASA and Russian cosmonauts to Mars.
But while NASA may have sort of won the day, and Ed and his daughter Kelly (Cynthy Wu) established a base along with Dani’s team, tragedy and subterfuge loomed around the corner. Series creators Ronald D. Moore, Ben Nedivi, and Matt Wolpert delivered one of their signature finales with “Stranger in a Strange Land”: a nailbiter full of bombast and heart, featuring another 10-year leap into the future, with...

Given that Disney+ is one of its chief competitors, Apple TV+ certainly isn't the first streaming platform where you'd expect to hear music from a Disney theme park ride. But for viewers of "For All Mankind" season 3, that's exactly what they got when they tuned in to the fourth episode, "Happy Valley." In the midst of an alternate-history mission to Mars, NASA gains an unexpected edge in the space race by breaking out the solar sails on its Sojourner 1 vessel. Its rivals then get an earful of the sea shanty "Pirates Overture" from Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.
Apparently, this song started out as a bit of temp music, meaning it was intended as a stopgap until another workable song was found. In an interview with The Wrap, "For All Mankind" executive producers Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert explained that the idea of linking a pirate tune with the...

Exclusive: Svetlana Efremova (The Americans) has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming fourth season of Apple TV+’s space drama series For All Mankind.
Created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, For All Mankind explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended. The series presents an aspirational world where NASA astronauts, engineers and their families find themselves in the center of extraordinary events seen through the prism of an alternate history timeline — a world in which the Ussr beats the US to the moon.
The third season shifted the action to the early ’90s with a race to a new planetary frontier: Mars. The Red Planet became the new front in the Space Race not only for the U.S. and the Soviet Union, but also an unexpected new entrant with a lot to prove and even more at stake.
