The Will Smith Redemption Tour made a stop in the Middle East over the weekend, as the star appeared at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia. It was here that he hinted at his various “mistakes” and teased I Am Legend 2.
Speaking at the event, Will Smith said, “I love puzzles, I love problems. Yeah, so I started making my own problems. Life is going too well.” One of those problems, of course, was assaulting a comedian in front of millions of viewers for making a mediocre joke about his wife. Another is that Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, have one of the most unhinged “relationships” in Hollywood.
Still, Will Smith was reportedly met with a welcome reception, with fans cheering his arrival and commitment to the crowd. On this – and his claimed attempts at bringing positivity to the world – he said, “Fame is a unique monster…...

Will Smith has revealed that the development of I Am Legend 2 is moving at pace, with both him and Michael B. Jordan on board and a first script delivered.
News of the reboot of the post-apocalyptic action thriller blockbuster – which grossed more $585 million back in 2007 – broke earlier this year when I Am Legend writer Akiva Goldsman re-teamed with Warner Bros. with a fresh first-look deal.
Smith told an In Conversation at Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival on Saturday evening that he was due to have a call with Jordan the next day.
“I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. We’re really close. I am probably giving up too much information…the script just came in,” he said.
Smith also explained how the production planned to get around the fact his character, U.S. army virologist Robert Neville, died in the original film by reverting to...

Warner Bros. and producer Akiva Goldsman‘s company Weed Road are working on a sequel to director Francis Lawrence’s 2007 Richard Matheson adaptation I Am Legend (watch it Here), which will see Will Smith reprising the role of Dr. Robert Neville, now joined in the cast by an unspecified character played by Michael B. Jordan. Lawrence has said he would “love to” return to the direct the sequel… which is made possible because there were two different endings filmed for I Am Legend. The version of I Am Legend that reached theatres ended with Neville sacrificing himself (using a grenade to blow up himself and the attacking “Darkseeker” creatures) to protect other characters. But that ending was actually a reshoot. The original ending was more low-key, with Neville making peace with the Darkseekers after realizing that he was the monster in the eyes of these creatures. That alternate ending was...

The writer of I Am Legend, Akiva Goldsman, has shared a hopeful update on the long-awaited sequel to the 2007 sci-fi blockbuster starring Will Smith. In an interview with Collider, Goldsman revealed that he and Smith have been discussing the possibility of revisiting the post-apocalyptic world of the original film, which was based on the novel by Richard Matheson.

Oblivion was released as a Tom Cruise vehicle in 2013, giving him his second best box office weekend up to that time outside of the Mission: Impossible franchise. However, the sci-fi pseudo-epic also received middling reviews and almost immediately dropped out of the public consciousness altogether. Which makes its reemergence into it via Netflix this month intriguing.
Oblivion admittedly has its flaws, yet it is worth a second look if only because it so clearly has ambitions to be something so much more. In 2013 we had only recently gotten a glimpse at what the future held as the commercial effects of the first Avengers movie began to be felt. It was a year of two Marvel movies (three if you count The Wolverine), one Superman movie, and a slew of remakes, reboots, sequels and prequels, from The Hobbit, and The Hunger Games, to Star Trek: Into Darkness and G.I. Joe.

In "I Am Legend," Will Smith stars as the brilliant scientist Robert Neville, the lone survivor of a man-made plague that has turned all of humanity into bloodthirsty mutants. Neville spends his days wandering through a desolate New York City in the hopes of finding survivors and trying to develop a cure using his own immune blood as a source. As the last remaining human being, his survival is paramount. But the infected Darkseekers wait in vain, hoping that today will be the day Neville finally makes a mistake and falls into their grasp.

Remember a time before "The Walking Dead" (and its never-ending assortment of spin-offs) when post-apocalyptic stories hadn't yet become an overused, played-out staple? 2007 was a very different year, to say the least. Expectations were high when the news initially broke that Will Smith, one of the world's biggest movie stars and in the prime of his career, would be leading a new movie based on author Richard Matheson's widely influential 1954 novel, "I Am Legend." That hype translated to strong box office returns, even if Smith himself had higher expectations. The story follows Robert Neville, possibly the last surviving human on Earth after a pandemic has transformed the...

If you want to talk about movies that have some divisive endings then 2007’s I Am Legend is at the top of that list. I remember seeing that movie back in eighth grade and loving it right up until that ending. Boy, that scene where Will Smith’s character had to kill his pet dog, Sam… even if you’re not a dog-lover, it’s just impossible to not shed tears. And then his character, military scientist Robert Neville, discovered that he actually wasn’t the last man on Earth. His daily broadcasts were eventually heard by two survivors, a woman and a young

After 15 years, Will Smith is ready to revisit the postapocalyptic ruins of New York City in an "I Am Legend" sequel, but he's not facing the zombie-vampires alone. Smith has enlisted the help of "Black Panther" star, Michael B. Jordan, to create the follow-up film, according to Deadline. As part of their first collaboration, Smith and Jordan will produce and star in the upcoming feature. "Gonna be good," Smith captioned a screengrab from the film on Instagram on March 4.
The movie will be written and produced by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who is responsible for adapting Richard Matheson's postapocalyptic horror novel, "I Am Legend" (1954) into the 2007 film. Following its initial release in 2007, "I Am Legend" opened with $77,200,000 in box office sales and eventually raked in $585,400,000 worldwide.
As of now, the sequel does not have a dedicated director or a set release date.

Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman took to Twitter on Monday to quash a conspiracy theory, centered on his 2007 Warner Bros. film, I Am Legend.
The theory, which has circulated at least since the beginning of this year, says that the fictional thriller is set in 2021, and that Covid-19 vaccines created its mutant epidemic.
“Oh. My. God. It’s a movie,” Goldsman tweeted on Monday. “I made that up. It’s. Not. Real.”
The Oscar winner was specifically responding to writer and podcaster Marc Bernardin, who earlier tweeted that, “We. Are. All. Going. To. Die. Sooner. Than. We. Should.”
Bernardin’s comments came in reference to an August 6 New York Times article—”Inside One Company’s Struggle to Get All Its Employees Vaccinated”—which alluded to an employee at a Bronx eyewear company who bought into the theory.

“I Am Legend” co-writer Akiva Goldsman issued a blunt response on social media to anti-vaxxers citing the 2007 Will Smith blockbuster as a reason not to get vaccinated, or at least a reason to be concerned and skeptical about getting the vaccine. Anti-vaxxers have been referencing “I Am Legend” across social media, but Goldsman caught wind of the recent attention around his film because of an article published by The New York Times that focused on employees in New York City resistant to getting vaccinated.

People opposed to vaccines have circulated that claim about the movie’s plot widely on social media. Last March, confronted with a pandemic none of us had expected or understood, many people found themselves rewatching Steven Soderberg’s Contagion. Whether out of morbid fascination or as a guideline to what we might see in the future it quickly topped charts on streaming services. A year on and another pandemic movie has made it into Netflix’s top 10 – 2007’s I Am Legend, a horror sci-fi starring Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville, who thinks he’s the last man on Earth after a virus has wiped out most of the population. Directed by Francis Lawrence, who would go on to make the Hunger Games sequels, a new adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel had been in the works at Warner Bros. since the mid ‘90s, with various talent attached, including Ridley Scott and Michael Bay as directors and Tom Cruise and Arnold Schwarzenegger to star.

There seems to be no end in sight for the Covid-19 coronavirus that has wreaked havoc across the world with just shy of 1 million global cases and over 50,000 deaths. Governments are locking down their countries and enforcing strict social distancing and extensive travel bans in an attempt to flatten the curve and reduce the overload of hospitals struggling to accommodate overwhelming numbers of people. It’s been a difficult few months, and it’s only going to get worse before it gets better.
This time in history has brought about immense feelings of loneliness and isolation as people are forced to live away from friends and family and avoid public outings to reduce their chances of infection. Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to star in I Am Legend, with Ridley Scott directing. We look back at a lost movie...
Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend is one of the greatest vampire novels ever written, and is a noted inspiration on people like Stephen King and George Romero. The book tells the story of Robert Neville, who is seemingly the lone survivor of a plague that turned most of humanity into bloodsucking ghouls. Neville survives nightly attacks by hordes eager for his blood while trying to overcome the crushing loneliness of being the last human left. It’s a book that manages the twin feat of being a great horror story and an achingly sad character study; it’s got a gut-punch of a twist too.
I Am Legend is an inherently cinematic concept, but it hasn’t had a smooth ride on the big screen.

Filmmakers often make multiple endings to their movie. Sometimes this is because they change their minds; sometimes the other ending is used as a ‘red herring’; Sometimes preview audiences don’t like the original ending; And sometimes it’s due to studio interference. Occasionally, the unused ending is actually better than the ending which is ultimately used. Here are five films where the alternate ending was the one that should have been used, instead of what we got.

The world is coming to an end- at least according to Hollywood. Thankfully, when the world does end, us movie-going humans will have more than a few tricks for survival up our charred sleeves, thanks to the heroes of these post-apocalyptic movies.
The post-apocalypse is at the forefront of cinema again with the rebirth of Mad Max in Fury Road and the upcoming post-alien invasion The 5th Wave and we’re eating it up. We’re not arguing with the National Board of Review’s choice in naming Mad Max: Fury Road the year’s best film (squarely on the missing arm of Furiosa, if you ask us).
Whether you’re facing the vast post-apocalyptic wasteland in search of water with a bad-ass leader like Furiosa or navigating the nuclear badlands and avoiding those feral ghouls in Fallout 4, these post-apocalypse-set movies will show you the way to survival.

A genre constantly overlooked at awards ceremonies, sci-fi cinema is full of stunning performances - like these...
Should we care whether the Academy likes science fiction or not? Does it matter that the genre and its best performances are regularly overlooked by most mainstream awards bodies? Probably not. But consider this: cinema is by now a long-established artform. Movies chart all aspects of the human condition: birth, death, happiness, sadness, ennui, fear, elation, empathy.
The best sci-fi movies arguably achieve the same thing. Where else is the sense of mystery and triumphant discovery felt more keenly than in, say, Solaris? What other genre could explore the nature of addiction with the same humour and pathos as A Scanner Darkly?
Could the themes of ageing and disease in The Fly be transposed to a realistic drama and still be as thrilling, bizarre and tragic?

In honour of The Times’ film critic Kevin Maher’s list of iconic movie rebels, we take a look at what it truly takes to make a tough guy in cinema.
What constitutes a tough guy, as in ‘man’, on film is usually a traditional interpretation of masculinity. There is always room for the sensitive hero in a sweater and slacks, but for those who watch movies as ingrained wish fulfilment, the sexy and sweaty man’s man needs suitable attire to reflect his personality. But it is not just about the garments themselves. A jacket is a jacket, but a leather jacket is a symbol. A wax jacket on the other hand is enlightened – the reformist hero.
Waxed cotton is fantastic stuff. Essentially it is a treated fabric, albeit one that needs regular re-covering to ensure longevity. The result is a lightweight, versatile material that, although not especially warm,...

In 2007, I Am Legend, which starred Will Smith ("Six Degrees of Separation") as 'Dr. Robert Neville', earned Warner Bros. $586 million at the worldwide box office. Then in 2012, Warner Bros. decided that they wanted a follow-up and hired Grace of Monaco screenwriter Arash Amel to pen a prequel, that would've featured Will Smith's 'Neville' just before the outbreak. That attempted failed to get a greenlight from WB, and it was scrapped. Fast forward to this past April, Warner Bros. purchased a the spec script A Garden At The End Of The World that was written by an unknown screenwriter, Gary Graham. The script has been described as a "sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers." WB noticed that Graham's script could work as a follow-up to I Am Legend with some tweaking and here and there. WB then approached the original I Am Legend producers Akiva Goldsman, James Lassiter...

After Earth: down to earth with a bump for Will Smith
A decade and a half ago, the makers of Alien: Resurrection decided to bring back Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley as a clone of herself in order to continue the sci-fi saga following the character’s death in Alien 3. The move failed the logic test, but 20th Century Fox brushed all that aside because it wanted the series’ totemic star in the movie.
Perhaps Hollywood is learning. This week, Deadline reports that Warner Bros has abandoned plans for a prequel to I Am Legend. It would have seen Will Smith shoehorned in as the returning Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville in the story of the Us...

It was only a matter of time before Warner Bros figured out a way to relaunch I Am Legend as a franchise. The studio has been itching to do something with the property ever since the 2007 film raked in $586 million worldwide. They've attempted to get sequels off the ground, and even prequels- which would bring Will Smith back as Robert Neville. Nothing came of those previous attempts, and Smith's reluctance to return likely aided that.

Warner Bros has spent the better part of a decade working on getting another I Am Legend off the ground. They’ve tried it all, the “see the origins of the zombie outbreak” prequel, the “screw it, let’s just clone Will Smith and do another one” sequel, everything. There were even zombie elephants involved at one point. But these options required the return of Smith as Robert Neville, and Smith has never been particularly keen on returning to the property (maybe it was the zombie elephants that turned him off). Now, only one option remains: Warners is slamming its fist down on the flashing red “reboot” button, obliterating the old I Am Legend and redoing the film from the ground up. Deadline reports the studio is using A Garden at the End of the World, a spec script from Gary Graham (an Apple Store employee turned screenwriter) as the foundation of a new I Am Legend. Warners...

In the years since 2007’s post-apocalyptic thriller I Am Legend, Warner Bros. has been trying to find a way to fashion a franchise from the film. They have, over the years, considered a potential prequel and then a seemingly impossible sequel. Now, though, it appears the studio is ready to abandon finding a way for Will Smith to return and has come up with a plan to craft a reboot.According to Deadline, Warners has retrieved Gary Graham’s spec script A Garden At The End Of The World from storage, where it has been sitting since the company bought it in April. Graham, an Apple store worker-turned-scriptwriter, concocted what was at the time described as a science fiction take on The Searchers, but that apparently contains enough similarities to Richard Matheson’s original Legend story that the studio has now engaged him to re-work it. It will become a...

Exclusive: After years of trying, Warner Bros finally has found a way to extend its hit Will Smith last-man-on-Earth blockbuster I Am Legend into a potential new franchise. The studio is working on a reboot that isn’t meant to star Smith, who has been reluctant to do sequels and so far has avoided a reprise in Independence Day 2. Warner is retrofitting A Garden At The End Of The World, a spec script that the studio bought back in April from Gary Graham, who was working at the Apple store in midtown Manhattan when he posted his script on the Black List website and got the attention of CAA and manager Brooklyn Weaver. They signed him and sent his script out. Amid several bids, Warner Bros acquired what was described as a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers. The death of Richard Matheson on 22 June 2013 marked the end of an amazing career as a novelist and screenwriter. His most enduring legacy will always be as the author of I Am Legend, arguably one of the finest vampire novels ever written. Considered ‘the very peak of paranoid science fiction,’ Matheson’s groundbreaking debut novel is one of the few contemporary vampire stories that came close to the literary excellence of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
With plans of a sequel to the Will Smith misfire I Am Legend (2007) being seriously considered by filmmakers, there is only one thing that fans of Matheson’s outstanding post apocalyptic work are asking “when is there going to be a Proper film version of the book?”

Heroes. Close your eyes and picture one. I imagine you’re picturing someone brave with a great chin, someone who is ice-cool when under pressure, someone who saves the day and gets the girl. Now close your eyes and picture a giant nerd.
You may have an image in your mind of some Beauty And The Geek reject or that kid you were in school with that was voted most likely to die a virgin. What you definitely won’t be picturing are any of the screen heroes featured on this list.
That’s because, via the magic of cinema and choice casting decisions, these giant nerds are transformed from the socially awkward, introverted nerdilingers they should be into calm as a coma, Nazi-killing, ghost busting, terrorist slapping heroes.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at 10 screen heroes who should have been giant nerds.

How does a simple zombie movie rack up a $200 million budget? Three words: Reshoots, reshoots, reshoots.
As EW’s Geoff Boucher reported in his World War Z cover story this past March, the film originally built to a climactic zombie battle that was to be shot in Budapest. But after filming was underway, Paramount decided to bring in a pair of new screenwriters — ex-Lostie Damon Lindelof and Drew Goddard of The Cabin in the Woods — to reshape the movie’s third act.

Is the pop culture invasion of vampires and the undead a sign we're facing up to the darkness in our cultures? Or just fun?
Warm Bodies, billed as a zombie romantic comedy, is the latest example of an unusual take on a monster that's invaded the popular consciousness. Both zombies and vampires have hit the big screen hard in recent years, with the Twilight series, Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Diary of the Dead and a host of others clamouring for attention in cinemas.
Zombies are useful antagonists, because they're both an environmental threat and a specific danger, wrapped up in an uneasy, paranoia-inducing package. Haitian rituals are often cited as their origin: voodoo rituals producing animated corpses or mindless automatons. But culturally, in the west, zombies can be more easily traced to the films of George Romero, and a resultant broad literature that tackles human loneliness and our ability to deal with disaster.

Christmas 2007 marked the end of a long, rocky road for the film “I Am Legend”. The film started development in 1995 after Mark Protosevich handed in a radically different draft from the film we finally saw on the screen. In fact, Protosevich had a story more closely resembling that of the original Richard Matheson story (which was a feat in and of itself, considering the property had already been twice adapted with “The Last Man On Earth” and “The Omega Man”), pitting Robert Neville against his original nemesis, Ben Cortman: his neighbor who became a baddie once he was converted. Years later, I Am Legend finally had its day and was met with moderate Box Office success.
Here now are 10 images that you’ve probably never seen before.
1. Ridley Scott’s I Am Legend
In 1997, Sir Ridley Scott was attached to direct the Protosevich draft of the script on behalf of Warner Brothers.

The Mayan Calendar may have run out, but it’s Hollywood that has been the one predicting the most grisly ways for the world to end. Where disaster movies typically exploit the visual and visceral excitement associated with such a scenario, other movies have focused on the psychological and philosophical impact – especially on the survivors.
As much as movie remakes get a bad reputation for lazy writing and greed-fueled audience exploitation, they are interesting in two ways that normal movies are not. First of all, you get to see a different perspective of basically the same story. More importantly though, remakes can’t help but add current styles and filmmaking trends consistent with the time in which they are made. Filmmaking methods are constantly evolving and this is never clearer then when comparing a remake with the original film that preceded it.

When asked about the in-development sequel I Am Legend 2, which he was reported to be a producer on, Will Smith recently clarified:

So they’d better come up with a take that’s legend…wait for it…dary.

Ahh, what a difference a sequel makes. Earlier this year, the Hollywood rumor mill was buzzing with news that Overbrook Entertainment (the production co. owned by Will Smith) was working on a sequel for the 2007 hit "I Am Legend," which would feature Smith once again as Robert Neville — despite the fact that things hadn’t turned out so well for him at the end of the original.
No, he wasn't coming back from the dead, though we do kinda love when that happens in the movie-verse. Rather, the powers-that-be explained that technical glitch away by saying "I am Legend 2" wouldn't be a direct sequel, but rather a different story told within the same world. Clever.
Now, however, it looks like Smith may not be involved at all. The star explained, "Producers are working on it. I'm not actually working on it. If it's great, I'm into it."

Back in February it was reported that Warner Bros is developing a sequel to "I Am Legend" with hope that Will Smith will return to play scientist Robert Neville. At the time, Smith said that he'll produce but won't sign on to star until he sees the script. Now, Smith has confirmed that the sequel is still in the works. "Producers are working on it," he said. "I'm not actually working on it. If it's great, I'm into it." When asked if he will once again star, Smith replied: "Probably not." The actor went on to say that he's no longer interested in making sequels. "I don't want to be the sequel guy," he explained. "I figure I've got about six or seven more years where I can run and jump a little bit and then I'm going butt and gut for the rest of my career." Sounds like Smith...

With his Men In Black III crossing the $500 million worldwide gross mark today, Will Smith‘s return after a four-year absence can at least be considered a financial success. As he recently wrapped M. Night Shyamalan‘s sci-fi epic After Earth, the actor has yet to decide on his next project. With new reports, one thing is for certain: it won’t likely be a follow-up to his 2007 hit I Am Legend.
Talk of a sequel to Francis Lawrence‘s post-apocalyptic drama has sprouted up regularly, most recently as early as this year, when WB confirmed a deal was closed to develop the film and intentions to get Smith to return to role as Robert Neville. Since he was a scientist who sacrifices himself for the betterment of humankind during the finale, the major question is how they will continue the story as it is reportedly “not being called a prequel.

Back in February it was reported that Warner Bros. and Overbrook Entertainment (the production company owned by Will Smith) had begun working with producer Akiva Goldsman to craft a sequel to the 2007 winter blockbuster I Am Legend. What was interesting about the report, however, was that it said Smith would likely return to the film as Robert Neville, despite the fact that the character met an unfortunate end at the finish of the first movie. This was explained away by saying that I Am Legend 2 wouldn't be a direct sequel, but instead would just tell a different story in the same universe, but now it's looking like Smith may not be involved at all. In an interview last month with the BBC (via Movies.com), Smith revealed that he actually doesn't have a hand in the development of I Am Legend 2 and isn't contractually obligated to return for the sequel.

Will Smith says he’s probably not doing the sequel to “I am Legend” if and when Warner Bros. finally gets it going. Maybe. Frankly, his answers to the question is somewhat contradictory. Of course, the studio has been “working” on the sequel/prequel for some time now, and have yet to get it up and running, so maybe the whole topic is moot. In a review interview, Smith was asked about the possibility of sequels to his past movies, including “I am Legend”. According to Smith: Producers are working on it. I’m not actually working on it. If it’s great, I’m into it. Wait, what? So does that mean he’s willing to do it if it’s “great”? Maybe not. He goes on to say, when asked if he’d be willing to return as Robert Neville, the hero of the Francis Lawrence-directed adaptation...

Hollywood directors seem to be sneaking into our homes in the night time, snatching away our favourite books and destroying them by regurgitating slapdash adaptations on the big screen. Everything from science-fiction favourites to timeless graphic novels have been snapped up by the jaws of some horrible, dollar-eyed monster and squeezed into an hour and a half of such terrible cinema that it would make anyone spit out their popcorn. While it wasn’t the worst movie in the world, do you think that 2007′s I Am Legend, based on Richard Matheson‘s 1954 novel of the same name, starring Will Smith was deserving of a sequel or prequel? Of course in Hollywoodland, the studios only look at box office and since the original scored almost $600 million, it’s certainly ripe for another visit to the theater.
Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has already closed deals with Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment to produce another film, with the intention of Will Smith (After Earth, Men In Black III) returning to his role as scientist Robert Neville. It’s not immediately clear whether or not the film will be a prequel or a sequel, but Will Smith reportedly won’t commit until the script is ready.
No production or release dates have been announced for the as yet Untitled I Am Legend Sequel.
