Before John Wick ushered in a new era of stuntmen turned directors, Expend4bles director Scott Waugh was one of the few exceptions to pull off the feat. Following in the footsteps of his older brother Ric Roman Waugh, the younger Waugh made his own luck by funding 2012’s Act of Valor and co-directing the action film alongside Mouse McCoy. The film starred active-duty Navy Seals, and its success then opened the door for Waugh to direct Need for Speed for Disney, as well as DreamWorks head Steven Spielberg.
Expend4bles is now Waugh’s fifth feature film, and he managed to cross off a major bucket-list item in working with Sylvester Stallone. The duo were supposed to join forces with Jackie Chan on Waugh’s other 2023 film, Hidden Strike, but the volatility of Hollywood schedules led to Stallone’s exit. However, Waugh still managed to bring a bit of Chan’s...

The arrival of a fresh, new voice on the indie filmmaking scene is always an exciting event and the latest debut on our radar is that from Chelsea Bo, producer of Joshua Leonard’s Fully Realized Humans and Sarah Adina Smith’s The Drop. Written, directed, and starring Bo, No Right Way is set for a fall festival tour and now we’re pleased to exclusively debut the trailer for the film, following the journey of half-sisters.
Also starring Ava Acres, Eliza Coupe-Marks, Jim Hanks, and Sufe Bradshaw, here’s the official synopsis: “Georgie, a brazen 13-year-old, has her life uprooted when she’s thrust into the guardianship of her half-sister Harper and torn away from her life in Vegas. Harper sees this turbulent time as a window of opportunity to pave a brighter future for her half-sister, but Harper’s self-righteous attempts to protect Georgie only lead to exposing their paralleled childhood wounds.

“The King of Staten Island” premiered on June 12 on video-on-demand (instead of in theaters due to the continued pandemic). The comedy is directed by Judd Apatow and stars “Saturday Night Live” cast member Pete Davidson, who also co-wrote the film inspired by his own life and the death of his father, a New York City firefighter who was a victim of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. So what do critics think of that blend of pathos and humor?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 68 based on 43 reviews so far: 29 positive and 14 somewhat mixed, but none outright negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film is currently rated 70% fresh based on 150 reviews; since Rt only classifies reviews as positive or negative, that means 105 critics generally like the film while 45 dislike it to varying degrees. The Rt critics’ consensus summarizes the reviews by saying, “‘The King of Staten Island’s’ uncertain...
