An is the main character of the Doan Gioi novel Song of the South. The Vietnamese author tapped into the spirit of adventure when he wrote about a son’s quest to meet his father. The emotional journey has a very interesting backdrop: the strife between the French army and the rebel army. The new Netflix film adapts the novel and tries to create a cinematic equivalent of An’s journey, and it works in most parts, especially when dealing with An’s story.
The novel was the foundation for the TV series in 1997, which was quite a hit in Vietnam, and it’s no surprise that Quang Dung Nguyen has tried to tell the story again by directing this film. The film immediately reminded me of stories that are quite profound, usually because of the journey of the protagonist. The coming-of-age aspect of the film is reminiscent of films...

★★★☆☆Martial arts cinema never fails to surprise. Take, for instance, the visually stunning, high-kicking Vietnamese period adventure The Lady Assassin (2013). In this garish, cartoon-esque adventure - starring Kim Dzung, Tang Thanh Ha, Thanh Hang, Thai-Hoa Le, Diem My and Ngoc Quyen - director Quang Dung Nguyen and writer Ngo Quan Dung have fashioned a celluloid romp which, though preposterous in its premise, is as entertaining and aesthetically impressive as many films currently being produced in the West. Beside a beautiful beach on a lonely stretch of coastline live four women whose job is to entice the corrupt local hierarchy to stay at their appealing hostelry.

A lot of martial arts movies tell stories that follow the same revenge style tale. You have the hero created to gain vengeance against some nemesis who has the ability to pay for plenty of other fighters to stand in their way. Add a few story elements on top that template and with some well-choreographed fight scenes you can have a hit on your hands. The Lady Assassin aka “My Nhan Ke” fits this scenario, but with the twist being that the heroes of this piece are some faux-prostitutes who kill the men who arrive at the Duong Son Tavern.
At the start of The Lady Assassin this is exactly what happens when a funeral procession makes its way to the tavern. Once the men are...

There’s nothing quite as sexy and downright alluring as watching women with swords do their thing in a well-crafted action-packed motion picture. And I’m not talking about that generic Japanese crap where the girls are more concerned with adequate cleavage than the finer nuances of an on-screen fight. I’m talking about Michelle Yeoh kind of stuff, though we don’t get motion pictures of that caliber too often. Fortunately for folks living in the UK, director Quang Dung Nguyen’s Vietnamese actioner “The Lady Assassin” is on its way to DVD later this month. In fact, martial arts fans only have a few more days before its official release. Count all of the loose change in your couch and make plans accordingly. Here’s what the flick is all about: A sexy, action packed martial-arts fantasy set in a traveller’s tavern whose owner, with the help...
