“The Amazing Race” returned Wednesday on CBS, nearly two years after production shut down in February 2020 due to the fast-spreading Covid-19 virus. In our video recap of the Season 33 premiere above, watch editors Denton Davidson and Paul Sheehan discuss their early favorites to win, which teams could improve the most this season and who deserves to be sent packing immediately.
“I was thrilled that it was back,” Sheehan exclaims. “It was nostalgic in the sense of seeing all these people without masks. It was ‘The Amazing Race,’ which I have loved since the first season.” Singing police officers Michael Norwood & Moe Badger couldn’t keep up with the competition and they became the first team eliminated from the race following Leg 1. No team was eliminated following the second leg, although twin sisters Lulu & Lala Gonzalez finished in last place.

After getting forced into the longest Pit Stop ever by Covid-19, “The Amazing Race” is back. Season 33 premieres Wednesday at 8/7c on CBS, nearly two years after production shut down in February 2020 due to the fast-spreading virus.
Throughout most of 2020, it likely felt improbable at times that the globe-trotting series would roll cameras again, but as Phil Keoghan told Gold Derby last June, producers were diligently drafting a Covid-safe plan for the restart. Season 33 resumed production in September, a year and a half later, using a charter plane and limiting the remaining legs to Europe. Prior to the shutdown, the show completed three episodes in London and Scotland. In the two-hour season premiere of the first two legs, the 11 teams first hit London, where they must find “The Queen” and “Boris Johnson” having a nosh.

“The Amazing Race” returns for its 33rd edition on Wednesday, January 5, at 8 p.m. Et, kicking off with a disclaimer from host Phil Keoghan about this most unusual season. Variety has an exclusive first look at the opening five minutes of the two-hour premiere episode, set to air next week on CBS.
“It’s so good to be back,” Keoghan says at the start of the episode. “We know how much you have missed ‘The Amazing Race,’ and believe me, we have missed making it for you. Tonight’s episode was filmed before the outbreak of Covid-19, which prompted us to suspend shooting at the end of the third leg. I am excited to tell you that after a long break, we did finish shooting this season and once again, the world is waiting for you.”
The show then opens in the pre-pandemic times, with 11 teams at their homes across the country,...
