With more than 70 schools offering costume design instruction, what makes such a program stand out? Is it the proximity to film studios and theaters in the major entertainment hubs of L.A., London and New York? The variety of courses, from historical design to 3D fabric printing, or simply a well-rounded curriculum? Or is it the chance to network with award-winning alums and industry insiders, coupled with portfolio development and postgrad job placement?

As a result of elections that took place this year from June 5-9, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 55-person board of governors convenes in July, more than one-fifth of its seats will be occupied by people who were not a part of it in June.
This is the result not of a repudiation of incumbents — in fact, no incumbent who could have sought reelection opted not to, and no incumbent who sought reelection lost — but rather of stricter term limits that the board imposed upon itself in recent years.
For the 2023-24 term, the board — which is composed of three governors representing each of the Academy’s 18 branches except for the newly created production/technology branch, which has just one, plus three “governors at large” — will be joined by 11 rookie governors: Wendy Aylsworth (production/technology branch), David I. Actor Lou Diamond Phillips, documentary filmmaker Simon Kilmurry and writer Dana Stevens are among the 11 film professionals who have been elected to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy announced on Thursday.
Those new governors are part of a wholesale makeover of the AMPAS board prompted by new term limits imposed last year. In 10 of the 11 branches where first-time governors were elected, the incumbent governors were unable to run again because of those new limits, which restrict governors to two consecutive three-year terms. Last year, when those limits were instituted, 10 governors were termed off the board and 12 first-time governors were elected.
This year’s election means that 23 of the 55 members of the board will be in their first or second term.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced its newly elected Board of Governors. The governors, who set the Academy’s strategic vision and watch out for the organization’s financial health, will take office at the first scheduled board meeting of the new term. Wednesday the board voted to expand theatrical release requirements in order to qualify for Best Picture eligibility.
Directors branch member Ava DuVernay is back on the 55-member 2023-2024 Academy Board of Governors. So is producer Lynette Howell Taylor. The incumbents stay, while the ones who have served their three-year term move on, to be replaced by someone else. And, after three terms, like those served by Charles Bernstein and Jon Bloom, they are permanently termed off.

For the aspiring costume designer who dreams of creating looks for film, television, theater and concert stages, the journey typically starts with the right school, where a host of considerations awaits. Classroom size, location, specialized classes, participation in theater programs, job placement, networking with alums and, most important, tuition are all part of the equation. As schools meet the demands and technology of an ever-changing entertainment landscape, nothing tops a good education.
To create its annual top 10 list of costume design schools, The Hollywood Reporter consulted with costume designers and academics, looking at the critical factors — including class size, reputation and alumni success — that help make each school unique.

Perhaps co-founder Walt Disney summed it up best, having noted, “CalArts is the principal thinking I hope to leave when I move on to greener pastures.

John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things” started out as a contemporary thriller. But since it took 20 years to come to the screen, it now amounts to a period piece, says costume designer Daniel Orlandi. The film is coming to HBO Max and theaters Jan. 29, but Hancock first mentioned the project to his frequent collaborator two decades ago.
The latest from Hancock stars Denzel Washington and Rami Malek as sheriff’s deputies in the 1990s on the trail of a serial killer. Orlandi went through a number of outfits to find the look that “makes the actor feel like the character.”
The murder trail leads Washington’s character, Kern County deputy Joe “Deke” Deacon, south. “He comes to Los Angeles, and he buys an outfit from a thrift store,” Orlandi explains. Initially, the designer had suggested a work jacket with a shirt, but it was Washington who helped put Deacon’s look together.

Costume Designer Daniel Orlandi Guest Blog Day. Here's Daniel...
Growing up in New Jersey I started to sneak into Manhattan at a very young age to see Broadway shows which made me want to be a set designer. Bu it was at the movies where I fell in love with costumes. My parents both loved movies and they took me with them as it was cheaper than getting a sitter. I can watch a film as an adult and think “Oh wow that's what the film was about. Suzie Wong was a prostitute!” Movies theaters were also my Saturday afternoon activity. Mom would drop me off and pick me up after she ran her errands.

I had been preparing for the high-pressure two days of shooting at DisneyLand for several months. There were about 800 extras including 250 kids that had to be costumed and the research had been surprising. People used to actually dress up for a day in the park back in 1962. We had everyone in colorful 1960s California finery. When dressing extras I like to give everyone a character — so no souvenirs or T shirts! We found a website where people posted their old personal photos of Disneyland. That was invaluable.
We also had to dress the park employees. Recreating Disney’s 1960s walk-around characters proved even more challenging...

Bob Mackie (left) and me at the 1981 Oscars
by Daniel Orlandi
Let's start at the beginning! About a year after graduating from Carnegie Mellon a couple of college friends and I drove to La from NYC because it seemed like our friends in La were working a lot more than we were. A month later I got a call to work in Bob Mackie's shop for two days to help with a Las Vegas show. I ended up making G strings! After I finished, the head of his workroom asked me to organize all of Bob's trims and fabrics that had been neglected for awhile. I guess Bob was impressed. He was looking for an assistant on Pennies From Heaven (1981) and he hired me with no film experience at all.

Daniel Orlandi's favourite set pic... amongst the costumes of "The Da Vinci Code"
It's been awhile since The Film Experience has been hijacked for a full day by a super-talented Hollywood player. We figured it was time for another one. In the past we've handed the reins over to visiting embodiments of awesomeness like the rapidly rising writer/director Leslye Headland, and brilliant actor/writer David Dastmalchian, as well as a handful of actresses we deeply love: Missi Pyle, Ann Dowd, Melanie Lynskey, and Cara Seymour.
Our latest overlord for a full day: Costume Designer Daniel Orlandi !
Daniel with Ewan McGregor on the set of "Down with Love"Orlandi's design gigs include but are not limited to: Cinderella Man (2005), The Da Vinci Code (2006), Saving Mr Banks (2013), Jurassic World (2015), Logan (2017), and three Best Picture nominees Frost/Nixon (2008), The Blind Side (2009), and Ford V Ferrari (2019).

20th Century Fox recently revved up their Oscar campaign for “Ford v Ferrari” with a panel discussion highlighting the film’s below-the-line talent. Gold Derby was on-hand at the event, which was hosted by Gregory Ellwood (The Playlist) at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles. It featured director James Mangold, production designer Francois Audouy, costume designer Daniel Orlandi, film editors Andrew Buckland and Michael McCusker, composer Buck Sanders, sound re-recording mixer David Giammarco and casting director Ronna Kress. Listen to the full 28 minute Q&a above.

Our annual April Foolish Oscar Predictions continue
Can "Aladdin" repeat "Beauty & The Beast"'s success in Costume Design? And can we ever forgive Michael Wilkinson for making Aladdin wear a shirt for the whole movie?
The last few years of the Costume Design category have been very Powell/Atwood heavy as Oscar's two design queens have either won again (Atwood in 2016) or been double-nominated twice-over (Powell in 2015 and 2018) but it looks like we'll be taking a wee break from those much honored artists this year. Will there be any room room for first-time nominees or will we get mostly costuming regulars who could continue to march to Atwood and Powell-like status
Here's the chart (and the prediction index if you haven't been playing along). But after the jump some images to whet your appetite for the year in costuming to come...

There’s a scene in director John Lee Hancock’s film “The Highwaymen” which chronicles the astounding multi-city hunt for the infamous criminals Bonnie Parker (Emily Probst) and Clyde Barrow (Edward Bossert) by detectives Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson), that perfectly defines the story. It’s when Frank and Maney, semi-retired rangers recruited back on the scene for the high-profile case, stop inside a quaint home where they think their targets might be only to find a quintessential pencil dress and blue suit worn throughout the Great Depression hanging in the closet. “They were playing house,” Frank says.
It’s an important line because, though Frank is referring to Bonnie and Clyde’s bizarrely romantic relationship, it highlights the fact that everything about the main characters in “The Highwaymen” hinges on identity and perception. Frank is a man of a certain age who’s gotten comfortable...

Costume designer Daniel Orlandi tells us during our recent chat (listen below) that working on a biopic like "Trumbo" means diving into stacks of books first. “I like to read as much as possible especially when you’re doing a movie that’s dealing with real people that lived. I owe it to those people to be as truthful as possible within the confines of the script.” Then, he continues, “I like to work with my actors organically and see what feels right." -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions He says he found the perfect collaborator in Bryan Cranston, who plays blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. “He already knew so much about him before he even signed on. “Dalton Trumbo was an American patriot, but his defense of our freedom of speech made him a traitor in some people’s eyes,” director Jay Roach says. “One of the great questions that the film asks is how we as a country got to a place where it seemed right to send someone like Trumbo to jail and prevent him from writing.”

Wamg is giving away copies of Jurassic World to five lucky readers.
Shattering records globally, Jurassic World crushed the opening-weekend box-office, scoring the highest domestic, international and worldwide openings of all time. The film has taken in more than $1.6 billion globally to become the third-highest grossing film in history.
Now fans can experience the thrill and awe when Jurassic World arrives on Digital HD on October 1, 2015 and on 3-D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand on October 20, 2015, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
More than two decades since Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park was released, fans of the original films and new moviegoers alike can witness the story come full circle as the park that was only a promise comes to life.
Now, 22 years later, an even bigger and enormously popular attraction has risen on Isla Nubar: Jurassic World. To keep attendance high, the park operators introduce a new, genetically modified hybrid creature called Indominus Rex.

There has been an insane amount of discussion online about Bryce Dallas Howard’s character Claire Dearing since the release of Jurassic World (2015, costume designer: Daniel Orlandi), mostly concerning the ‘running in heels’ sequences. I felt it would be interesting to take a broader look at the costumes of the female leads in both Jurassic Park (1993, costume designer April Ferry) and Jurassic World and contrast in the characters.
Dr Ellie Sattler the Paleobotanist as played by Laura Dern in the original movie is a hugely underrated feminist action hero. She is allowed to be clever, brave, practical and physical yet display ‘feminine’ traits at the same time, such as fear, compassion and a nurturing nature. These are characteristics infrequently seen together in Hollywood blockbuster movies. For the bulk of the film, she wears one practical outfit: chino shorts and a baggy salmon-coloured shirt knotted at the waist with a blue high necked vest-top underneath.

“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Into the Woods” and “Inherent Vice” are among the nominees for the 16th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, the CDG announced on Wednesday.
So is “Selma,” which ended a 0-for-5 drought and picked up its first guild nomination of the year.
The guild chooses nominees in three separate categories: Excellence in Contemporary Film, Excellence in Period Film and Excellence in Fantasy Film. In recent years the Cdg has typically nominated three or four of the films that will go on to receive Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design – and in virtually every case, they’ve come...

The Costume Designers Guild joined the guild chorus Wednesday morning with a list of nominees across three categories: contemporary, period and fantasy designs. On the list, and finally joining the guild party, is "Selma" from legendary outfitter Ruth E. Carter. It's the first guild mention for the film so far and obviously a warranted one. Carter was joined on the period side by "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Inherent Vice" (yay!) and "The Theory of Everything." Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what makes "Interstellar" a contemporary film rather than a fantasy film (which is how the art directors classified it). Either way, I'm sure the team is happy to be included. I can't believe, though, that "Mr. Turner" has been excluded from both this list and the art directors'. Though it feels like this kind of thing has happened before, only to be righted by the Academy.

Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. As for the BAFTA Awards, it was Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) taking Best Supporting Actor and while Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) added another Best Actress award to...

Welcome, gorgeous people, to the biggest night in British Film. We’re here at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and we’ll be liveblogging as the night rolls on.
12 Years a Slave, Gravity, American Hustle, Captain Phillips and Philomena have the majority of nominations and are all competing for Best Picture. It is an undeniably strong year for British Film and we’re grateful for a spotlight as wide and as bright as this one to be shone this evening.
If you haven’t already checked out our BAFTA competition, do so now - the prizes are worth £700. Blimey.
We’ll be updating this liveblog minute by minute until my fingers fall off with the most recent update being shown at the top of the top so do keep refreshing.
Great to have you with us.

I had a great time at last night's Critics' Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. I'm a proud voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and I always look forward to our Movie Awards!
It was a great night with an equally great party vibe, and all the stars were relaxed as they imbibe on cocktails and eat fantastic food.
But the best part of the evening was the awards show itself (I always feel that the Critics' Choice is a much better Oscar predictor than the Golden Globes) where Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" triumphed in all the technical categories including Best Director and "12 Years a Slave" received the top honor of Best Picture with Lupita Nyong'o beating "American Hustle's" Jennifer Lawrence for the Best Supporting Actress trophy.
My favorite part of the awards show? The love given to Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor...

The critics have spoken, and 12 Years a Slave has been named Best Picture of the Year at the 19th Annual Critics' Choice Awards.
Slave beat out American Hustle, Her, Gravity, Captain Phillips, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street, Saving Mr. Banks, Inside Llewyn Davis and Dallas Buyers Club at a ceremony that came just hours after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named their nominations for this year's Oscars.
Getting off on a comedic foot, Anchorman 2 stars Christina Applegate and James Marsden presented the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Movie to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf Of Wall Street, while Amy Adams was named Best Actress in a Comedy for American Hustle, which also won the award for Best Comedy Movie.
