Chicago – When one hears the phrase “epic” in terms of classic movies, one of the first that should come to mind is the crowning achievement of Cecil B. DeMille’s obsession with storytelling with a massive scope, “The Ten Commandments,” now available on Blu-ray for the first time to coincide with the upcoming Easter holiday, when it usually plays on television to big Nielsen numbers. Put it in your best friend’s Easter basket.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
In all seriousness, this is a pretty notable release with one of the better classic movie Blu-ray transfers of the year to date. From the very beginning, as the word “Overture” splashes across a red background, “The Ten Commandments” has that undeniable HD sheen. “The Ten Commandments” is such a serious piece of work that it takes not just an overture but an introduction to the story of Moses. Even that introduction looks new in 1080p.

It should scare you that no one can definitively say that if The Ten Commandments were remade today that it wouldn’t have had a sequel in the works within a week of positive box office response. There was talks of making a sequel to The Passion of the Christ (no, I’m not joking – that idea is in fact still circling the drain of Hollywood); someone remade Ocean’s Eleven, and then, based on the fact that George Clooney and Brad Pitt just have too much chemistry to not sequel the idea into the ground, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen were made; and, for whatever reason, the long buried series of Indiana Jones was exhumed so its creators could give its corpse a good rogering. The point being, there was a time when films were made and their existence set in stone as to make them irreplaceable.

Ever wonder what stone chiseled with the divine commandments of God looks like in high definition? Wonder no longer mortal! Or at least, wonder no longer as of March 29th, when Paramount Home Entertainment releases the fully restored edition of The Ten Commandments in a Limited Edition 6-disc Blu-ray and DVD Gift Set. I for one am really hoping they did a great job with the restoration because even if the film is somewhat (okay, very) silly at times, it's one of those benchmark epic films that you really have to see at least once in your life.
Now, whether you consider The Ten Commandments or Ben Hur to be Cecil B. Demille's crowning achievement is your choice to make (personally, I say Ben Hur), but it's still a spectacle to behold either way. Filmed in Egypt and the Sinai with one of the biggest sets ever constructed for a motion picture,...
