It all started in 1988 with an obsession: Canadian comic Carolyn Taylor, now known as one of the stars and co-creators of “Baroness Von Sketch Show,” was a “closeted 15-year-old” watching Olympic figure skating in her aunt’s living room. She recalls Katarina Witt performing a free skate to “Carmen” in an iconic red costume. At the very end, Witt performatively lay down on the ice — and Taylor just wanted to lie next to her.
“It was one of those foundational moments,” Taylor tells Variety. “But then I went on with my life, and didn’t pursue skating or Olympics in any capacity.”
Fast forward to 2016. Taylor was driving in the car with her girlfriend when Whitney Houston’s 1992 song “I Have Nothing” came on the radio. “It was as if I had heard it for the first time,” she recalls. She had a vision of “a professional pairs, gold medalist skating routine,...

“Baroness von Sketch Show” star Carolyn Taylor will front a new unscripted comedy series for Canadian streaming service Crave, produced through Catalyst and Blue Ant Studios.
The six-part comedy series has been commissioned by the Bell Media-owned SVOD, and is produced by Catalyst — the Toronto-based development and funding company focusing on women-centric content — and Blue Ant Studios as part of a strategic partnership to develop female-generated programming for the global marketplace.
Taylor is best known as one of the stars and co-creators of CBC’s comedy hit “Baroness von Sketch Show,” which aired across five seasons from 2016 to 2020. Starring four female comedians, the satirical sketch comedy offered clever takedowns of contemporary culture through the female gaze. Some of the show’s most famous skits include “Private Vagina,” “Mom Says Hello” and “Not All Men.”

Peacock, whose 2020 rollout initially was predicated on the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, had to switch gears when Covid-19 forced the postponement of the Games to 2021.
On Wednesday, the NBCUniversal streaming service launched a dedicated pop-up channel with one year to go before the rescheduled start of the Tokyo Games. The 24/7 “Road to Tokyo” channel, a collaboration with NBC Olympics, is dedicated to Olympic and Paralympic history, documentaries and studio programming.
As the news of the channel went out, the atmosphere was notably less ebullient in Japan, according to press reports. A small group of organizers gathered without fans for a ceremony marking the one-year mark from the new start of the Games, but participants acknowledged a high degree of uncertainty remains. The president of the Olympic organizing committee, Yoshiro Mori, told local broadcaster Nhk that the 2021 plan would not be feasible if current rates of infection persist around the world.

Olympics recap: Jeremy Abbott's a phoenix, plus the slopestyle boys at their 5 most precious moments
There are many candidates for Thursday’s Olympic Stud of the Day, an EW.com tradition dating back to the 2008 Summer Games that honors the athlete who was the night’s biggest/coolest badass. The U.S.’s Joss Christensen, Gus Kenworthy, and Nick Goepper swept the inaugural men’s ski slopestyle event — a feat the U.S. has only accomplished twice before in Winter Olympics history. Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu became the first male figure skater to ever score above 100 points for a short program. Zhang Hong was the first Chinese speed skater to win long-track gold. But we...

The men’s figure skating event gets underway Feb. 13 in Sochi, with the free skate following Feb. 14 (both air live at 10 a.m. Et on Nbcsn before NBC’s prime-time coverage). If you’re a fan of the U.S.’s Jason Brown, you’re probably wondering if the Olympic audience could possibly be as responsive to him as the crowd at Nationals. We asked 1998 gold medalist-turned-commentator Tara Lipinski. Watch her response below.
You may already have seen Brown skate his “Riverdance” free skate in the team event at the Games. But to get the full effect, you’re going...

As figure skating continues at the Sochi Olympics — the pairs medals are decided Feb. 12, and the men take the ice again Feb. 13 and Feb. 14 — the jumps aren’t the only thing to tune in for. We asked 1998 gold medalist-turned-commentator Tara Lipinski, who’s calling all the action live on Nbcsn with Johnny Weir and Terry Gannon, what else we should be watching — and she told us to keep an eye out both for pre-skating rituals and excitable coaches. (Can we get picture-in-picture for Brian Orser?)...

This is a column for all you “I want to be a writer” writers out there.
The Xxii Olympics officially opened on Friday, February 8th, 2014 in Sochi, Russia.
Thirty years ago the Xiv Olympics took place in Sarajevo in what was Yugoslavia and is now Bosnia-Herzegovina, although the region is usually just called Bosnia. Thirty years later the Olympic village, the ice rink, the bobsled and luge tracks, the ski jump, the other sports facilities and hotels are gone, destroyed during the Bosnian war and the 44-months-long Siege of Sarajevo which killed nearly twelve thousand of the city’s residents.
Thirty years ago this week I watched and was swept away, like everyone else by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean’s romantically brilliant ice dance set to Ravel’s Boléro. (I just watched it again courtesy of YouTube, and it still captures my heart.) The routine set off a bit...

During last night’s post-show After the Catch chat, host Mike Rowe set up the clip of Cornelia Maria deckhand Freddie Maughtai telling Josh Harris he should abandon ship and be with his ailing father, Capt. Phil, by calling it one of the six-year-old series’ most honest moments. Last night’s episode added a few more to that list.
While Phil recovered from a 12-hour surgery to relieve pressure on his swelling brain, Josh, Jake, and Johnathan Hillstrand were updated on his condition. He could survive the devastating stroke, but it was going to be a long road back. Twenty-eight hours after the surgery,...

Which Is Gayer — Sex & The City 2 Or Prince Of Persia?
This week I caught screenings of Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia which was interesting as both are of gay interest and open today. But if you can only see one this weekend, which should it be? I've put together a handy analysis to help you decide!
Does it have a gay icon?
SATC2: None other than Carrie Bradshaw! Plus Liza Minnelli!
Pop: Jack Twist is in the house! Yes, it's two time AfterElton Hot 100 champion Jake Gyllenhaal!
Which is more gay? Pop gets this category. Sorry, Carrie. Brokeback Mountain trumps all.
Does it celebrate heterosexual love and reinforce heteronormativity?
SATC2: Definitely. Carrie and Big, Carrie and Aiden, Samantha and anyone male.
Pop: Its budget was $150 million. So of course, Prince Dastan falls for Tamina and they live happily ever after.

South Korea's Kim Yu-Na annihilated her own record to win gold in last night's free skate (watch), so hopefully she'll stop getting angry "emails that were not congratulations" from her countrymen. My God, the pressure on this poor, sweet girl in the elegant blue frock! Even under the assurance that a whole nation might turn its back on her, the 19-year-old essayist had seemed cool and composed every time she appeared on camera during the ladies' events -- so composed that we might not have expected that unleashing of emotion after her routine's final flourish. Yu-Na was so overcome with relief,...

Despite a brilliant skate, Japan's Mao Asada (left) finished nearly five points behind South Korea's Kim Yu-Na (middle), who broke her own world record in the short program. NBC pitted the two 19-year-olds' routines side-by-side in this crazy video. So which Brian of the 1988 Battle of the Brians is Kim? Even though silver medalist Brian Orser is Kim's own coach, the answer has to be gold-medalist Boitano. The chunky jewels on Kim's mosaic-style James Bond dress simply come far closer to the gold hardware on Boitano's blue military-style costume than anything on Asada's dress ever could. But enough about that.

The last time an American man won Olympic figure skating gold, Evan Lysacek was a toddler. That was in 1988 when Brian Boitano edged Canadian Brian Orser in the Battle of the Brians on Orser's home turf in Calgary. Twenty-two years later, the Winter Olympics are back in Canada, and Lysacek, the defending world champion, is seen as the one who can end the U.S. drought. "Scott Hamilton is a good friend of mine, and he keeps telling me that most U.S. world champions have won the Olympics," Lysacek, 24, tells TVGuide.com. "But I'm just going to do my best. I'm the type of competitor that just goes about my business and handles things when I get there." Lysacek, who finished second at nationals behind Jeremy Abbott and ahead of Johnny Weir, has his work cut out for him with a loaded international field that includes defending champion Evgeni Plushenko.

If Only There Were A Sport For Masculine Men!
New York Magazine has an article about figure skating titled "The Less Flamboyant One" with the tease "Evan Lysacek may wear feathers, but he’s not Johnny Weir. Can his Olympic bid give male figure skating a more “mainstream” reputation?"
And things only go downhill from there.
The gist of the piece is that the rivalry between U.S. figure skaters Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir is best viewed through the prism of masculinity and how being more "masculine" is seen as better for the sport, an attitude best summed up by this quote in the article from Lysacek's grandmother:
Initially, Evan wanted to do hockey. He’s not flamboyant. His goal has always been to have dads watch him skate and then see that it’s okay for their sons to do this, too. Evan’s always wanted people to...
