The massacre of Xoco is about to begin again at Cineteca Nacional! As usual, curators José Luis Ortega and Mauricio Matamoros Durán have put together a fine selection of horror films for Masacre en Xoco, Mexico City's annual celebration of genre cinema and - the now extinct from cinemas - 35mm format. The fifth edition of Masacre en Xoco is, in words of the curators, "probably the last chance to watch in 35mm important films for the genre, such as Dario Argento's The Cat o' Nine Tails and Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead."Aside of said films, Masacre en Xoco 2014 offers the chance to watch on the big screen Brian de Palma's Phantom of the Paradise and Ridley Scott's Alien, celebrating 40 and 35 years respectively....

Young Mexican horror filmmaker Lex Ortega has made a name for himself within the festival circuit, with several gory short films such as T is for Tamales and Mother's Blessing. He's also a recognized sound designer, and has worked for several international productions, like Frankenstein's Army and Late Phases. When I asked Cineteca Nacional's José Luis Ortega about Lex and the current genre cinema scene in Mexico (back in December 2013), he said, "I think he's, if not the only one, at least the top of the iceberg of a bunch of people who are recording their gore, brutal, gothic or very atmospheric movies. Lex is the only one who dares to sell his products and show them at festivals. He has a really good craft...

Now that Christmas is over, the very last film event of the year in Mexico kicks off today. I'm talking about the fourth edition of Cineteca Nacional's Masacre en Xoco, a fabulous 35mm showing of horror and genre cinema in general! This is the third and final part of the conversation I had with the curators Mauricio Matamoros and José Luis Ortega and the genre cinema expert Jorge Grajales. Here you'll find everything you need to know about the 2013 edition of Masacre en Xoco plus some thoughts on the future of the showing. Twitch: Tell me about the lineup of Masacre en Xoco 2013. José Luis Ortega (Jlo): We have as top bet a very little yet full of heart homage to the Panic...

Mexican cinema has been a very important part of each Masacre en Xoco edition and 2013 is no exception: curators Mauricio Matamoros and José Luis Ortega have ready two films by Juan López Moctezuma, a homage to Rafael Corkidi and a couple of Lex Ortega short films (Contra Natura and Mother's Blessing). Talking with Matamoros, Ortega and Jorge Grajales (who joined the interview to my pleasant surprise) was a great opportunity to discuss Mexican horror cinema beyond the movies that have been part of Masacre en Xoco. In the second part of this interview, these cinema experts discuss the current Mexican genre scene, evoke past times and eventually name which are the essential Mexican horror movies of all time. Enjoy! Twitch: Tell me about Lex...

Since 2010, Masacre en Xoco has been Cineteca Nacional's annual showing of both classic and contemporary horror cinema on 35mm (or 16mm). As we all know, digital projection has replaced celluloid and at Mexico's Cinematheque things are no different. Hence Masacre en Xoco has become the one and only opportunity for horror aficionados in Mexico City to revive or experience for the first time what is like to watch films like The Evil Dead on its original 35mm format. For the fourth edition, kicking off next week (12/26), curators Mauricio Matamoros Durán and José Luis Ortega put together another magnificent selection, which include classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Mexico City premiere of Here Comes the Devil. I had the good fortune...

Masacre en Xoco is Cineteca Nacional's annual gift to fans of genre cinema and, actually, the one and only opportunity in Mexico City to watch 35mm prints of both classic and cotemporary horror films. Curated by José Luis Ortega and Mauricio Matamoros Durán, the fourth edition of Masacre en Xoco is this year's last film event in Mexico, taking place from December 26 to 29. Masacre en Xoco 2013 is dedicated to the Panic Movement, paying special homage to El Topo and The Holy Mountain cinematographer Rafael Corkidi, who sadly passed away in September. Also, South Korea is the guest country and, as previously announced, the genre festival Feratum will share a couple of its titles: Thanatomorphose and Visceral: Between the Ropes of Madness.
