- Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in the category non-performer) on 10 March 2003.

- Under his leadership, Warner Records signed Jimi Hendrix when he was barely known outside the London club scene, Fleetwood Mac when they were still a blues band, and the Grateful Dead when their fame was limited to the Bay Area. George Harrison, Nirvana, Madonna, Van Halen, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, and Prince were among the other performers who joined Warner under Ostin.
- He dropped out of UCLA law school to manage the finances at Verve records (called Clef at the time).
