Canadian actor-brothers Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4) and Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) had their stars unveiled on Scarborough’s Walk of Fame. The men were raised in the marginalized Toronto community by a single mother who emigrated to Canada from Jamaica.
“It’s really humbling and flattering to receive something like this in my hometown, at a mall where I grew up, where I shopped, it’s pretty cool,” Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter.
The local Walk of Fame honor for the fast-rising Hollywood stars is more than an exercise in collective positive thinking for an inner-city neighborhood that earlier brought to the world celebrities like Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and The Weeknd.
The brothers are at work via their Bay Mills Studios production banner — named after the community housing project they grew up in Scarborough — on a landmark TV drama set in the inner-city community that is their home away from Hollywood.

There’s a gripping story to be told in The Boys in the Boat. Daniel James Brown’s best-seller gained acclaim for depicting how nine Depression-era boys defied the odds and inspired a nation rowing crew for the U.S. in the 1936 Olympics. It’s a tale rife with optimism and intrigue – all of which director George Clooney siphons away in this bland, rote adaptation.
It’s the middle of the Depression when Joe Rantz (Callum Turner) decides to go out for Washington’s rowing team as a way to pay for his college education. Most of the young men on the team, coached by Al Ulbrickson (Joel Edgerton), are there not because they have a passion for crew but because they simply want the paycheck. While they’re a ramshackle lot to begin with, over time the Jv crew team outshines the varsity squad and eventually wins a spot in the Olympics in Berlin,...

As promised the onslaught of 2023 sports films marches, or in this case paddles, on. Hot on the heels of last week’s historical sports drama, comes this one based on a popular book from a few years ago. It’s not about wrestling, like Friday’s flick, but it is set in the past, though nearly fifty years before the Von Erichs. But there is an Olympic connection. This one concerns a larger team of young men defying the odds and overcoming hardship to go for the gold, rather than fame and fortune.

The Boys in the Boat Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Callum Turner, Joel Edgerton
Director: George Clooney
The Boys in the Boat Movie Review Is Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: The film highlights some important moments in sports history leading up to World War II. The depiction of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin is decently thrilling. The rowing sequences feel real, given that the film cast real boat club members to make the rowing seem exciting.
What’s Bad: The direction is far too standard. There’s little room given for character growth, and Joe’s central character comes off as far too boring for a down-on-his-luck student. The pacing is way too slow, and the historical context is limply shoved into the foreground without much fascination beyond the ho-hum facts.

George Clooney’s directing career has been one of both ecstasy and agony. His bold, respected spy dramedy debut (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) was immediately followed by the incredibly lauded (and incredibly great) period drama Good Night and Good Luck. What followed was a run of more mixed fare. One film was ambitious and flawed (The Midnight Sky), one overrated (The Ides of March), one undercooked (Leatherheads), and two really didn’t work. Then came The Tender Bar in 2021, a modest piece of work featuring nuanced performances from an impressive cast. It’s an old-fashioned picture starring Ben Affleck, who offers many old-fashioned, matinee idol charms, square jaw and all. Perhaps Clooney learned something about himself as a filmmaker with The Tender Bar: he may be at his best when breathing life into fact-based drama and not trying to be too cute about it.

The 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany were about more than sports. The world was still mired in the Great Depression, and faced the prospect of a second world war as fascism flourished throughout Europe. As such, there couldn't have been a worse time for Berlin to host the games. They gave Hitler a global platform to espouse his white supremacist views, and he vigorously exploited the opportunity by putting on an Aryan spectacle that made him look like the god emperor of the greatest (and whitest) country on Earth.
And so it was important for the free-ish world to trounce Hitler's athletes whenever possible. When we look back on the games now, the first figure that comes to mind is African-American track-and-field prodigy Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals as Hitler fumed from his box in his imposing, 100,000-seat Olympiastadion. But there were other triumphs, one of the most notable being the U.

The director lays on the strident messaging in this clunky film, all about the gutsy underdogs of the US rowing team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
George Clooney has been a charming and dapper Anglophile presence on the awards circuit this season while promoting the new movie he’s directed, some of which was shot not far from where he lives near Henley-on-Thames. So it’s sad to report that his film clunks harder than redwood. It is a stodgy and sententious varsity-sports underdog drama from the Depression era, a bit like his 1920s American football film Leatherheads, from 2008, but minus the comedy. Weirdly, it is as if this earnest but perfunctorily imagined film is always ordering us to feel nostalgic and sentimental about a time and place of which no one involved can have any real memory or feeling.

If the day ever arrives when a smart director decides to make “Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story,” he should seriously consider casting Callum Turner, the dreamy raw-boned star of George Clooney’s period rowing drama “The Boys in the Boat.” Turner, who is British (he’s best known for his role in the last two “Fantastic Beasts” films), has the dark-eyed, purse-lipped, lock-jawed scowl of Springsteen the working-class prince — even though Bruce, as he admitted in his one-man Broadway show, totally trumped up his proletarian roots. He was a middle-class kid from Jersey palming himself off as a kind of roughneck factory worker of the soul. In “The Boys in the Boat,” Turner, playing the pivotal member of the 1936 University of Washington crew team, exudes the same duality.

‘The Boys in the Boat’ Review: George Clooney’s Inspirational Crew Drama Is Too Hokey to Stay Afloat
You have to admire George Clooney’s unwavering dedication to making the kind of movies that feel like they could’ve been — should’ve been — the fourth-highest-grossing new release of a sleepy weekend in the Clinton era. It takes real star power to keep churning these things out, and rare chutzpah to insist they all play in theaters.
Indeed, Clooney’s side hustle might seem arrogant if the films themselves weren’t so humble and unassuming. Besotted with a vision of Hollywood that was already gone when he got there, the guy has always been a living anachronism who just keeps turning the clock back 35 years until he finally runs out of time. That used to mean channeling the spirit of Dean Martin. Now it means trying to bring Jerry Goldsmith back from the dead.

Hollywood is full of inspiring sports-themed movies, especially those focused on underdogs who rise to the occasion. But films about rowing teams are few and far between — until now. Director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat is a gorgeous adaptation of the Depression-era story of a group of poor but scrappy young men who find a slice of glory when they become the USA’s choice to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It is, to use a well worn cliché, a stand-up-and-cheer tale if ever there was one.
But the primary reason to cheer is the kind of unspoken underlying message within, that this is a sport where it is imperative that everyone in the boat rows as one, in unison and together physically and psychologically. This makes The Boys in the Boat not just enormously entertaining, but also important and relevant to our current world that is more divided,...

The biggest story of the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin was Black track and field star Jesse Owens winning four gold medals and putting the lie to Adolf Hitler’s theories of race supremacy. A less-heralded U.S. gold medal triumph over host country Nazi Germany glides onto screens this Christmas with The Boys in the Boat from MGM Amazon Studios, directed by George Clooney.

Juul will produce the show under his banner No Fat Ego, along with associate producers in the U.S., U.K. and Germany.
The limited series, which has not been titled yet, will tell the story of Dassler’s rise to the sports good business from a little German village and his reign and monopoly in the industry. Adidas founder Adi Dassler is getting the Hollywood treatment with a new limited series in development from independent film producer Niels Juul and Ad Legacy, the company founded by his grandchildren.
The project — which will be told from the perspective of Dassler’s oldest daughter Inge and produced by Juul’s company No Fat Ego — will focus on Dassler’s life and the iconic sports and fashion brand he created from his small German village. It will also capture the intense family drama and rivalry between Dassler and his brother Rudolf, who created Puma.
Juul described the limited series as a “creative intersection” between “The Crown” and “Succession.”
“I am a big fan of real-life stories, and as much as I liked Enzo Ferrari’s tale, I was immediately drawn to the story of Adi. It’s a great dramatic, intense and brutal tale but also at times hilariously funny...

Killers of the Flower Moon & Ferrari executive producer Niels Juul has teamed with Ad Legacy, the company set up by the grandchildren of adidas founder Adi Dassler, to develop a fictional limited series about the life of Dassler and the megabrand he created.
Described by Juul as a cross between The Crown and Succession, the project will be seen through the eyes of Dassler’s oldest daughter Inge. It tells the mesmerizing tale of one family man’s uncompromising passion for sports and his obsession through innovation to give all athletes — no matter their gender, race or nationality — the best possible tools to win. It also tells the story of an intense family drama and split between two brothers that ultimately led to one of the longest running brand rivalries in history – as Dassler’s brother Rudolf created Puma.

4th Update, Oct 16: Casey Wasserman is the latest Hollywood heavyweight to speak out in support of Israel.
“There is no justification for this,” the Wasserman chairman-ceo – and chairman of the L.A. 2028 committee – reportedly said at an International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai on Monday. “I unequivocally stand in solidarity with Israel, but let me be clear I also stand with the innocent civilians in Gaza who did not choose this war.”
Referencing the terrorist kidnapping of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Games, Wasserman continued, “Unfortunately, the Olympics are not immune to the world we live in.
“At its worst, it is a platform for hate to express itself on the stage and we will always remember the 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team who were taken hostage and murdered in Munich.
“But at its best it is an opportunity for sport to show the world a better path with peace and unity,...

The New York Times best-seller Lore (get it Here), written by Alexandra Bracken, is set to receive the film adaptation treatment from Universal, The Hollywood Reporter informs us. Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal is producing the film, and Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse – whose previous credits include G.I. Joe Origins: Snake Eyes, the Jesse Owens movie Race, Netflix’s Rebecca, and Amazon Studio’s Jean Seberg movie Seberg – have been hired to write the screenplay.
Bracken’s writings previously inspired the 2018 film The Darkest Minds.
Described as “Hunger Games meets Greek mythology”, Lore tells the story of Lore Perseous whose family was murdered as a part of the Agon, a divine hunt that occurs every seven years as punishment for a past rebellion by nine Greek gods, who are forced to walk the earth as mortals and be hunted. Jason Sudeikis is arguably most recognized now for his award-winning work in the acclaimed Apple TV+ series "Ted Lasso," but the actor had a strong start in the entertainment industry before that. In 2003, he started working as a writer for "Saturday Night Live," and he went on to work on the beloved live comedy show as both an actor and writer for the next 10 years before his departure in 2013. After he gained popularity on "SNL," Sudeikis appeared in other shows, including "30 Rock" from 2007 to 2010 and "The Cleveland Show," which he voice acted for from 2009 to 2013.
Following his success on TV, Sudeikis turned his attention to movies, notably starring in comedies like "Horrible Bosses" alongside Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman, "The Campaign," and "We're the Millers" in the early 2010s. Along with his comedic performances, the actor also has taken on roles in indie films like "Sleeping With Other People,...

The phrase "Hand of God" made famous by Diego Maradona, in what is termed in a very loose way, somehow always seems to find itself blessing the legends of the sport. Messi, the champion footballer, was the one to receive it when most required at this World Cup. Argentina was one of the favourite sides not only because of the way they play the game of football but also because one wished Messi to win it for his immense contribution to the sport.
They did so in splendid style and richly deserved it.
Argentina’s success was a good example of the uncertainty that sports bring to the table. The football world was shocked when they lost their opening match of the World Cup to Saudi Arabia. Argentina, thereafter, needed to win both their matches to qualify. However, the loss put a shadow of doubt on their ability. Champions, they say,...

Today, Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" is mostly remembered and still revered for the groundbreaking Oscar-nominated visual effects from Phil Tippett's Tippett Studio and Sony Pictures Imageworks (Spi). Losing the Oscar to James Cameron's "Titanic," the incredibly self-aware space epic has stayed in the public consciousness mostly due to the biting satire and enduring soap opera appeal that Verhoeven and the chiseled actors injected into the film. Based on Robert Heinlein's overtly pro-war book of the same name, Verhoeven and his writing partner Ed Neumeier took what they had learned making the dystopian action classic "Robocop" and applied it to their overblown version of "Starship Troopers."
Plans of making a big-budget parody of a sci-fi action blockbuster became even more apparent with the casting of Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards, two classically beautiful actors that looked like they walked out of the pages of a comic book.

When Old 97’s singer Rhett Miller was a kid in the Seventies, he worshipped Roger Staubach, the quick-on-his-feet quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Staubach was so much of a figure in Miller’s life that he even haunted his subconscious.
He remembers vividly a surreal dream he had one humid day as a nine-year-old while on a family vacation in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Hearing him describe it, it sounds like something out of a Fellini film.
“I can remember to this day what it looked like,” he tells Rolling Stone.

Injustice: Gods Among Us was a bit of a surprise hit video game – a successful fighting game with an engaging story from the people who gave the world the S-Tier cartoonish gore of the Mortal Kombat franchise. It was then turned into an even bigger surprise: a creatively and financially successful tie-in comic that massively expanded the universe of the game, telling the story of the five years preceding the game and bringing in multiple Lantern corps, magic users, and gods from DC’s mythical universe. DC has decided to follow up on that popularity with another expansion.
Injustice: Year Zero is a digital first book from the team that nailed the original series: Tom Taylor writing, with Rogê Antônio, Cian Tormey, Rain Beredo and Wes Abbott on art. The first three chapters are available now on Comixology. The series also has cover art from Eisner-nominated Julian Totino Tedesco.

“Clinical Exploitation”
By Raymond Benson
There have always been what have been termed in the motion picture industry “exploitation films,” even back in the silent days. The late 1930s and much of the 1940s, however, saw a deluge of cheap, not-even-“B” pictures made, usually independently of Hollywood and marketed in guerilla fashion as “educational” adult fare. You know the type. Reefer Madness. Child Bride. Marihuana.
In the 40s, especially in the wake of World War II, the Baby Boomer phenomenon was just beginning, and there was a need for sexual hygiene education for young people—at least, that’s what the makers of these tawdry movies told the public. There most certainly was a necessity for Sex Ed in schools—and some legitimate companies stepped up to the plate to create “clinical” material shown to gender-segregated classrooms dealing with the facts of life, menstruation, and venereal disease. I can...

Andrew Horn, the music documentary filmmaker for We Are Twisted F**king Sister, the story of the world’s greatest bar band and its struggle to reach the big time, has died. He was 66 years old and passed from cancer in Berlin, according to friend Rebecca Lieb.
Horn wrote, directed and produced the 2014 documentary about Twisted Sister, a band that dominated the New York/New Jersey metropolitan clubs, but couldn’t get signed by a major record label. Its unique combination of hard rock and visual spectacle finally broke through in the heavy metal era of the 1980s, the band releasing the multi-platinum Stay Hungry on Atlantic Records. The album was fueled by its MTV video for the anthemic song, We’re Not Gonna Take It..

Set in a near-future dystopia that seems to be getting better, Alternis begins when Tandy Kahananui realizes that someone is poaching her data rations, cutting into the time she's spending developing the Mmorpg that she's been working on for a decade. But it's not just her data—it's her whole world that has been stolen.

Stephan James is campaigning for Best Actor Oscar honors for his breakthrough role in the upcoming drama “If Beale Street Could Talk.” That could be a challenge for an actor so young — he’ll only be 25-years-old on Oscar nominations morning, which would make him the seventh youngest nominee of all time. But if any voters are concerned about his experience, he has already been working for years, and they can also see him this fall in a second starring role in Amazon’s “Homecoming.”
The streaming series stars James as Walter Cruz, a soldier being treated for post traumatic stress disorder at a facility run by a possibly misguided therapist (Julia Roberts). The first season of the series premiered on November 2 and was acclaimed by critics, with James singled out for his “innate warmth,” “easy charisma” and seemingly “effortless” acting choices.

Jim Carrey is returning to television this week as the star of Showtime’s half-hour series “Kidding,” but that doesn’t mean he’ll be giving up his role as a painter any time soon. The comedian reacted to Nike’s decision to make Colin Kaepernick the face of its new “Just Do It” advertising campaign by publishing a portrait of the athlete kneeling during the national anthem and celebrating Nike for its controversial decision.
“Thank you, Nike, for just doing it,” Carrey wrote in the caption accompanying the painting. The image contextualizes Kaepernick’s kneeling to other historic moments featuring black athletes, including Jesse Owens’ appearance at the 1936 Olympics in Germany and the U.S. Olympic athletes who raised their fists at the 1968 Mexico City games.
Carrey’s painting arrived just hours after Donald Trump, a usual subject of ridicule in Carrey’s artwork, took to Twitter to slam Nike for its decision.
