Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

Ever since “Reacher: Season One” hit the streamiverse (is that a word?), fans have been speculating and salivating about the arrival of the next of Lee Childs’ 28 Reacher novels to provide the source material for another round with their icon. Season One was based on the first and included the childhood part of Reacher’s backstory that shaped his values. This one is based on the 11th, Bad Luck and Trouble, which seems apt for the medium, despite being out of sequence. This one shows us the strong military ties and allegiances, explaining more about his character and skills.
For those who’ve only seen the Tom Cruise Reacher movies, prepare for a major tone shift. Alan Ritchson is a laconic, focused hulk who is supposedly much truer to the Jack Reacher of the novels than the diminutive and perkier Mr. Cruise. I advise starting with Season One, since some...

If you expected “Gen V” to be as subversive, perverse and brilliant as “The Boys,” only more sophomoric, you won’t be disappointed.
Prime Video’s college-set spin-off of TV’s smartest, sickest superhero show brings adolescent angst to the paranoid world powered by the chemical/military/supes entertainment conglomerate, Vought International. The show is centered on young people who were dosed at birth with the company’s extra-human abilities generating Compound V studying at Godolkin University. Everyone calls the place God U, where they either major in crime fighting or brand management.
Extracurricular concerns include social media notoriety, gender dysphoria, lost siblings, cutting, bulimia, suicide and the perennial parents who suck (as do most other adults). “Gen V” puts sci-fi spins on these and other youth-adjacent issues, which generates kooky but sometimes clever and resonant metaphors.
There’s also, of course, all the hooking up, getting wasted, uncontrolled outbursts...

Blood and penises. Penises and blood. No, this isn’t a very bad advertisement for erectile dysfunction pills, or history’s tersest anatomy lesson; they’re two recurring elements from “The Boys,” Amazon Prime Video’s satiric superhero show that’s absolutely infatuated with red bodily fluid and unboxing a record number of dicks. (Some may even call them the series’ visual motifs.) Developed by Eric Kripke, the Emmy-nominated action-comedy — about a group of corporatized superheroes whose heroic public image hides dark secrets galore — makes its bloody mark in the first scene and fills subsequent scenes, episodes, and seasons with a growing number of (growing) dongs.
Along the way, it also happens to go hard against capitalism, right-wing extremism, and toxic masculinity. “The Boys,” never a one-note joke, creates satire that can be mercilessly blunt and surprising in its resonance. All that blood helps audiences see superheroes in a new...

Kim Kardashian has entered the “AHS” universe.
On Wednesday, the reality star made her debut in the premiere of “American Horror Story: Delicate”, and her performance is already controversial.

“Tell [them] to suck my c**t!” Kardashian says when she first shows up, setting the tone for her performance.
Critic Coleman Spilde, writing for The Daily Beast, said, “Her affected line readings and familiar face might make it hard to take the show completely seriously, but that’s exactly what ‘AHS’ needs: a season that has given up on trying to be anything more than good, campy fun.”
In the series, Kardashian plays Siobhan, the publicist for Emma Roberts’ Anna, a former CW star turned indie movie favourite.
USA Today critic Patrick Ryan said that Kardashian “cleverly leans into that Valley girl persona.”

Prime Video’s The Boys spinoff, Gen V, explores how young superheroes learn to handle their special abilities. It’s not like they can practice setting themselves on fire or altering their size at a normal high school, so these budding superhero superstars attend Godolkin University. (Think Hogwarts but for supes.)
Prime Video promises this spinoff will retain the dark humor of The Boys while focusing on the next generation of supes.
“I think part of the thing that audiences love is that they’re taking the piss out of all of the exhaustive superhero explorations that we’ve seen and turning it all on its head,” explained Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios in an interview with EW. “But I actually think they’ve done it so well that they have earned the right to expand and explore. So, the same irreverence that The Boys has is in Gen V.

Losers' Club, watch out: Bill Skarsgård's nightmarish new take on Pennywise is featured in a frightening photo from the upcoming It movie that's based on the epic 1986 novel of the same name by Stephen King.
Unveiled by EW, the new photo from It features the ancient evil of the small town of Derry in one of its favorite forms: Pennywise the clown, who was previously played by Tim Curry in the 1990 It miniseries and is portrayed by Bill Skarsgård in the big screen version.
It is planned as a two-movie adaptation, with the first film following the Losers’ Club as kids facing evil incarnate in the small town of Derry in the 1980s, with the second movie expected to focus on the Losers’ Club as adults once again tasked with defeating the malevolent entity that haunts their hometown… and their souls.
Andrés Muschietti (Mama) directs It from a screenplay he wrote with Gary Doberman.

The three-year run of Hannibal, one of the most visually and narratively innovative series ever to air on television, broadcast or cable, came to a breathtaking conclusion Saturday night. I have already confessed to a bit of selfish melancholy that there will be no more surprises, no more opportunities to get lost in the show’s radical approach to reimagining Thomas Harris’s well-known and well-trodden scenarios, and no more sweet, agonized anticipation over what form the show, probably the most envelope-pushing of any network show ever aired, might take in its own becoming. But I must also confess that I couldn’t be more satisfied with the way Hannibal, all three seasons now fully unveiled, was orchestrated to a beautifully modulated finish that illustrated the truly expressive and even transcendent (of the limitations of a more audience-friendly, more comfortingly linear structure and tone) achievement of Bryan Fuller’s series.

Mads Mikkelsen in "Hannibal"Photo: NBC Wait... so she really did throw him from the trainc The fifth episode of this third season of "Hannibal", titled "Contorno", was a weird one for me. For one I appreciate the fact we're all caught up, but at the same time I don't feel as if aspects of what we're dealing with entirely work. That said, once Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) gets rolling it's impossible to say anything negative about this show, as you'd much rather just sit back and watch. This week's episode begins with Will (Hugh Dancy) and Chiyo (Tao Okamoto) heading to Florence to hunt Hannibal. Their scenes are overly dramatic and begin spelling things out we are already more than aware of. Chiyo says to Will, "If you don't kill him, you are worried you are going to become him." Is anyone not clear on this yetc In fact, scratch that,...

Gina Torres and Lawrence Fishburne in "Hannibal"Photo: Brooke Palmer / NBC It felt like tonight's episode of "Hannibal" would have been better served as the first or second episode in the season, not the fourth as most everything it covered was pretty much well established to this point. It wasn't a bad episode by any means, it merely seemed to stop the season in its tracks. Perhaps, however, that's a good thing, offering anyone that wasn't up-to-date a chance to play catch up while offering fans (or #Fannibals as has become the popular Twitter hashtag following the show's cancellation at NBC) an emotionally charged episode as Jack (Lawrence Fishburne) finally must say goodbye to Bella (Gina Torres) and Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas) makes a strong first appearance in this third season. Serving as a prequel to everything that's taken place so far this year, the fourth episode of this third season,...

Mads Mikkelsen in "Hannibal"Photo: Brooke Palmer / NBC I can't be certain on this, but was last week's episode the first episode of "Hannibal" to not include someone's deathc I only ask because this week's episode, titled "Secondo" made up for that missing aspect of last week's episode as not one, but two characters find themselves on the wrong side of pointy objects. This marks the third episode of this third season to be directed by Vincenzo Natali and he's toned down his visual flair here, though he's still fond of reflections, be they in knives or liquid, using them to move from one scene to the next. Though, can we all agree the best scene transition was from the cutting of a bird's leg to the chopping of a human hand as Hannibal prepares the forearm of the late professor Sogliato (Rinaldo Rocco) into a delectable carpaccio(c) to...

Last week's season three premiere episode of "Hannibal" ended with the image of what appeared to be Anthony Dimmond's bloody torso on display opposite the imagery of Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) folding Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man into the shape of a human heart. In the second episode of season three, titled "Primavera", we get a closer look at what exactly Hannibal has done as Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) arrives in Italy, for reasons, and argue, even he isn't entirely sure of. But I don't want to get too far ahead, let's circle back to the very beginning of the episode. "Primavera" dedicates it's first seven-and-a-half minutes to the season two finale, after which we find Will in the hospital, presumably four months or so after the bloody events that took place at Hannibal's and I have to admit, as soon as I saw Abigail (Kacey Rohl) walk into...

Mads Mikkelsen in "Hannibal"Photo: Brooke Palmer / NBC The season three premiere of "Hannibal", titled "Antipasto" is exactly what you'd expect based on that title, an appetizer (albeit an explosive one), teasing you for the main meal of what is the venture into all new territory for the dark and murderous series. When we last left the story, Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) walked out his front door on a dark and rainy night, the victor (depending on how you look at it) in a bloody battle. Jack (Lawrence Fishburne) was left bleeding out in the pantry, Alana (Caroline Dhavernas) seemingly paralyzed after being pushed from Hannibal's upstairs window and a severely injured Will (Hugh Dancy) was gasping for breath, staring at the corpse of Abigail Hobbs (Kacey Rohl). And just before the season two finale came to an end we see Hannibal and Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) aboard a plane flying to Europe.

Last night I re-watched the final episodes of "Hannibal" season two, just to get reacquainted with the show, the characters and the mood of it all. NBC has made available to press the first three episodes of the upcoming third season, premiering June 4 (10-11 p.m. Et), and while I've already watched the season premiere (twice) I didn't want to go any further before writing a look back at the last season so as to approach it with virtually the same mindset as everyone else so as not to offer too many hints as to what's to come, but more a tease of what you can expect from the first episode of this third season. So, the question to begin with, I guess, is what do we knowc At the end of the second season we saw the bloody battle between Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen), Jack (Lawrence Fishburne), Alana (Caroline Dhavernas...

After seven steady years of jaw-crunching, bear-trap-infused sequels, the "Saw" franchise has finally — well, allegedly — come to a close with the release of the final chapter, titled "Saw 3D."
Jigsaw's last stand drew the attention of horror lovers nationwide for a first-place finish, but the seventh "Saw" failed to capture the success of its predecessors.
"Saw 3D" managed only $22.5 million this weekend, with an additional $1.7 million earned at midnight showings last Thursday, despite the allure of 3-D technology and the promise of resolving the legacy of the murderous Jigsaw. The film's performance was enough to guarantee its status as the weekend's winner, but it currently stands as the series' third-lowest opening weekend just ahead of the first "Saw" and last year's "Saw VI,...

Betsy Russell, Saw 3D Directed by Kevin Greutert, Saw 3D debuted with "an underwhelming" $11m on Friday, including a not very impressive $1.7m from Thursday midnight screenings, according to Nikki Finke's early, rough estimates posted at Deadline.com. For the Halloween weekend, Saw 3D — 3D surcharges notwithstanding — is expected to take in $28m. That's less than Saws 2-5 earned on their first weekend, but more than Saw VI earned during its entire run ($27.69m.) Paranormal Activity 2 was no. 2 with about $6.4m on Friday, and an estimated $18.5m for the weekend. Bruce Willis-Helen Mirren's Red, Johnny Knoxville's Jackass 3D, and Clint Eastwood-Matt Damon's Hereafter followed on Friday with $3.4m, $3m, and $2m respectively. Remember, those are early, rough estimates. Official studio estimates will be released Saturday morning. Photo: Brooke Palmer / Lionsgate.

Chicago – Betsy Russell possibly made one of the greatest feature film debut moments in movie history. In the early VHS and cable days, no one can ever forget her epic horse ride in “Private School.” It’s great to have Betsy back, adding her legacy to the incredibly successful “Saw” horror franchise, this time in “Saw 3D.”
Russell was a quintessential California girl from San Diego and was born into a family of intellectuals and educators. Her father, Richard Russell, is one of the most sought after economic/Dow Jones theorists, and her grandfather was the author and liberal lion Max Lerner. Russell added to that famous lineage by shooting her first commercial at 16 years old, and moving on to Hollywood to pursue acting full-time shortly thereafter.
