I always feel compelled to begin by stating for the record that Glenn Ganges is not Kevin Huizenga. Of course, he’s not Ganges the same way Sal Paradise is not Jack Kerouac — the old fictional yes-but-no-but-yes two-step.
Ganges has been a main character in most of Huizenga’s books I’m aware of: Gloriana and The Wild Kingdom and Curses . No wait. I don’t mean “main.” I mean “viewpoint.”
That may sound like a nitpick. Describing the stories of Kevin Huizenga will lead to a lot of nitpicks, and descriptions of nitpicks, though — it’s inherent in the territory. Glenn Ganges is a man living in a secondary American city, married to Wendy, and working some kind of tech-adjacent office job.
But the reader gets the sense that Ganges is mentally an avatar for Huizenga. Huizenga’s comics are about thoughts more than actions, ruminations more than activity,...

Take a look @ new images of actress Kristen Stewart, posing for the Spring 2017 issue of "V" fashion magazine, photographed by Mario Testino:
Aside from "Twilight", Stewart is noted for director Walter Salles' R-Rated dramatic feature "On The Road", executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola.
The indie film adapts author Jack Kerouac's 'beat generation' novel "On The Road".
"...following the death of his father, struggling young writer 'Sal Paradise' embarks upon a journey across America with his friend and hero, 'Dean Moriarty'...
"...a traveler, mystic and the living epitome of 'beat'..."
Cast of "On The Road" also includes Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Alice Braga, Elisabeth Moss, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams. The story is based on the years Kerouac spent travelling the Us in the 1940's with his friend Neal Cassady and several other figures who would go on to fame in their own right,...

Kristen Stewart 'On the Road' dancing, with Garrett Hedlund on the right Down memory lane: Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart 'On the Road' images At the time best known as The Twilight Saga's conflicted human Bella Swan, Kristen Stewart was cast as the exuberant Marylou in Walter Salles' film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's iconic 1950s novel On the Road. Salles had been impressed with Stewart's pre-Twilight work in Sean Penn's Into the Wild. Based on LuAnne Henderson, Kerouac's close buddy Neal Cassady's first wife, Marylou is described as a "beautiful little sharp chick." Apparently, one who also likes to move seductively to the sound of music – as can be attested by the Kristen Stewart picture above, which first came out online in early 2011. Besides Stewart, On the Road also features Garrett Hedlund – at the time best known for Tron: Legacy – as Dean Moriarty,...

A few weeks ago, we reported that Fox had narrowed the pool of candidates for the role of Doctor Doom in its Fantastic Four reboot to four actors: Sam Riley, Eddie Redmayne, Domnhall Gleeson and Toby Kebbell. Now, it appears that we have a winner, with news that Kebbell has been officially offered the part.
The casting comes as somewhat of a surprise, considering Kebbell is the least known of all the candidates, with mostly minor supporting roles (in everything from War Horse to Wrath of the Titans) to his name. All the other actors in consideration have at least had lead roles before; Riley starred as Sal Paradise in Beat biopic On the Road, Redmayne played Marius in Les Miserables and starred in My Week with Marilyn as filmmaker Colin Clark, and Gleeson had a big hit last fall with About Time. Certain written works notoriously avoid being turned into successful films: "War and Peace," "Gravity’s Rainbow," basically anything by William Faulkner (exempting the screenplay he wrote for "The Big Sleep") and "The Great Gatsby," as Baz Luhrmann's attempt this year recently reconfirmed. Jack Kerouac has been part of this sequestration – until now. The past 12 months have seen the release of two Kerouac adaptations: Walter Salles' "On the Road" in December of last year, followed by Michael Polish's "Big Sur" this Friday. Additionally, "Kill Your Darlings," which opened earlier this month, is based on the true story of a murder within Kerouac’s proto-Beat clique during the early stirrings of that movement. It's understandable why Kerouac has eluded cinematic adaptation. He was king of the Beats, immortalized in his own characters Sal Paradise and Jack Duluoz, founder of a literary movement, creator of an aesthetic style, and perpetrator...

Garrett Hedlund is living proof that, no matter how blank and dumb a given hunky actor may seem at first, he might deserve a second shot (call it the Channing Tatum Wait-and-See). Hedlund went from nobody to plastered all over billboards in Times Square when he was cast as motorcycle-riding Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy. Even for a movie that was mostly about its special effects Hedlund was a black hole of charisma, and I was totally ready to write him off until he showed up and surprised me in On The Road, playing the incredibly charismatic Dean Moriarty opposite Sam Riley's admiring Sal Paradise. Hedlund has more to show us than his lightcycle-riding skills, and he's aiming to show us soon. Exactly how he'll show us is a little unclear, but there's potential abound in Unbroken, which Variety reports has added Hedlund to its cast. Angelina Jolie is...

"The Place Beyond the Pines"
What's It About? In "A Place Beyond the Pines" Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") weaves together three vignettes starring Ryan Gosling as a bleach blonde, motorcycle-riding bank robber, Eva Mendes as a tough single mother, and Bradley Cooper as a conflicted cop. The first part of the film follows Luke (Gosling) as he robs banks to support his unexpected child and to win back the mother Romina (Mendes). Halfway through "Pines" breaks off to tell the story of Avery (Cooper), a wounded cop who discovers corruption in his department.
Why We're In: While "Pines" breaks off suddenly in various directions, the film's audacious screenplay and structure are what make it so powerful and compelling. Cianfrance's drama is one of novelistic proportions and definitely worth its long running time.

Chicago – The 1957 novel “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac, was a missile across the bow of American social conventions, and a precursor to the radical 1960s. For over fifty years, it has eluded a film adaptation, until director Walter Salles (“The Motorcycle Diaries”) found the way to capture it.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
It is a reverential depiction, with all the familiar characters from the novel springing to life. And that is the key word here…life. This adaptation is life itself, which is what the novel embraces. Somehow, by just indulging in the characters and their lifeblood, Walter Salles – in partnership with his screenwriter Jose Rivera – was able to understand what makes this story tick. It is about youth, discovery and the consequences regarding all of that. It is about the relationship between two kindred souls, not part of a lost generation, but part of everything that is discovered when challenging the society they are born into.

★★☆☆☆ Following the success of Walter Salles and Jose Rivera's last collaboration, 2004 Guevara biopic The Motorcycle Diaries, the duo set about tackling Jack Kerouac's apparently 'unfilmable', revered Beat Generation bible On the Road. Starring Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart, as well as a plethora of recognisable supporting cameos, Salles' elegantly-shot adaptation captures the beauty of the open road, yet fails to traverse its source material's rambling and incredibly conceited methodology. Riley plays Kerouac's fictional cipher Sal Paradise, a young writer living in post-war America, struggling to find inspiration.

On The Road can best be likened to one of the highways and byways traversed by the characters in the movie: long, meandering, occasionally hazardous, long, full of interesting sights and sounds, and long.
Fortunately it’s not the interminable sort of long one encounters in a movie like The Master or 30 Minutes or Less, in which you’re hoping, begging for the projector to break or there to be a fire or an asteroid that strikes the theater, anything to save you from seeing the rest of the movie. Watching Sal Paradise and his pals bounce from place to place across the United States, you are just occasionally struck by the thought “Wait, is this actually going anywhere?”

In a new interview, Kristen reveals that ‘it’s fun to have freedom’ in acting, and how over-thinking things can make you mess up. Is her art imitating her life?
Kristen Stewart had a tough year in 2012, because she nearly lost her relationship with Robert Pattinson over her summer affair with her married director Rupert Sanders. Kristen gave a poignant interview to Elle magazine before her affair was revealed, where she said that she her “life is so f**king perfect”, and she was waiting for “someone to f**k me over.” People immediately assumed that she was tempting fate. Now in a new interview released on Jan. 17, Kristen talks about filming On The Road, and she reveals how it’s “fun to have freedom and have, like, happy accidents” and how she was afraid she would “regret this entire experience.” Is Kristen’s work starting to reflect her troubled love life?...

Directed by Walter Salles ("Central Station," "The Motorcycle Diaries."), Riley takes on the lead character in this adaptation of the semi-autobiographical work by Kerouac. Portraying a well-known, beloved literary character from a critically acclaimed novel in a film adaptation is taunting task for many actors, particularly for those who were unfamiliar with the book before shooting began. But Sam Riley, who plays Sal Paradise in the new movie ‘On the Road,’ and hadn’t read the classic 1957 book of the same name by Jack Kerouac that the drama’s based on, easily took on the task of discovering the unknown to his character. In a new interview with Indiewire, Stewart said that though those sex scenes are difficult to watch, they fit in with the film as a whole.
"To be honest, I think if you were to isolate the scenes, it’s fairly ridiculous watching yourself fake have sex," she said. "But within the movie, watching the movie, I do get so caught up in this one. I’ve seen it three times, and that’s not typical for me. I have to complete the process, I need to watch the movie at the end of it."

Walter Salles and Jose Rivera’s adaptation of On the Road begins with the sound of one quick breath, and it’s hard not to read the movie that follows as occurring within the space of the next one. Fast, almost too fast, their film of Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel is a dizzying cinematic corollary to the writer’s rhythmic, free-flowing prose. On the Road has its problems, but at times it’s hard not to feel like you’re witnessing a glorious magic trick: a movie that does some basic level of justice to one of the most unfilmable of American literary masterworks.Kerouac’s book was as much a veiled autobiography as a dazzling, stream-of-consciousness tightrope-walk, and in Salles and Rivera’s telling, the actors here are playing the real-life figures as much as they’re playing the fictional alter egos. As Sal Paradise (the Kerouac stand-in), Sam Riley,...

2012 has been quite a year for Kristen Stewart: the epic "Twilight Saga" came to an end, she's showing her boobs in another film, and she's dealt with tabloid dramz in her relationship with R.Pattz. Still, it seems nothing brings this girl down.
It's hard to believe the 22-year-old actress really did anything before she signed on as Bella Swan just a few years ago. But we know better than that. Her breakout role came at 12-years-old as Jodie Foster's daughter in "Panic Room," and that was only the beginning.
In "On the Road," out this weekend, Stewart takes the passenger seat for a cross-country trip with Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley in a film based on Jack Kerouac's novel of the same name. Many have tried to adapt Jack Kerouac’s epochal Beat classic On the Road into a movie over the years. But Walter Salles is the only director who succeeded. The Brazilian filmmaker (The Motorcycle Diaries, Central Station) has turned making road movies into something of a career endeavor, and his new film, starring Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kirsten Dunst, and Kristen Stewart, takes Kerouac’s freewheeling prose and turns it into a similarly freewheeling movie. But it’s also one that expands the novel a bit, incorporating aspects of the real-life figures who inspired the characters. (The characters of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, as many readers know, were based on Kerouac and fellow Beat writer-muse Neal Cassady.) The director spoke to Vulture about his connection to Kerouac’s novel, his unorthodox ways of shooting the film, and what it felt like to hold a replica of “the Scroll,” the legendary 120-foot,...

On The Road was originally reviewed as part of our Tiff 2012 coverage. Plot: The adventures of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer on a cross-country odyssey, who hooks up with an enigmatic drifter named Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund). Review: Walter Salles’ big screen version of Jack Kerouac’s On The Road hit Tiff in a significantly different form than it appeared at Cannes earlier this year. Having been shorn of roughly fifteen minutes of so, I suppose the...

One of the most culturally significant works of American literature, Jack Kerouac's On the Road has been eyed for the big screen for decades. This week, Walter Salles' take hits theaters with a cast that includes Sam Riley as Sal Paradise, Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarity and Kristen Stewart as Marylou. Written in 1951 and finally published in 1957, On the Road details Kerouac's own adventures traveling across the Us and Mexico with Neal Cassady and his beginnings of an interoperation of spirituality fueled by jazz, alcohol and all forms of experimentation. ComingSoon.net sat down to speak with Salles, best known for his work at adapting the similarly historic travelogue The Motorcycle Diaries in 2004. In the below interview, Salles discusses his ultra-realistic take on...

Immediately following difficult periods in history, people often turn to liberation movements in order to fix society. That determination is emotionally shown in the upcoming adventure drama ‘On the Road,’ directed by ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ helmer Walter Salles. Based on the best-selling classic 1957 novel of the same name by Jack Kerouac, the film, which was written by Jose Rivera, shows the historical context and the motivations of Americans living in the late 1940s. Led by a talented young cast, the movie gives a clear understanding of the characters’ relationships and their struggles to overcome their internal struggles. ‘On the Road’ follows young New York City writer Sal Paradise (played [ Read More ]

Sam Riley plays literary icon Sal Paradise in the big-screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On the Road -- but in his upcoming film, Maleficent, the British actor portrays Angelina Jolie's "lackey." "I play a raven -- I'm Angelina's lackey, basically," the 32-year-old actor said Thursday at a Peggy Siegal Company-hosted NYC screening of On the Road. That's not a bad gig? "No, there are worse jobs," he told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that Jolie's make-up in the Disney Pictures' film is "insane" but "she's not Method. She's very nice. She took me under her wing, so

'Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.' On The Road, Jack Kerouac's celebrated novel published in 1957, has traditionally been thought unfilmmable. It is not surprising, therefore, that the first film adaptation of the Kerouac opus is being released only this year. After a long history of failed attempts with numerous directors and stars attached, the current incarnation of Salles' groundbreaking film finally celebrated its world-premiere at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The famed Brazilian director's version of Kerouac's beat epic is extremely faithfully to the text. As in the novel, writer Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) has his life turned upside when he encounters the free-spirited Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and his girlfriend , Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Also starring Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, Amy Adams, Kristen Dunst and more, Salles' film serves as the ultimate love letter to that free-wheeling generation ...

It's not the golden "Deep Throat" years of the '70s anymore, it's the age of the Internet and no one really goes to the movies to see nudity, but women proved they were hungry for some beefcake with the wild success of "Magic Mike." Meanwhile, A-list actresses bared it all for some compelling reasons that were absolutely integral to the script… hehe.

Though the Twilight Saga has reached its finishing point (finally), fans of K-Stew won’t have to wait too long before they get to see her once again flash her angsty take on Derek Zoolander’s Blue Steel once more. Stewart’s newest endeavor puts her under seasoned Director Walter Salles as together they bring Jack Kerouac’s On The Road to the big screen.
A new image for the film has recently surfaced, and though it looks identical to the millions of pre-Twilight press pics that we’ve seen over the past few years, I can only hope that Brazilian BAFTA vet Salles will be able to do what hordes of other Directors could not–get Kristen Stewart to deliver a performance that at least rivals that of the Kim Cattrall’s plastic body double in Mannequin.

"Bless me father, for I will sin."
Here's a great new trailer for the Francis Ford Coppola-produced period coming of age film On The Road, which was directed by Walter Salles. I didn't really have any interest in seeing this movie until this trailer came along and showed me that it actually looks like a good film.

Here's the Synopsis:
After his father's death in the late 1940s, 24-year-old aspiring writer Sal Paradise meets 20-year-old ex-jailbird Dan Moriarty and his beautiful wife Marylou in New York. Dan is extremely charming and has a flexible moral code, and is as fascinated by Sal's obsession with writing as Sal is...

Now that The Twilight Saga is drawing to a close, Twi-hards have to look elsewhere for their KStew fix. Just the other day, the no-doubt wealthy actress was complaining to the press that she.s .desperate. to find her next gig. Maybe that.s because her next film, On the Road, is actually an old(ish) that has been banging around since early 2012, when it played to mild praise at the Cannes Film Festival. An adaptation of Jack Kerouac.s timeless beatnik novel, Walter Salles. On the Road rambles along in the path of free-spirited thinkers Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), struggling poets drinking and smoking their way through life . and putting off maturity for as long as is physically possible. A new trailer just hit Apple.s trailer site. See it ifor yourself right here: Stewart plays Marylou, Dean.s .girl. (though in the beatnik...

On the eve of Kristen Stewart's final "Twilight" bow, IFC released a new trailer for the movie with her next appearance, "On the Road."
An adaptation of the celebrated novel by Jack Kerouac, "On the Road" shows a whole lot more of Stewart than was ever seen in "Twilight" -- the actress appears naked multiple times and is shown performing sex acts on two men at once, in a moving car.
"I wanted to do it" Stewart said at Cannes. "I love pushing, I love scaring myself."
Produced by Francis Ford Coppola ("The Godfather") and directed by Walter Salles ("The Motorcycle Diaries"), "On the Road" premiered at Cannes and Tiff to mixed reviews.
The movie stars Sam Riley as Sal Paradise, Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarty, and features Kristen Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, and Elisabeth Moss, in addition to Kristen Stewart.
"On the Road" is due out in theaters Dec.

"Don't do anything I wouldn't do." IFC Films has put out yet another trailer (we've seen so many already!) for Walter Salles' On the Road, adapting Jack Kerouac's book about his own cross-country, road-trippin' experiences during the 1940's. The film actually focuses on Sam Riley playing Sal Paradise, who goes on an adventure with his wild friend Dean Moriarty, played by Garrett Hedlund. This seems more obviously timed with the final Twilight film hitting theaters soon since Kristen Stewart is also in it, but I don't think this is really for that crowd. It is a beautifully-shot film, and may be a poignant journey for some, but not all. Here's the second official Us trailer for Walter Salles' On the Road, in high def from Apple: On the Road, directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries, Dark Water), written by Jose Rivera based on Jack Kerouac's book,...
