He was a major contributor to Finnish semiotics, as well as to the
fields of psychiatry, literature, and philosophy. In 2000, the Semiotic
Society of Finland and the Programme of Semiotic Studies at the
University of Helsinki honored him by naming an award, "Oscar" of
Semiotics, after him.
