Showtime’s satirical thriller “The Curse,” created by stars Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and also starring Emma Stone, has exclusively shared its Emmy submission plans with Variety.
The three multi-hyphenates will have more than one chance at recognition across various categories for producing, acting, directing, writing and editing.
“The Curse” explores the tumultuous lives of a married couple (Fielder and Stone), who encounter a string of misfortunes while filming an HGTV series in New Mexico. Their challenges are compounded by a dubious “curse” and a manipulative producer (Safdie), which together threaten both the show and their relationship.
Stone, fresh off her second best actress Oscar win for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” is eyeing her first Emmy nod. She seeks recognition for her portrayal of Whitney, the co-host of the couple’s show about eco-friendly homes. Additionally, Stone is vying for a guest comedy actress nod for...

Long before the so-called "golden age of TV" arrived, "The Sopranos" seemed to hint at what was in store for the small screen. The groundbreaking show suggested what today seems axiomatic: that TV could be just as compelling, contain just as much tight storytelling, and feel just as premium as any movie. As far as television dramas go, "The Sopranos" set a standard that few series, even today, manage to meet.
Still, not everything the writers did was met with unanimous praise. The legacy of "The Sopranos" wasn't exactly sullied by what is surely one of the most divisive endings in TV history, but that infamous fade-to-black left some fans feeling let down by a series that never shied away from depicting the brutality of mob life. Put simply, you never really knew who was going to be offed from episode to episode, and while killing off characters on "The Sopranos...

A piece of television history has been sold. The diner booth seen in The Sopranos's final moments was sold on eBay after the restaurant where it had been located went under renovation. The owner of Holsten’s in New Jersey put the booth, which had been in the ice cream parlor for more than 50 years, up for sale on February 28th.
Starring James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Robert Iler, Vincent Pastore, and Steven Schirripa, the series aired on HBO between 1999 and 2007. It follows the life of New Jersey mafia boss Tony Soprano (Gandolfini), his family, and associates.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from the finale of Showtime’s “The Curse” now streaming on Paramount+.
The finale of “The Curse,” set nearly a year after the previous episode, begins in an unlikely place: the set of “The Rachael Ray Show.” Asher (Nathan Fielder) and Whitney (Emma Stone) appear on the cooking show via Zoom to promote the new season of their HGTV series, now called “Green Queen,” and explain to the masses the environmental benefits of “passive living.”
They also plan to announce their pregnancy during the live broadcast, Whitney’s baby bump purposefully in frame. But the “flipanthropist” couple is all but entirely ignored as Ray banters with her in-studio guest, “The Sopranos” star Vincent Pastore, who’s teaching her how to cook his famous meatball recipe. It’s a surreal start to a season finale that is about to get much, much weirder.

It’s only January, but we feel pretty safe saying we won’t see a more surreal and confounding season finale this year than the one The Curse just served up. Let’s try to make sense of it!
The finale — which debuted on Paramount+ With Showtime on Friday and airs this Sunday at 9/8c on Showtime — picks up months later, with a now-pregnant Whitney and Asher appearing as guests on Rachael Ray’s talk show to promote their show, which has been relegated to HGTV’s streaming service. This article contains spoilers for The Curse episode 10.
The first 25 minutes of The Curse‘s 10th and final episode are pretty much what you’d expect. The story of Asher Siegel (Nathan Fielder) and Whit Siegel (Emma Stone) begins to wind down and the husband-wife duo appears to have gotten (almost) everything they’ve ever wanted.
Their Flipanthropy renovation series, now rebranded Green Queen, has a spot on HGTV … albeit the HGTV streaming app but HGTV all the same. They get to promote their program on an episode of The Rachael Ray Show. Granted, Rachael is far more interested in her guest Vincent Pastore (of The Sopranos) and his meatball recipe but still … Rachael Ray! Whit is finally even pregnant, perpetually resting her hand on her bulging belly as if to reassure herself that the baby they tried so hard for is actually there. Baby Braxton, of course, is in...

Suffering from many of the same issues as Kasi Lemmons’ Witney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Spinning Gold contains too rich of a life for its 137-minute runtime. The brilliance of both Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane and Todd Haynes’ fictional glam rock epic Velvet Goldmine is that they understood there’s only so much you can bite off, starting with the official record and working with those in closest proximity to their subject.
Directed by Timothy Scott Bogart––son of its subject, Neil Bogart––and told from the first-person perspective of the record executive (played by Jeremy Jordan), Spinning Gold takes the colorful story of an entrepreneur who died at age 39 and races through several highlights. These include discovering and packaging Kiss, figuring out that Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” needed to be 17 minutes long so people can make love to it, and working with the Isley Brothers,...

The film year of 2022 pretty much ended with a “music biopic”, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (at least I’m making it the “year’s end” as it was the last advance screening I attended). It did fairly well at the box office but didn’t come close to the critical and award accolades of Bohemian Rhapsody or Judy. But that’s not going to halt Hollywood from “mining” this material, and so we’re getting a tune-filled “true” tale at the end of 2023’s first quarter. Oh, but this has a twist in that it doesn’t center around a beloved performer. No, this concerns the head of a record company. Yeah kids, in those ancient days before streaming and downloading, people went to brick-and-mortar stores and bought discs produced by these companies Aka recording labels. And one of the biggest of them in the mid-...

Much like movies, video game companies have historically been eager to make games based on popular TV shows. To be fair, certain shows do lend themselves to great games. Capcom was able to spin gold out of the Disney Afternoon animated lineup, and Konami’s big arcade hits were based on the ever-so-popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, an extremely early take on The Simpsons, and an X-Men cartoon.
Sometimes, though, you got some really weird adaptations. While some are remembered for the wrong reasons, others have been mostly lost to time despite being based on once-popular properties. Here are just some of the most bizarre and forgotten games based on popular TV shows.
15. The Real Ghostbusters (Arcade)
In 1987, developer Data East took a bird’s eye run-and-gun with crazy monster designs called Meikyuu Hunter G and spruced it up with an extra player and bells and whistles that made it qualify as a Ghostbusters tie-in.

Casablanca Records is one of the most influential music labels in history, but the story of its founder, Neil Bogart, isn't as well-known as it should be. Donna Summer, Parliament, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Isley Brothers, The Village People, Bill Withers, and the rock band Kiss all rose to great heights thanks to Bogart and were signed to the label that would become the most successful independent record company in history. Now, the film "Spinning Gold" looks to transport audiences back to the 1970s, when disco reigned supreme, funk was beginning to pick up steam, and Neil Bogart was on top of the world. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming music producer biopic, and more.

"The Sopranos" is known for being one of the best drama series of all time, and it is. But in addition to its darker moments, it's also a show with a surprising thread of humor throughout its six seasons. David Chase's series is as much about the human condition and the dissatisfaction with modern life as it is about mob violence, and in Chase's eyes, modern life can be funny as hell sometimes.
That dark comedy shows up as early as the very first episode of the series, in a scene in which young initiate Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli) and reliable mobster Sal "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero (Vincent Pastore) try to dispose of a body, and remind us for the first of many times that a life of organized crime isn't quite like the movies. Happy Halloween! You know, sometimes I feel a little bad for some of the supporting "Sopranos" actors. Many of them are stuck playing wiseguys for the rest of their lives, and I have to imagine that they sometimes get a little tired of that. A-list talent? Over here! When existential mob family drama The Sopranos premiered in 1999, it arguably redefined HBO and the TV landscape as a whole, with James Gandolfini starring as patriarch Tony Soprano, who tries to balance his responsibilities to blood relatives along with the pressures of being part of one of the Five Families. Edie Falco, Jamie Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler made up the New Jersey suburban Soprano family, while Michael Imperioli, Tony Sirico, Steven Van Zandt, Vincent Pastore, Steve Schirripa and Joe Pantoliano rounded out Tony's mob crew. And then there was Tony's sister (Aida Turturro) and cousin (Steve...

I don’t know what kind of a mood I was in when I sat down to watch The Birthday Cake but what I do know is that this movie did very little to clear up my state of mind. All I really knew was that this cast is a delectable smorgasbord of actors I love seeing up on the screen: William Fichtner, Vincent Pastore, Val Kilmer, Ewan McGregor, Lorraine Bracco and many many more, How could I go into this with low expectations? I actually had [semi] high-hopes to see what debutant writer/director Jimmy Giannopolous wass capable of – espeically with a cast that surely could shine up the dirtiest of turds with some stellar acting! John Gotti got his nickname, “The Teflon Don,” because it took forever for lawyers to get charges to stick. Armand Assante, the actor who played the iconic New York City outlaw in HBO’s original crime film Gotti: The Rise and Fall of a Real Life Mafia Don, is also in for the long haul. Assante will reprise his role in the upcoming Gotti Il: The Final Chapter, Facts Undisputed, it was announced at the event “Gotti: The Reunion,” which kicked off the MobMovieCon and SopranosCon weekend at Harrah’s Resort and Casino in Atlantic City.

Father Kelly (Ewan McGregor) advising Gio (Shiloh Fernandez) in The Birthday Cake, Jimmy Giannopoulos’ sharp debut feature.
In the first instalment of my conversation with Jimmy Giannopoulos on The Birthday Cake, Ed Bahlman (music producer and founder of 99 Records) joined us to discuss the score Jimmy co-wrote and performed with Tim Sandusky and how he worked on creating the original sound design for the film with Ryan M Price. We also touched on the screenplay, co-written with Diomedes Raul Bermudez and Shiloh Fernandez (who also stars as Gio), the possible subliminal influence of Shiloh being in Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood on the script, and Sean Price Williams’ entrancing cinematography.

The plot’s baffling, but not as baffling as why Kilmer, Ewan McGregor, and Paul Sorvino signed up for the director’s debut feature
Writer-director-composer Jimmy Giannopoulos doesn’t have a lot of previous credits to his name, and this gangster drama seems to be his first feature. But he or his producers are either extremely persuasive or very well connected because, given its meandering script and absurdly grand guignol ending, it’s astonishing that The Birthday Cake could attract such a starry cast. Admittedly lead actor Shiloh Fernandez, who plays son-of-a-dead-gangster Gio, isn’t yet a household name but within minutes his character is meeting Ewan McGregor playing a priest who inexplicably also narrates the story (his daughter Clara McGregor is a producer here and has a small role herself), while Lorraine Bracco features for an only slightly longer time as Gio’s widowed mother, and baker of the birthday cake of the title.

"Don't say nothin'." Screen Media Films has released an official trailer for an indie mob thriller titled The Birthday Cake, from first-time filmmaker Jimmy Giannopoulos. On the 10th anniversary of his father's mysterious death, Giovanni reluctantly accepts the task of bringing a cake to the home of his uncle, a mob boss, for a celebration. Just two hours into the night, Gio's life is forever changed... As he pieces together what really happened to his father all those years ago, he comes face to face with a kind of violence he has been trying to avoid his whole life. Shiloh Fernandez stars as Gio, with a huge ensemble cast including Val Kilmer (back in movies again!), Lorraine Bracco, Ewan McGregor, William Fichtner, Ashley Benson, Aldis Hodge, Penn Badgley, Vincent Pastore, Luis Guzmán, Jeremy Allen White, and Emory Cohen. A unique setup with the cake, but the rest of this looks like a bland mob movie.

Since Covid began last year, there has been one voice that I constantly looked forward to hearing week after week. And that voice belonged to comedian Joey Diaz. Diaz has been a stand-up comic with thirty years of experiences and stories. Along with his stories and jokes, Diaz also goes out of his way to answer questions and advise about life and comedy. I have been a fan of Joey Diaz since first seeing him on the Joe Rogan Podcast two or three years ago. I was super excited to find out that at the time, Diaz had a podcast at the time called, The Church of what’s Happening Now, which he co-hosted with Lee Syatt. Since Covid occurred, The Church wrapped up last year, and Lee Syatt is still doing podcasts. Be sure to look him up on YouTube and other platforms. Last year Joey Diaz moved back...

Screen Media has acquired North American rights to “The Birthday Cake,” a mob crime drama that boasts a murderer’s row of talent.
The film may be Jimmy Giannopoulos’ feature directorial debut, but the director attracted such stars and veterans as Shiloh Fernandez, Ewan McGregor, Val Kilmer, Lorraine Bracco, William Fichtner, Ashley Benson, Luis Guzman, Paul Sorvino, Vincent Pastore, Aldis Hodge, Penn Badgley, Emory Cohen, and Jeremy Allen White. That’s partly because the filmmaker spent years working in short films and music with artists including Miley Cyrus, A$AP Rocky and Kid Cudi. Screen Media will release the film in theaters and on demand in June 2021.
Here’s the official logline: “‘The Birthday Cake’ takes place on one fateful evening in the life of Gio (Fernandez), the son of a murdered mobster and the nephew of Brooklyn mob boss, Angelo (Kilmer). On the 10th anniversary of his father’s mysterious death,...

The whole idea of big Sunday dinners in Italian homes may seem like a cliché, but someone’s pouring tomato sauce on top of onions and garlic fried in olive oil on stovetops every weekend. The Sopranos, both the series and the two families at the center of it, brought just desserts every Sunday night to homes across America. Although, Carmela (Edie Falco) had been known to show up at neighbors’ homes mid-week, unannounced, with ricotta pie. It is only fitting that the main setting of Celebrating The Sopranos are fine dining establishments.
Consisting of three separate films, Celebrating The Sopranos is a series of conversations held by critics Matt Zoller Seitz and Alan Sepinwall, and cast members Federico Castelluccio (Furio Guinta), Arthur J. Nascarella (Carlo Gervasi), Vincent Pastore (Salvatore “Big Pussy’ Bonpensiero), and Vincent Curatola (Johnny ‘Sack’ Sacramoni), in restaurants that meant something to the show. For dessert, they...

From the late 90s to the mid 2000s, Vincent Pastore was known to the world as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on the hit series The Sopranos. Well-respected for being a mob enforcer, Bonpensiero became one of The Sopranos’ most popular characters. This popularity was largely thanks to Pastore whose knack for lighting up the screen was unmatched. Despite being popular for being part of the show, Vincent’s character was only around for the first few seasons before behind killed off. Since the show, lots of people have wondered what ever became of Vincent. What many people don’t realize though, is

Ever since Guy Ritchie exploded into the independent cinema landscape in the late 1990s, he’s been one of the signature auteurs of the crime genre, injecting a particular blend of style and enthusiasm — and a penchant for overlapping ensemble storylines — into the cinematic lexicon. To his fans, that’s enough: Ritchie’s many similar crime comedies scratch a particular itch by telling one type of story in largely similar ways, not unlike a series of slasher sequels or rom-coms. To his critics, it sometimes seems like Ritchie is a one-trick pony, even though he’s repeatedly tried, with some success and some failures, to break out of his iconic style and prove how multifaceted he can be.

"It gets easier... But it ain't ever gunna be easy." An official trailer has arrived online for an indie coming-of-age comedy titled Bully, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Santino Campanelli. This premiered at the Dances With Films Festival last year, but hasn't played anywhere else yet - and it's pretty clear why as there's not much here. Bully is about a heavy-set high school kid named Jimmy who is constantly tormented by the resident school bully and his cronies. But after he meets a boxer, he starts training and learns how to fight back. Truly the best way to fight bullies is to literally fight them! Right?! Starring Tucker Albrizzi as Jimmy, along with Danny Trejo, Ron Canada, Vincent Pastore, Jack Difalco, Elanna White, and Jay Lee. Despite the good intentions, it looks pretty bad and impressively derivative. Check it out anyway. Here's the full-length trailer (+ official poster) for Santino Campanelli's Bully,...

Gabrielle Carteris has been re-elected president of SAG-aftra, fending off challenges from Matthew Modine and three other contenders.
Carteris won handily with 13,537 votes, or 44% of ballots cast, to 10,682 for Modine and 5,048 for Jane Austin, 1,096 for Queen Alljahye Searles and 367 for Abraham Justice.
The results were announced early Thursday morning at 4 a.m. following one of the most bitter election campaigns in memory, including multiple accusations of misconduct.
Camryn Manheim won the secretary-treasurer post with 16,047 votes, or 53%, as Carteris’ running mate. She defeated Modine ally Jodi Long, who garnered 10,251 votes, followed by Chuck Slavin with 2,204 votes and Rob Stats with 1,790. The union mailed a total of 145,700 ballots, so the participation level was about 21%.
Carteris, best known for playing Andrea Zuckerman on “Beverly Hills 90210,” has been president since 2016. She and her allies in the moderate-leaning Unite For Strength and United Screen Actors Nationwide have been in control of SAG-AFTRA and SAG for a decade.

Give it up for New Jersey! On Aug. 26, the cast of The Sopranos reunited at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards to present the best pop award, and it felt like the '90s all over again. Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Drea de Matteo, and Vincent Pastore represented their onscreen roots at the award show in Newark, NJ, while presenting the award to the Jonas Brothers, and even brought some mafia humor à la Tony Soprano.
"I got a problem. I don't recall anyone asking me if they can do an award show here," Pastore joked. "MTV, what do you think you're doing? Handing out awards without my permission. How about I win something, too? I'm just saying this is a nice little show they got here, but it would be a shame if the power went out." Then Sigler chimed in that there were "a lot of witnesses" there.
