We’ve had a marvellous run of Taskmaster series lately, so when a new line-up announcement is on the horizon, it’s easy to wonder whether the winning streak will continue or if we’re due a dud.
Never fear – Alex Horne and co. have delivered once again, although the series 17 Taskmaster line-up might not be quite what you’re expecting. Instead of the now-traditional Taskmaster family line-up, this time they’ve gone for a veteran from outside the world of stand-up comedy, plus four rising stars with slightly less mainstream recognition than normal. As ever with this show though, anybody you’re not familiar with at the start, you’ll almost certainly love by the end of the series.

As Reece Shearsmith just announced, it’s the beginning of the end for Inside No. 9. Filming on the horror-comedy anthology’s ninth and final series began in late 2023, which means a wrap on one of the BBC’s most consistently entertaining and inventive shows is imminent.

Series nine is expected to air in spring 2024, and will add a final six episodes to the existing 49 stories in Shearsmith and co-creator Steve Pemberton’s back catalogue. Barring the first look image above, which shows Pemberton in drag at an underground train station (platform no. nine?), we don’t know anything about the stories, settings or characters yet, but we do know who’ll be joining the pair as guest stars… and it’s a deep bench.

Mark Gatiss’ revival of A Ghost Story for Christmas, a British strand of one-off specials infrequently aired around the holidays since 1971, continues with what is possibly its best entry yet: Lot No. 249. The League of Gentlemen alum has maintained a substantial interest in horror, much like comrades Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, but unlike the Inside No. 9 duo, Gatiss digs up neglected works from classic British literature — before now, namely M. R. James — and reintroduces them to contemporary audiences.
In Lot No. 249, Kit Harrington plays the prying university student who acts on suspicions about his odd neighbor (Freddie Fox). The Egyptologist in question is not only guilty of certain “perversions” he is also using a reanimated mummy — the story’s otherwise nameless namesake — to carry out his wicked plans. This includes murdering his various rivals on campus. The protagonist later intervenes, only to then make a startling, if not belated realization about his enemy.

Fans of British TV ate well in 2023. The year said goodbye to some excellent British TV shows with the finales of extraordinary crime dramas Happy Valley, Top Boy, Guilt and Endeavour – four very different shows set in four very different places. We waved off comedies Sex Education and Ghosts, and welcomed back some exciting returns in the form of Black Mirror, Good Omens and of course, Doctor Who.
And then there were the new additions – superhero comedy Extraordinary, police newbie drama Blue Lights, mind-bending comic book adaptation Bodies and chilling true crime series The Sixth Commandment.
It’s hard to separate the pack, but using a complex system of pulleys and levers, a gunge machine and – unfortunately necessary for the person who nominated The Idol – an oubliette, Den of Geek polled its writers and drew up two lists of the best TV of the year, one for American shows and...

Be sure to lock your doors when you get home this Halloween, for a sinister, unearthly presence willing be walking the streets this All Hallow’s Eve.
We don’t mean actual ghosts, obviously, we’re talking about all those precocious costumed youths in shoddily applied face paint having the audacity to knock on your door demanding some of the multipack of snack-size sweets you got from Tesco on the way home from work. Unlike other anthology series, Inside No. 9 not only reinvents itself with each episode, its multi-genre approach gives the showrunners plenty of chances to experiment. One episode could be science fiction, and then the next is a comedy. There is really no telling what’s in store for viewers as they tune in. Now, the show’s masterminds and stars, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, tend to offer a variety of odd tales every season, but this installment has, for the most part, thrills and suspense on the brain.
Not since 2018 has Inside No. 9 produced a holiday special. “Dead Line” delivered an immersive Halloween experience born out of faux technical difficulties, and before that, “The Devil of Christmas” shocked viewers in 2016 with an unforgettable twist in the tail. Think Black Mirror with a dash of Monty Python and math class. The dark comedy anthology, Inside No. 9, written and often performed by funnymen Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton, delivers stories with connections to the number nine. The core message of Good Omens Season 2 Episode 4 is one of trust.
On the periphery here -- but soon to take center stage, it seems -- Nina's relationship with Lindsay is falling apart because there is no foundational trust. Can she and Maggie do better if their connection is jumpstarted with meddling?
Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship is rooted in an unspoken trust that has developed over the millennia they've known each other, while it is clear that trust will only be betrayed when dealing with Hell's workforce. You'd think Nazi zombies might know better.
Shax kicks it off by pretending to be a hitchhiker to get close to Aziraphale as he returns to London from Edinburgh.
Picking up a hitchhiker is a pretty intense trust exercise on both sides. Driver and hitchhiker must both trust the other to not be a serial (or even a one-off) killer.
Of course, Aziraphale...

Prime Video has released the official trailer for the second season of the comedy ‘Good Omens.’
Michael Sheen and David Tennant are back as Aziraphale and Crowley. Here the pair may have helped stop the Apocalypse, but that doesn’t appear to have done them any favours with Heaven or Hell.
Now they must re-team to solve a mystery that takes in all of heaven and hell – seems the archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) has gone missing.
Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith, Niamh Walsh and Derek Jacobi are all back for the new run. They’re joined this time by Nina Sosanya, Miranda Richardson, Dame Sian Phillips, Tim Downie, Pete Firman, Andi Osho and Alex Norton. Maggie Service, Quelin Sepulveda and Shelley Conn also star.
Neil Gaiman continues as executive producer and co-showruns, along with executive producer Douglas Mackinnon who also returned to direct.

Warning: contains Inside No. 9 series 1-8 spoilers.
Nearly every episode of Inside No. 9 features one or both of its writers, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, and both have put in some truly great performances over the course of the show’s almost 50 episodes. Pemberton won a Bafta for his performance as an alcoholic ex-comedian down on his luck in series four’s ‘Bernie Clifton’s Dressing Room,’ though that was far from his only standout half-hour. His frazzled everyman drawn to the brink in call-centre mystery ‘Cold Comfort’, arrogant fantasy screenwriter in ‘Simon Says’ and regretful physicist in ‘A Random Act of Kindness’ all show how much more there is to the actor than comedy Psychoville grotesque David Sowerbutts.
The same goes for Shearsmith, who’s given several poignant and complex performances alongside his heightened ‘Wuthering Heist’ and ‘Lip Service’ clowning. His hapless primary teacher in ‘Mr. King...

Warning: spoilers for Inside No. 9 series 8 episode 6 “The Last Weekend”.
Locked inside a burning wardrobe, paralysed by Puffa fish venom and cannibalised while still alive, decapitated by a magician’s guillotine, savaged by vampire attack, frozen to death in the elements, sacrificed in a Pagan ritual, bludgeoned, shot, and sliced up on camera… In almost 50 episodes, Inside No. 9 has played out a great many nauseating deaths. “The Last Weekend” though, takes the biscuit – honey and oat, obvs.
It started as the touching story of Chas and Joe, a couple celebrating their ninth anniversary in a remote Scottish holiday cabin. Elegiac title “The Last Weekend” though, plus scenes labelled for each of the five stages of grief, signalled that there was more to these two than met the eye, which turned out to be very much the case. Joe, we were led to believe, had prostate cancer. Chas was...

All through the run-up to series eight of Inside No. 9, audiences were told to expect an episode called ‘Hold on Tight!’, set on a No.9 bus. Inside No. 9 is an anthology show, in which writer-actors Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith take on different roles in each self-contained episode, alongside an impressive array of guest stars. ‘Hold on Tight!’, press were told, would be an homage to 1970s comedy On the Buses, and would feature guest star Robin Askwith, who is best known for his ‘cheeky’ 1970s sex comedy roles. Photos were released of Askwith, Pemberton and Shearsmith in costume next to a red London bus, and a movie-style poster was made. Clips of Pemberton and Shearsmith in their bus conductor costumes were included in the series eight trailer.

Warning: contains spoilers for series 8 episode 4
In 2017, Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi told a credulous tabloid that he hoped his next project after the Tardis would be a Steven Moffat-written revival of 1970s sitcom On the Buses. “I have got a Blakey in me,” Capaldi assured The Sun, referring to Stephen Lewis’ dyspeptic bus inspector character. Moffat ran with the joke, agreeing whole-heartedly that after Sherlock, bringing back On the Buses would be his natural next move.
Five years later, when Inside No. 9 creators Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton wanted to pull their audience’s leg, On the Buses once again served as a punch line. Among the first look images of series eight was one of the creators and cheeky 1970s sex comedy star Robin Askwith in full On the Buses costume. Finally! What was that film about the serial killer who wore their dead mum’s dress? It’ll come to me.
In ‘Love Is a Stranger’, Claire Rushbrook’s Vicky may have been a psycho but it was hard not to side with her – even after she landed that final hammer blow. Everything in the previous half hour had directed us towards sympathy, from the emotional piano music accompanying her online dating humiliations, to Rushbrook’s endearing, detailed performance that made Vicky the most recognisably human character in the half hour.
Radiating loneliness, Vicky suffered knockbacks, rudeness, deception and hurtful criticism, but soldiered on in her search for The One. It’s a real study that Gareth cites in his call to Dermot O’Leary’s radio show. Published in the British Medical Journal in 1993, Scanlon, Luben, Scanlon and Singleton asked the question “Is Friday the 13th bad for your health?” Yes, was their conclusion, due to an increased risk of hospital admission as a result of transport accidents. “Staying at home is recommended.”
Trust the writers of Inside No. 9 – a show where dark fates lurk around every corner – to devise a scheme whereby a character takes the precautionary measure of staying at home on Friday the 13th, only for their wife to be killed in a transport accident right outside their front door on Saturday the 14th. Against gods with this capricious and cruel a sense of humour, nobody can win.

It's another very hot episode this week: not because of excessive sexy chat but rather because the AC in the studio is broken again. So please put any delirium or rambling (over and above the usual amount) down to that.
Other than a large quantity of sweat, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton join us to talk about the new eighth series of Inside No.9 (Inside No. 8?) and Big Tom Davis hangs out with Boyd to chat the new series of The Curse. Plus, we get ChatGPT to review the podcast and try very hard not to melt.

There are casual TV fans – the kind of people who are occasionally reminded of an old favorite show and fondly think ‘I used to love that’ but then get back on with wood-staining the garden fence, filling in their tax return or whatever demands adult life is currently making of them – and then there are the TV fans who don’t need reminding of their old favorite shows because they’re currently midway through their fifth Battlestar Galactica go-around while moderating several BSG r/television subreddits and crocheting a replica Saul Tigh eye patch.
The TV rewatch podcast is here for both types of listener – they’re a fun whoosh of nostalgia for the first, and the chance to finally get behind-the-scenes answers to burning questions for the second. Most of all, they’re a good time in the company of pals and a great excuse to revisit an old favorite.

The wait is almost over: the BBC has confirmed that the eighth series of Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s horror-comedy anthology Inside No. 9 will start on Thursday the 27th of April at 10 p.m. on BBC Two and iPlayer.
The official summary for the new series (which will be the penultimate run for the Bafta-winning show as its creators plan to take an indefinite break from it after series nine), is as follows: “From the top deck of a London bus to a remote lakeside cabin, from online dating to a late-night summoning, all life (and death) is here. Thrills, spills, chills and kills from the fertile minds of Shearsmith and Pemberton.”
With the release news came the first official teaser trailer (see below), with glimpses of all five episodes arriving in the wake of excellent festive special ‘The Bones of St Nicholas‘. That story was set in...

This post contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 7 of "The Mandalorian," "The Spies."
After last week's languid, lighthearted episode in the latest season of "The Mandalorian," we have been treated to an extremely high-stakes penultimate episode meant to gear us toward an explosive finale. Delivering a cold open that strengthens the show's connections with the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, Rick Famuyiwa's "The Spies" does not waste any time in setting up multiple future storylines in an attempt to fill in the gaps or fleshing out the canon.
We finally see Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) in the flesh after being teased about his return for six episodes, and the big baddie is busy conversing with the Imperial Shadow Council, who are working overtime to reinstate the Empire covertly. We see Admiral Pellaeon (Steve Pemberton), who has a direct connection to Grand Admiral Thrawn, along with Commandant Hux (Brian Gleeson), known to...

After five Sundays of spectacular swearing, sibling betrayal, sinister plotting and – most importantly – stews, Happy Valley is about to air its last ever episode. One of the best British dramas of the 21st century returned after a seven-year break on New Year’s Day this year, and over the past few weeks writer Sally Wainwright has served up something well worth the wait, with Tommy Lee Royce crashing back into the lives of the Cawood family with a renewed ferocity.
The new season opened with Tommy (James Norton) behind bars, serving a life sentence for multiple murders. Before long, we discovered that his impressionable son Ryan (Rhys Connah) has been visiting him for years, unbeknownst to his grandmother, Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire).
To her horror, Catherine discovered that her own sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) and Clare’s partner Neil (Con O’Neill) were the ones taking Ryan to visit Tommy behind her back.

The return of Happy Valley – seven years after its second season – might just constitute the first “pinch me” moment of 2023. By the second episode, it’s back to business as usual. Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) is rolling up her sleeves to do some good ol’ police work, while Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) is up to no good and sporting a new hairdo.
Et tu Brute?
Last week’s episode left Catherine with the revelation that her post-Tommy life of domestic bliss isn’t quite as blissful as she had thought. Someone has been taking Ryan (Rhys Connah) to see his no-good father in prison – but who? Episode two gives us the answer straight off the bat: Clare! More specifically, it’s Clare (Siobhan Finneran) and Neil (Con O’Neil) but mostly, we’re just shocked about Clare.
Catherine drops her jaw in utter disbelief, muttering: “S***.” Then comes the inevitable follow-up question: Why?...

There are very few TV shows that truly stamp themselves on the cultural psyche. Usually, they’re big, genre-defining American shows. The Sopranos, say, or The Simpsons. But no programme has had a greater influence, in recent years, than Sally Wainwright’s blistering Brontë-country barnstormer, Happy Valley. There you have it: the perfect Inside No. 9 specimen. Macabre, comedic, cleverly plotted, with a little bit of pathos and a gruesome end that – unlike ‘The Devil of Christmas’ – punishes the right person. If this show were taught in schools, ‘The Bones of St Nicholas’ would be the exemplar used to illustrate the classic ingredients of Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s show. The setting, the characters, the gags, the reveal, a gross bit about pickling murdered children in brine… this half-hour has it all.

Inside No. 9, one of the best anthology series in recent years, returns with a seventh installment. Creators and co-stars Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton are back to make audiences laugh and shiver with these six diverse tales of various genres. And fans of the eerie and unexplained will surely enjoy this new batch of stories.
The season opens with “Merrily, Merrily”, which features one of the show’s most unconventional settings. After having not seen one another for some time, friends reunite at a lake, where they must paddle on a pedalo to reach their destination. As to be expected among friends who’ve lost touch over the years, arguments erupt. However, the worst of their reunion has yet to come — now their paddle boat is stuck in the middle of the lake. From there Inside No. 9 toys with the audience, playing on their expectations in the best way possible.

Actor, writer and director Diane Morgan was in her teens when she first tried her hand at improv, an experience which first gave the “very shy, very quiet” 15-year-old a chance to step out of her shell and play a different character.
“I think my whole world opened up, basically,” says Morgan of that moment, ahead of receiving Variety and the Edinburgh TV Festival’s 2022 Outstanding Achievement Award. “I’d always been completely invisible and then, suddenly, I was the funny one.”
So it was unsurprising when Morgan decided she would try to pursue it professionally, even if it wasn’t the most obvious choice for a girl from Bolton. “I always thought I’d make a career out of it, even though everyone was telling me I wouldn’t make a career out of it and that it was insane,” she recalls. “Because I was from Bolton, and, you know,...

Warning: this Inside No. 9 review contains spoilers.
Sometimes Inside No. 9 is funny, sometimes it’s thrilling, sometimes it’s touching and sometimes it’s a bit scary. The series seven finale ‘Wise Owl’ has gone for borderline harrowing. Satirizing 1970s and 80s-style public information videos, the episode is intercut with animations that resemble the ‘Charlie Says’ series which supposedly taught kids how to stay out of danger but many decades later proved to be Gen-x nightmare fodder.
The host is Wise Owl, who must always be trusted and listened to, who teaches kids that pylons are dangerous (the actual public information video this particular short is aping was live action and involved a kid flying a kite near electricity pylons and getting fried. It’s still troubling today.) Don’t be a ‘twit-you’ runs Owl’s catch phrase. But as the show progresses it becomes increasingly apparent there...

Warning: contains spoilers for Inside No. 9 Series 7 Episode 5
Out in the world of TV and movie production, millions are regularly spent on scripts containing a fraction of the complexity, ambition or potential in ‘A Random Act of Kindness’. Inside No. 9’s first sci-fi story was an imaginative feat frustratingly limited inside a BBC comedy budget.
Given the right backing, this desperately sad tale of a bereaved son’s guilt driving him to invent time travel and sacrifice his life to repair his relationship with his mother would make an excellent feature film. There could be an indie version starring Chloe Sevigny and David Thewlis, or a big Hollywood one perhaps, with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in the Jessica Hynes and Steve Pemberton roles. Triple the runtime, add a couple of zeroes to the budget, forget about the need to contain all the action inside a ‘number nine’ and you’d really have something.

Warning: contains spoilers for Inside No. 9 episode ‘Kid/Nap’
The internet can’t decide if it was Pablo Picasso or the Dalai Lama who said “learn the rules like a pro so you can break them as an artist”, so let’s split the difference and say it was Peter Andre. What Andre’s getting at is that rules will only take an artist so far (to ‘Mysterious Girl’) but transgression of said rules is necessary for an act of true creation (‘Insania’).
In ‘Kid/Nap’, Inside No. 9 transgresses its own golden rule. Not the one about never hiring actors Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith have worked with before – that went out with Jason Watkins in series three’s ‘The Bill’ and has been snubbed several times since. Lara in this episode being played by Daisy Haggard, aka Psychoville’s Debbie, is no foul.
Instead, it’s the rule about every Inside No.

Warning: this Inside No. 9 review contains spoilers.
Without question, that episode featured the worst dialogue, the most clichéd plot threads, and the most thinly drawn, hackneyed characters Inside No. 9 has ever produced. Which, of course, was entirely the point. This was metadrama: four characters in search of a rubbish author.
Unlike with most of Inside No. 9’s surprises, who bets the show’s creators were hoping the penny would drop sooner rather than later with this one? If regular viewers didn’t smell a rat when they heard Sophie Okonedo’s flawed-detective-with-inner-demons gutsily snarl, “I know how to dig my heels in, and let me tell you, size eight stilettos dig in deep,” Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith should worry. The stink was quite deliberate.
There was more where that came from, ‘Kat’ spoke only in affected barbs and emphatic monologues about not having a cock...
