After playing real-life baseball fixture Billy Beane in last year's acclaimed Moneyball, and winning an Oscar nomination for his troubles, Brad Pitt is getting low to play enforcer Jackie Cogan in Killing Them Softly, and the first trailer for Andrew Dominik's male-centric look at the bad things bad men do to each other is full of intrigue, moody weather and a lot of machismo.
Sporting slicked-back hair, a goatee and an omnipresent cigarette, Pitt impresses in the first glimpse of this crime story based on George V. Higgins' novel and co-stars James Gandolfini, Richard Perkins and the granddaddy of mobster movies, Ray Liotta.
With Pitt's youthful looks, it feels a little weird to hear him refer to other thugs in the finger-waving "kids these days" manner but in Killing Them Softly, he's clearly not to be messed with, regardless of that chiseled jaw.
