Fascinating fictional worlds and the magical creatures that inhabit them are a common topic for many fantasy projects. Even before Game of Thrones and Supernatural, at the very beginning of the 21st century, there was a series about a fairy tale universe that comes into contact with our reality.
Now, 24 years later, this project has (rightly) become a favorite of many fantasy fans, reminiscent of carefree childhood and the time when we still believed in magic. And that project is The 10th Kingdom.
What is The 10th Kingdom About?
A New York cafe waitress, Virginia, rescues a dog one day that turns out to be the enchanted Prince Wendell, who has fled to our world from the land of the Nine Kingdoms to escape his stepmother, the Evil Queen. The Prince is Snow White's grandson and the direct heir to the throne, but the Queen has her own plans.

Fairy tales, in their undiluted forms, need no help when it comes to being creepy and horrifying. However, the Disneyfication of these classic stories makes it rather easy to forget their morbid beginnings. In the case of Cinderella, most modern adaptations of this quintessential rags-to-riches tale rarely bring up the violent aspects. All of that has been long removed in favor of safer elements, such as fairy godmothers and anthropomorphic mice. Yet, when reimagining the flaxen servant-turned-princess as someone who seeks “bloody vengeance,” Tom Jolliffe looked to the past; the Cinderella’s Revenge screenwriter found inspiration in the character’s gruesome roots.
The Brothers Grimm did not come up with Cinderella (or Aschenputtel) all on their own, but their familiar variation provides part of the source material for Cinderella’s Revenge. Charles Perrault is also credited, seeing as his French version (Cendrillon) was the first to feature the fairy godmother,...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Once Upon a Time, in a Far Away Land, the Vibes Were Fucked
I’m a simple man with simple political views: I believe the United States government should take all of its pageantry cues for state events from the film “Donkey Skin.” Dead presidents should be laid to rest inside a giant glass Christmas ornament. White House staffers should be required to paint themselves red or blue to reflect the party in power. And the Speaker of the House should preside over congress while sitting on a giant stuffed cat.

OpinionRecasting Ariel as a mermaid of African descent allows brown and black children to feel seen. It allows them to imagine themselves in magical stories, a realm where they’re rarely present.Half-fish and half-woman, the mermaid in fantasy, fairytale, and folklore presents an intriguing idea – that of a sensual yet naive being from another world who is near-human, but animal enough to be exotic. Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid, a fairytale first published in the 19th century, has lent itself to multiple interpretations and readings over the years. The mermaid in the original story feels trapped in her body because of her inability to live in the human world. She gives up her voice and embraces pain for the promise of love. Her forlorn figure on the rocks is a haunting image, and it has continued to stay relevant across centuries for this very reason. Disney’s...

As a little girl, I loved watching "Cinderella." It wasn't the princess thing or the handsome prince who comes to save her that appealed to me. I liked the talking mice and birds who helped make her dress, her sparkly shoes, and the idea of a fairy godmother who could help a girl out of a crappy situation. Oh, and those very pretty dogs she gets at the end, which I remember more from the book that went along with the film.
It wasn't until years later that the whole idea of being rescued by a man/abusive treatment of a young woman/princess fantasy started to chafe. Ultimately, it doesn't matter why I liked it as a little kid. I just did, and I was hardly alone. The animated Disney film is considered a classic, despite the reexamination many of us have done over the decades since its release in 1950.

In the frequently picked-over corpse of author Charles Perrault’s classic story “Cinderella,” centered on a servant girl who rises from obscurity after falling in love with a prince, lie such themes as perseverance, hope and the value of being a dreamer. These are the cornerstone principles of the Disney corporation, founded by a fellow dreamer who, similar to the plucky protagonist in the fairy tale, made a wish and saw it come true. Though the studio has plundered these riches before with the likes of the popular 1997 TV movie musical and 2015’s lavish live-action feature, Disney+ original “Sneakerella” amounts to a modernized, more tween-oriented telling. Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum’s re-sole of the story, which sees a talented teen fantasizing about designing sneakers for sports royalty, delivers a poignant take on the 1950s animated film it partially cannibalizes.

From the outset of Amazon Studios’ new “Cinderella” movie, writer-director Kay Cannon welcomes audiences into a fantasy unlike any before it, putting a glimmering girl-boss gloss on the oft-adapted fairy tale. In this heightened unreality, characters can break into song with a Janet Jackson chart-topper as easily as they belt out a new Broadway-style power ballad. This latest retelling of the Charles Perrault classic offers a feminist-friendly update as its titular heroine dreams of a career, not a man, to whisk her away. While Cannon’s inspired creative approach and jukebox musical style all point to an elegant and empowering redesign of this most familiar of garments, her execution puts quite a few tears in the fabric.

Amazon Studios has released the first official trailer for “Cinderella,” the live-action musical adaptation of the beloved fairytale that was originally developed at Sony Pictures. The trailer offers a glimpse of the stacked cast, which includes Camila Cabello, Idina Menzel, Minnie Driver, Nicholas Galitzine, Billy Porter, Missy Elliott, and Pierce Brosnan. Music fans will be more excited about getting a first listen to the soundtrack, which incorporates new arrangements of beloved pop songs like “Single Ladies” as well as original songs by Cabello. Clearly, this is not your typical fairytale.
“Cinderella” will present a modern take on the traditional story, with Cabello playing the titular heroine as an ambitious young girl whose dreams for her life are bigger than the world she lives in. With the help of her Fabulous Godmother (“Pose” Emmy winner Porter), she sings and dances her way into making her dreams come true.

Jan Kounen’s comedy “My Cousin,” starring Vincent Lindon and François Damiens, will be one of the biggest French releases of the year. The film screens Friday at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris. In an exclusive interview with Variety, he talks about his key motivations for the project.
“My Cousin” is about two cousins (Lindon and Damiens) with wildly incompatible personalities and different ways of life, set in a luxurious Bordeaux vineyard. It marks a major new departure for Kounen, and is his first feature film for 11 years, after his 2009 Cannes closing film, “Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.”
Kounen has a cult following from previous pics such as “Dobermann” (1997), and spiritual Western “Blueberry” (2004), and is well known for his interest in shamanism, including his 2004 documentary “Other Worlds.” This interest has fed into his recent Vr projects – “Ayahuasca” (Kosmik Journey), “7 Lives” and “-22.7°C.”

Ellen Mirojnick had worked with Angelina Jolie twice (on 2016’s “By the Sea” and 2018’s “First They Killed My Father”) before being hired to design the costumes for “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” It was this familiarity that made her job easier. “You have a shorthand and trust – that’s really important. If you have that trust going in, no matter how different or difficult the project is, you are one step ahead of the game.”
Mirojnick had done the costumes for the 1998 television version of “Cinderella,” another adaptation of a Charles Perrault classic. She reaped an Emmy bid for that. But she readily admits that earlier credit was of no help now. “Yes, it was a fairytale period, but it was later and a different tone to ‘Maleficent,’ which was somewhere between medieval times and the renaissance.” However, she concedes, “the fun and the freedom of both projects are somewhat the same.

With her horned headpiece, impossible alabaster cheekbones and high-camp attitude, Maleficent looms as by far the most iconic villain Disney ever created. Landing Angelina Jolie to play the “Sleeping Beauty” baddie in 2014’s live-action redo was a dream-casting coup for which the studio was rewarded with three-quarters of a billion dollars at the global box office. That’s three-quarters of a billion reasons why the studio would want to dash off a sequel, although I can think of at least one why it should have reconsidered: The “Wicked”-like original went so far in its flip-the-script fairy-tale revisionism that the antagonist had essentially seen the error of her ways by the end — it was her kiss, not Prince Phillip’s, that awakened Aurora — leaving “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” almost no way to live up to its title.

Idina Menzel is in negotiations to join Camila Cabello in Sony’s “Cinderella,” portraying the evil stepmother.
The news comes a day after the revelation that Billy Porter was in talks to play Cinderella’s fairy godmother. Sony had no comment on either possible casting.
The stepmother role, also known as Lady Tremaine, is based on the original character from the Cinderella fairy tale created by Charles Perrault in the 17th century.
Menzel is best known as the voice of Elsa in Disney’s “Frozen,” in which she sang the Academy Award winning song “Let It Go.” She won a Tony for “Wicked” and was nominated for “Rent” and “If/Then.” She reprises her voice role in the upcoming “Frozen 2” and appears in A24’s upcoming crime drama “Uncut Gems.”
Cabello came on to the project in April with “Blockers” director Kay Cannon attached to helm and pen the script.

Disney has already exhausted its animated classic “Cinderella” with sequels, a massive live-action remake, and even an appearance in the recent “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” So, as far as Disney is concerned, “Cinderella” is old news. But over at Sony, the studio wants to re-invent the classic fairy tale from Charles Perrault with a new live-action film starring none other than pop star Camila Cabello.

Wes Anderson seems to love talking animals. So much so that he has made not one, but two, stop-motion movies starring verbal animals: first, “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” which featured the voice of George Clooney in the title role, followed by the endlessly eccentric “Isle of Dogs.” This delightful outing opens with a card that reads, “All barks have been rendered into English,” and sure enough, Anderson assembled many of his favorite actors — Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Tilda Swinton — to do the honors.
That decision has since inspired many a think piece, in which critics questioned the politics of Anderson’s choices. It’s a valid debate, but I’d prefer to tackle another question: Namely, why do we accept talking dogs in the first place?
The earliest example I can find in Western civilization dates back to “Don Quixote” author Miguel de Cervantes, who penned a novella...

The third season premiere of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” opened with a song entitled “Where’s Rebecca Bunch?” to address the second season’s cliffhanger: how and when Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) would react to being stood up on her wedding day. “It was way more plot-driven than we normally do,” executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna says of the vibrant musical number. “We had to explain a lot about the world and reset the world because it was right at the beginning of the episode. She didn’t really have the nerve to go full-[on] revenge mode, and the song tells you she’s disappeared, everyone’s looking for her, and she’s holed up in a hotel, depressed, gathering the resolve she needs.” And it was all done as a period piece.

Loosely based on Walt Disney’s 1959 animated classic, Sleeping Beauty, and also a spinoff of the Charles Perrault fairy tale, Maleficent, although not terribly successful with critics, went on to earn a whopping $758.5 million at the global box office, making a sequel to the 2014 dark fantasy a foregone conclusion.
Later this year, the pic is scheduled to begin production and already we know that Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning will be reprising their roles, ready to do battle with an all-new villain – who’ll be played by Deadpool actor Ed Skrein. With its big bad now set, casting has turned towards other key roles and today, we’re hearing that Disney has roped in a truly legendary actress for the part of the queen, with Michelle Pfeiffer said to be in talks for the job.

Pre-production is underway on director Joachim Ronning's "Maleficent" sequel at Disney, starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning:

Loosely based on Walt Disney’s 1959 animated feature, Sleeping Beauty, and considered a spinoff of the Charles Perrault fairy tale, Maleficent, although not as successful with critics, went on to earn a magical $758.5 million at the box office, making a sequel to the 2014 dark fantasy a foregone conclusion.
Later this year, the pic is scheduled to begin production and Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning will be reprising their roles, ready to do battle with an all-new villain. And, as it turns out, that antagonist will be a familiar face for fans of Marvel’s foul-mouthed merc.
That’s because Variety has learned this week that Deadpool actor Ed Skrein is in final negotiations to join Disney’s Maleficent sequel as the flick’s big bad. Details regarding Skrein’s role are scarce at the moment, but we do know that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales helmer Joachim Ronning will direct.

Mubi's retrospective, Catherine Breillat, Auteur of Porn?, is showing April 4 - June 3, 2017 in Germany.Sex Is ComedyThroughout her career, Catherine Breillat has provided viewers with a long-form meta-cinema experience. While metacinema is as old as the medium itself, since her debut feature A Real Young Girl in 1976, Breillat has developed a distinct form of it: one that collapses ‘autobiographical’ material, various artistic sensibilities, and the process of filmmaking itself.Like dozens of other English words—such as ‘aesthetic’ or ‘abject’—the word ‘meta’ has been largely misused or misapplied with regard to the film and literary criticism. Regarding the consumption of fiction, the appropriate use of the term 'metafiction,' 'metafilm,' et cetera, has its basis in the Greek meta, which does not translate directly into English but can be understood as a preposition similar to the English word ‘about’ (‘having to do with,’ or ‘on the subject of’). Metafiction is therefore,...

For Rosario Dawson and Katherine Heigl’s characters in Unforgettable, phony civility gives way, as it inevitably, cathartically must, to full-blown smackdown. They’re the warring queens in this well-appointed fairy tale, the beloved new girlfriend and the barely tolerated ex-wife, one good and one very, very bad. Played with utter conviction, neither is as self-assured as she seems, but they’re both ready to take it to the limit as director Denise Di Novi steadily turns up the heat on a lethal bouillabaisse of sex, domesticity and juicy archetypes — a recipe that’s equal parts Fatal Attraction, Charles Perrault and Nancy...

Towering castles where secrets lurk; fragile souls ripe for corruption; beasts made men, and men made beasts. These elements have populated our collective imaginations for centuries, across continents and generations. And for so many of these years, the stories remained the same. They served as warnings, cautionary tales against losing innocence and purity—morally-centered escapism. Only in the last fifty years, it seems, have we begun to deconstruct these stories. Some have watered them down for happier digestion; others amplify their sexuality and luridness. Few have been able to accomplish what Angela Carter did with her collection, The Bloody Chamber.
Focusing mainly on the tales of Charles Perrault, Carter began a trend that we have seen many times since—she brought classic stories into a modern context. A surface read shows obvious themes of feminism and sexuality. Traditional tales were meant to warn against sex (and sin, going hand in hand) and encourage wholesome unions,...

Matteo Garrone, the Italian filmmaker behind such efforts as Reality, is poised to make his English-language debut with Tale of Tales, the fantasy horror flick set for release in the States in little over a month’s time.
Emerging from last year’s Cannes Film Festival, the movie was entered into the running for the coveted Palme d’Or award. Rooted in the mythology of 17th century fairytales – fairytales that would go on to inspire Grimm Brothers, Hans Christian Andersen and Charles Perrault among others – Salma Hayek headlines the feature as a barren Queen of Longtrellis. It’s got quite the ensemble cast in tow, too, including the likes of Vincent Cassel, John C. Reilly, Toby Jones, and Stacy Martin.

The Spiritual Prudence Sitting on a bench in the garden of my house I stared at the infinite blue sky over my head. Hawks flew over me so high that sometimes I barely could see them—discounting the fact that I need to change my glasses prescription. Sometimes I could see their wings; sometimes I could see nothing but a small black point in the blue sky. Massive white clouds appeared. They had no shadow for the sun hit them with its light frontally; because of that, they appeared infinite cotton balls, immaculately white, like they were drawn by a child. This prosaic and innocent sight remind me of the feelings that I experienced when I watched Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella. Many filmmakers have shot the sky and the clouds. Many filmmakers have shot birds such as hawks and eagles flying rapidly over the earth (and one of them was...

This modern retelling definitely looks like a 2015 blockbuster but it peddles some uncomfortably old-fashioned values
Disney traditionalists are sure to find comfort in Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella as it glides on to home video this week, because unlike the majority of recent efforts to revive the studio’s flagship fairytales, this new spin on the glass-slippered classic makes few concessions to contemporary life. Indeed, the film plays out almost exactly as Walt himself might have envisioned, eschewing the metatextual postmodernism of last year’s Sleeping Beauty reboot Maleficent and the general batshittery of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.
Still, tradition has a short memory, so while the most influential version of the Cinderella story is probably the 1697 text by Charles Perrault, this new telling owes more to Disney’s own 1950 animated adaptation. Handily, this allows the studio to credit the story both to Perrault and “Disney’s Cinderella...

Drawing on the rich and till-now unexplored vein of Neapolitan fairy tales written by Giambattista Basile in the early 17th century, Tale of Tales combines the wildly imaginative world of kings, queens and ogres with the kind of lush production values Italian cinema was once famous for. The result is a dreamy, fresh take on the kind of dark and gory yarns that have come down to us from the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault, only here they're pleasingly new and unfamiliar. Starring Salma Hayek as a childless queen who is willing to do anything – absolutely anything –

It is being reported that the abrupt strike of midnight would not affect how long the Kenneth Branagh directed live-action Cinderella managed to stay at the box-office ball. On the surface of it, Disney's decision to frontload their updated live-action Cinderella with a brand new Frozen short looks like a bad move. A large part of Frozen's appeal with critics (if not with kids) was its subversive treatment of familiar storybook tropes like "true love's kiss", where Princess Elsa's relationship with her estranged sister became the central focus and romance was an afterthought. Surely attaching Frozen Fever could only emphasise how creaky and regressive the Cinderella story now looks.
But of course, Cinderella has endured for a reason. Director Kenneth Branagh has a steady handle on both the wonder and the humanity of the story, which was originally set to be adapted by Never Let Me Go's Mark Romanek. Though an intriguing prospect, Romanek's...

★★★☆☆ Courage and kindness (and perhaps a little magic for good measure) are the cornerstones of Kenneth Branagh's sweet retelling of Cinderella (2015), a benevolent yet paradoxically cravenness reimagining of Charles Perrault's classic fairytale. A live-action Disney production starring Cate Blanchett, Lily James and Richard Madden, its safe to assume there are no evil stepsisters getting their eyes pecked out by birds here, yet there does remain something rather vexing about the easily digestible perpetuation or archaic gender norms in this enjoyably blithe, yet problematic celebration of beauty and hetronormative behaviour. The iconic Disney ident seamlessly flows straight into Cinderella's storybook exposition.

Director Kenneth Branagh's "Cinderella" is a delightfully un-ironic retelling of the classic Charles Perrault story with Lily James as the titular girl, Cate Blanchett as a Joan Crawford-inspired wicked stepmother, and Helena Bonham Carter as a woozy fairy godmother who bears more than a passing resemblance to Madeline Kahn. Prince Charming, meanwhile, has own interest arc of self-actualization that makes "Cinderella" a wiser version of the familiar tale. Richard Madden, who's best known for playing Robb Stark on "Game of Thrones," plays the sharply uniformed prince who sets out to find the mysterious girl who fled his magnificent gala at the stroke of midnight. We asked Madden about whether he got to keep the portrait of himself in the film, whether there's a downside to playing Prince Charming, and what he learned from observing Cate Blanchett on set. ...

Cinderella is a refreshing callback to the unabashed costume epics of the past, when story and aesthetic held equal sway over ambitious filmmakers. Director Kenneth Branagh and his production team luxuriate in breathtaking sets, opulent costumes, and impeccable special effects while still keeping the old-fashioned story of courage and kindness at center stage. Yes, it would have been nice to see a little more cellulite and gumption from our heroine, but it’s hard to complain about a movie that so thoroughly delivers on spectacle and heart. Lush, extravagant, and painfully earnest, Disney’s Cinderella is a worthy adaptation of its classic predecessor. In fact, it’s quite wonderful.

On Friday, March 13, Disney will release the live action version of Cinderella from director Kenneth Branagh.
The original animated movie opened on February 15, 1950 to universal acclaim and 65 years later, Cinderella has become one of studio’s most treasured titles.
Branagh has once again turned to the Scottish composer Patrick Doyle for the score. The album features original music by Doyle marking the eleventh time he has teamed with Branagh.
In 1989, the director commissioned Doyle to compose the score for Henry V and they have subsequently collaborated on numerous pictures, including Dead Again, Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, As You Like It and Thor, and most recently Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
Doyle scored Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes for 20th Century Fox and Brave for Disney Pixar, which was awarded Best Original Composition for Film at the International Music and Sound Awards.

Over the past half decade Walt Disney Studios has spent a great deal of time and money to create live action versions of some of their own animated classics. While these films have performed at the box office, creatively they were often lacking. The studio may have finally found its own fairy godmother in the form of director Kenneth Branagh and his new adaptation of “Cinderella.” The Oscar nominated filmmaker is best known for shepherding new versions of "Hamlet" and "Henry V" to the big screen. The former was released almost 20 years ago, but Branagh earned a reputation for bringing a modern sense of realism to Shakespeare's creations even if the stories were still set in the distant past. This talent made him a smart choice to direct the underrated "Thor" and an even better hire for a movie that could have been just another shell for Disney’s consumer product division.

We never get tired of the story of Cinderella, and whether we know it or not, the version we never get tired of is the one put forth by Walt Disney 65 years ago. The 1950 animated feature, released 65 years ago this week (on February 15, 1950) was an instant classic, and its this version we think of when we imagine all the visual details of the story -- the slipper, the pumpkin, the fairy godmother, the mice, and Cinderella and Prince Charming dancing all over the palace grounds.
Still, as many times as we've heard the story or seen the cartoon, there's still more to be mined from the 17th-century fairy tale. (Indeed, Disney is releasing a new live-action retelling next month.) As many times as you've seen the 1950 classic, there's plenty you may not know about it -- how the actress who played Cinderella landed the part without even knowing she'd auditioned,...

Everything seems to indicate that Warner Bros don't believe in the film anymore, despite their massive investment. Yet, Jupiter Ascending proves to be very entertaining and although it suffers from a contrived script, the film still manages to offer a rich universe and great kinetic sequences. Somewhere between Charles Perrault's work and the Star Wars space adventures, Jupiter Ascending uses a similar narrative structure as that of fairy tales: Jupiter is a poor woman working as a cleaner who discovers herself to be of high importance within the universe. When she's targeted by vile members of the Abrasax family, Jupiter is rescued and protected...
