Exclusive: Jean Smart (Hacks) is developing a limited series about the relationship between a grandmother and her grandson in the final months of her life, which the Emmy winner will star in and executive produce.
Inspired by Kevin Hershey’s New York Times article “Love Letter: When My Grandmother Stopped Eating“, the project hails from Smart and her producing partner, Angeliki Giannakopoulos, and their SmartAngel Entertainment. Dennis Erdman and Clark Peterson acquired Hershey’s life rights and will executive produce the potential series along with Smart and Giannakopoulos.
The poignant — and funny — story centers around a grandmother, played by Smart, at the end of her life and her 20-something gay grandson who reluctantly becomes her caretaker. He moves into her Catholic senior living facility, where she lives alongside a mix of traditional and hippie nuns.
The team is currently out to writers to pen the script.

David Cronenberg’s 1981 sci-fi thriller Scanners (watch it Here) kicked off a franchise that consists of four follow-ups: Scanners II: The New Order, Scanners III: The Takeover, Scanner Cop, and Scanners: The Showdown (a.k.a. Scanner Cop II: The Showdown). The franchise has been dormant for twenty-seven years now, but not for lack of trying. For the last fifteen years, there has been talk of Scanners being revived by either a remake from the likes of Darren Lynn Bousman and David S. Goyer or a television series that at one time had Alexandre Aja attached. Now, after a long time in development hell, it looks like the TV series option is finally going to happen. Without the involvement of Bousman, Goyer, or Aja.

Scanners, the 1981 horror cult classic from David Cronenberg, is getting the HBO series treatment.
William Bridges, who won an Emmy for co-writing the “USS Callister” episode of Black Mirror, is acting as writer and showrunner for the series, which is in development, with Yann Demange, who helmed the pilot for HBO’s Lovecraft Country, directing. Both will exec produce.
This project will be a co-production between HBO, Media Res Studio and Wayward Films.
Scanners told of a small group of people with a range of psychic, telepathic and telekinetic powers. One faction of scanners, as these people were labeled, was led by a power-mad man named Revok, played by Michael Ironside, who aims to take over the world, while a private security firm recruits its own scanners to stop him for its own, possibly shady, reasons.

A TV series based on the cult horror films “Ginger Snaps” is in the works from the producers behind AMC’s hit series “Killing Eve.”
The trilogy of “Ginger Snaps” movies, released in the early 2000s, follows a pair of teenage sisters obsessed with death and the occult. The darkly comedic horror films starred Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle as Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald, the latter of whom gets bitten by a vicious creature and turns into a werewolf. Brigitte must fend off this new, violent version of her sister and stop her from wreaking havoc on their town.
The films failed to be major successes at the box office, but have gone on to garner a cult status and win indie acclaim.

HBO has closed deals for a noir drama series project entitled "Shakedown" from "Gone Girl" director David Fincher and "L.A. Confidential" writer James Ellroy.
Inspired by the story of vice cop turned P.I. Fred Otash, the series will be set in the tabloid world and the underbelly of Los Angeles in the 1950s. The project was originally developed at FX.
Ellroy penned a 2012 novella of the same name about a fictionalized version of Otash, but this will be an original drama project and not an adaptation. Fincher and Ellroy are executive producing alongside Joshua Donen, Clark Peterson, and Steven Hoban.
This marks Fincher's second project for HBO, the other being an adaptation of cult British series "Utopia" which is still in development.

CBS‘ single-camera comedy pilot Taxi-22 is being put on hold because of problems casting the lead. The project, which had been shepherded by the late James Gandolfini, is a one-lead show, with the casting of the central character considered crucial to its success. CBS brass liked the script and gave the pilot the best shot possible by giving it an early pickup in mid-January. (Taxi-22 was actually the first CBS pilot to be greenlighted this season aside from the How I Met Your Mother spinoff). In the end, after a slew of offers, the role couldn’t be cast on time for next fall but CBS plans to keep at it, rolling the pilot to the next development cycle. An adaptation of the hit French Canadian single-camera comedy created by and starring top Canadian comedian Patrick Huard, Taxi-22 is about a misanthropic and politically incorrect NYC cab driver in the vein of Archie Bunker.

CBS kicked off its pilot pickup season today with a order to Taxi-22, a single-camera comedy that had been shepherded by the late James Gandolfini. CBS bought the project, with Gandolfini on board to executive produce, in early June, just two weeks before the Emmy-winning actor’s tragic death. Taxi-22, an adaptation of the hit French Canadian single-camera comedy, had been a passion project for Gandolfini, who first developed it at HBO where his Attaboy banner had a deal. The project went through three incarnations at the pay cable network with different writers and Gandolfini loosely attached to play the lead at one point. When the project, about a misanthropic and politically incorrect NYC cab driver in the vein of Archie Bunker, was sold to CBS in June, there was no writer attached, with Gandolfini executive producing alongside Dennis Erdman and Clark Peterson, the original series’ creator/star, top Canadian comedian Patrick Huard,...

With his untimely passing at the age of 51 on Wednesday (June 19), James Gandolfini not only leaves behind a family and a remarkable body of work, but also a handful of unfinished TV projects.
Both as an actor and a producer under his Attaboy Prod. shingle, Gandolfini had quite a bit in various stages of development at the time of his death. Out of respect, and because of the time needed to consider such things, there is no word yet on how the "Sopranos" actor's death will affect any of the projects, but here's a look at just what is in limbo with Gandolfini's tragic passing:
- "Bone Wars": An HBO Films production meant to reunite Gandolfini and his "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" co-star Steve Carell, with both men starring as Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh, famous paleontologists who became rivals after the Civil War. When James Gandolfini's life was tragically cut short in Rome, Italy, on June 19, the fates of several of the actor's projects -- for film and TV -- suddenly became less clear.
Gandolfini, who was 51 at the time of his passing, reportedly as a result of a heart attack, had two projects in the works at HBO, reports Deadline: a movie called "Bone Wars," in which the late actor and Steve Carell were slated to co-star as paleontologists, and the seven-part series "Criminal Justice," about an ambulance-chasing NYC attorney, played by Gandolfini. It's not yet clear what will happen with either project, considering "Bone Wars" didn't yet have a script and filming for "Criminal Justice" hadn't progressed beyond the pilot.
"Criminal Justice" director Steven Zaillian remembers Gandolfini as "a real man, like they don't make anymore: honest, humble, loyal, complicated, as grateful for his success as he was unaffected by it,...

Darren Star's next TV project is an adaptation of a book -- no surprise there, considering his work as creator of "Sex and the City" and executive producer of "Gcb" and "Kitchen Confidential," both of which were based on books.
What the new project doesn't have in common with the others, though, is that a child will be at the center of it. Star will develop an adaptation of "The Honest Toddler," a newly published book based on the website and Twitter feed of writer Bunmi Laditan, Deadline reports.
The Honest Toddler purports to be observations of life and the strange behavior of adults through the eyes of a 2-year-old. Sample tweets: "All this talk about flaunting your curves but strip naked in a public library and you're the bad guy. The librarian clearly said 'Make yourself comfortable.' FX has bought a drama pitch from L.A. Confidential author James Ellroy and producers Joe Roth and Clark Peterson. Based on Ellroy’s 2012 novella Shakedown, the project is set in the tabloid world and underbelly of Los Angeles circa the late 1950s and centers on the city’s top informant/operator/wire tapper/fixer, Fred Otash, who lives and works where the glamour and the grime intersect. A fictionalized version of legendary Hollywood vice cop-turned-private eye Otash, who exposed the sins of the rich and famous in the 1950s magazine Confidential, also appeared in Ellroy’s novels The Cold Six Thousand and Blood’s a Rover. Ellroy, repped by CAA and manager Joel Gotler, is writing Shakedown and will executive produce the series with Roth, Peterson, Steven Hoban and Palak Patel for FX Prods. This marks a return to FX for Ellroy, who developed cop drama Throwdown Gun at the network two years ago.
