Well-versed in the modern period drama with a twist, director Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, The Favourite) had a simple edict for the costume design of Poor Things. As British costume designer Holly Waddington notes, “He didn’t want it to be like a period drama, he didn’t want it to be like a sci-fi film, and he didn’t want it to be too ‘fashiony.’ ” The result is Age of Innocence meets surrealism meets couture.
Adapted from Alasdair Gray’s novel, Searchlight’s Poor Things is a fantastical feminist fairy tale on steroids, where the character Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is brought back to life with the brain of an inquisitive, no-holds-barred toddler by the Frankensteinish Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Set against a backdrop of London, Lisbon, Paris and Alexandria, the costumes support the narrative of a young woman’s social and sexual awakening.

North Hollywood’s United American Costume Company has been dressing Hollywood since 1977. The company counts costume designers Sandy Powell, Arianne Phillips and Ellen Mirojnick among its clients, and has provided outfits for “Yellowstone” as well as “American Horror Story.” But with the writers and actors on strike, the business is in danger. “I could survive probably five months, but I would be left with nothing,” says the company’s owner, Diana Foster.
Across Hollywood and beyond, acute economic uncertainty is facing Foster and her employees and many other businesses. The shutdown doesn’t just mean that members of the actors and writers guilds are going without paychecks — in many cases, it’s left below-the-line workers out of work or fearful they may soon be jobless. For the people who provide the ball gowns and suits of armor that actors wear onscreen, the situation is growing more dire.

Zera — whose works include production design for Giuseppe Tornatore’s The Unknown Woman (2006), Paolo Virzì’s Like Crazy (2016) and Michele Placido’s Caravaggio’s Shadow (2022) — most recently created the sets for Roman Polanski’s The Place, which will have its world premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival next month. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Madonna was due to perform one of the final shows on her Drowned World Tour at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. By noon, the show had been rescheduled and the world had changed irrevocably.
After completing the tour, she wasted little time before getting straight back in the studio with producer Mirwais, with whom she had created most of 2000’s Music. Shaken by 9/11, Madonna was in a period of introspection, telling reporters that fame and fortune had made her oblivious to the gruesome realities of the world.

Los Angeles, March 26 (Ians) New photographs have emerged from the production, unveiling singer-actress Lady Gaga’s costume and make-up for the upcoming film ‘Joker: Folie A Deux’.
The photographs appear to showcase a large crowd scene, with Gotham police officers escorting Gaga’s character into a government building. Extras dressed as protesters gather around the star, holding signs with messages such as “Free Joker”, “Justice 4 Joker”, “Joker Marry Me” and “No Justice Not Guilty Not Joking”. Among the crowd are a smattering of colourful wigs and clown masks, of course, reports ‘Variety’.
Gaga’s costume by Oscar-nominated Arianne Phillips cuts between the heightened sensibility of the comic book source material and the gnarly aesthetic of the first ‘Joker’ film.
While it has yet to be officially confirmed that Gaga is playing Harley Quinn, the scarlet jacket and diamond-print blouse certainly would suggest that, not to mention the romantic messaging among...

“Elvis” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 27. It prevailed over two of its Oscar rivals, “Babylon” and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” plus “Don’t Worry Darling” and “The Woman King.”
In a sign of its strength, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Those films round out the Oscar race for Best Costume Design. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2023 Oscars reaped bids on January 12 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Babylon,””Elvis,” and “The Woman King” contend here in the period picture category against “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” and “Don’t Worry Darling,” which rank seventh and 21st in our Oscar odds respectively.
The Oscar frontrunner, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Hocus Pocus 2” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Our fifth predicted Oscar nominee, “The Fabelmans,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.

“Most of it lies within the subjectivity of Florence Pugh‘s character; the character of Alice is what drives the visual language of the movie,” declares two-time Oscar nominated cinematographer Matthew Libatique about the voyeuristic framing of the central character in “Don’t Worry Darling.” For our recent webchat he adds, “that’s where we really played and I think that’s where the film really exists. Seeing her small within the confines of this ‘dollhouse’ and seeing her from outside the glass looking back in. She’s almost metaphorically encapsulated into a space. It just happens to be a wonderfully beautiful space. She’s doing this fifties housework, she’s cooking breakfast for him every morning before he leaves, and she has dinner ready every time he comes home. What is this world? For us it was really about having the camera either very far away from her and making her small inside this space,...

For our recent webchat she adds that Wilde “is so hands on, she cares about every detail, she’s obsessive and collaborative and she’s one of the most amazing people to work with, because she does have vision, but she’s so interested in hearing other people’s ideas and creating the world together,” Byron says. “When she has something very specific in her mind like this, you bend over backwards to make it happen.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you have seen “Don’t Worry Darling,” in theaters now.
Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” is set in the blissful utopia of the Victory Project in the 1950s. Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles) are residents in the insular desert town, where husbands routinely drive off to work, wives wave goodbye, take ballet lessons and prepare dinner. It’s a “Stepford Wives” scenario.
But all is not right, as the women must stay away from their husbands’ office building, Victory HQ, and aren’t allowed to know what they do for work. Soon enough, Alice starts to suspect that even bigger secrets lie underneath the surface of their idealistic life. After a neighbor disappears, she digs deeper.
In the film’s second-act twist, viewers learn that the Victory Project is a present-day VR world where men can control women and turn them into “perfect wives.

Reports of a “screaming match” between Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh on the set of “Don’t Worry Darling” are “absurd gossip,” according to a Sunday statement signed by 40 crew members.
“As a crew, we’ve avoided addressing the absurd gossip surrounding the movie we’re so proud of, but feel the need to correct the anonymous ‘sources’ quoted in a recent article,” reads the statement obtained by TheWrap. “There was never a screaming match between our director and anyone, let alone a member of our cast.”
The statement follows a Friday report from Vulture in which an anonymous source recalled a “screaming match” between Wilde and Pugh. The report said then-studio head Toby Emmerich had to intervene and moderate a “long negotiation process” to ensure that Pugh would participate in the movie’s press promotion and “not jeopardize the potential box office.”

Forty members of the crew and production team on Olivia Wilde’s new movie Don’t Worry Darling have spoken out to dispute “the absurd gossip” surrounding alleged on-set unrest during the production of the New Line Cinema pic starring Harry Styles, Florence Pugh and Chris Pine.
The statement, received by Deadline, comes in direct response to a recent report in Vulture about an on-set “screaming match” between Wilde, who directed as well as co-starred, and Pugh, the female lead, during the pic’s 2021 production.

Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh did not have a “screaming match” on the set of Don’t Worry Darling, according to the film’s crew.
The psychological thriller, which was released on Friday (23 September), has been plagued with reports of behind-the-scenes drama, in particularly regarding an alleged feud between director Wilde and star Pugh.
A recent report by Vulture, citing an anonymous source who spent a significant amount of time on set, alleged that the pair even once got into a verbal altercation on set.
According to the source, news of the hostility got back to studio executives, with Warner Bros’s Toby Emmerich forced to step in as a referee of a “long negotiation process” to guarantee Pugh’s participation in the film “in any way”.

A group of 40 crew members that worked on the production of “Don’t Worry Darling” issued a joint statement on Saturday, disputing a report that director Olivia Wilde and lead Florence Pugh got into an argument on the set of the film.

No matter what your feelings are about "Don't Worry, Darling" — and everyone and their mother seems to have plenty — it's obvious that Olivia Wilde's sophomore feature at the very least has some fantastic visuals and production design. The thriller film's retro setting in a 1950s town called Victory, California offers up plenty of opportunities for its cast to dress to the nines. Whether it's stifled housewife Alice's (Florence Pugh) gorgeous dresses and aprons or the suits her husband Jack (Harry Styles) dons to go to his mysterious job, everyone in this movie conveys a polished sense of style.
/Film's Jack Giroux spoke with costume designer Arianne Phillips about the process of curating outfits for each character — even when, in the case of pop star Styles, the looks in question contradicted the actor's own signature style. Human beings have a natural resistance to change. Every time anything in someone's life is thrown off course, from their daily routine to their preconceived notions about the world, people find themselves either adjusting or resisting. The numerous instances of anti-progressive thought that can be seen in society today (especially that coming from cisgendered white men) are proof positive of this continual phenomenon, and thus the arts — being the bastion of cultural commentary that they are — react accordingly.
Olivia Wilde's second feature as a director, "Don't Worry Darling," is the latest in an increasingly large wave of socially conscious horror and genre pictures. While some of the pitfalls of this trend can certainly be seen in the film, its themes of feminism and misogyny combined with its surprisingly compelling ambiguity makes it a more fascinating experience than its tabloid-style press tour would indicate.

Costume designer Arianne Phillips is no stranger to working on midcentury films. From Brad Pitt’s Hawaiian shirt in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” to Reese Witherspoon’s perky frocks in “Walk the Line,” she’s at home with a variety of 1950s looks.
For Olivia Wilde’s dystopian thriller “Don’t Worry Darling,” opening Sept. 23 after bowing at the Venice Film Festival, Phillips channeled a look that was grounded in that era without being ultra-realistic. The film’s stars — Wilde, Florence Pugh, Harry Styles and Chris Pine — look like they’re living a carefree Rat Pack lifestyle, but something is off-kilter.
In a seemingly idyllic desert town, the men go to work each day at a company known as the Victory Project. The women clean their immaculate houses, take ballet lessons or sip martinis by the pool. When one woman disappears, Pugh’s character, Alice, starts asking questions.

There’s no denying Olivia Wilde can direct the hell out of a movie. And with her latest behind-the-camera effort, “Don’t Worry Darling,” the actress turned filmmaker constructs a sexy and suspenseful thriller.
It’s a film that should resonate with moviegoers, who may show up to check out an easy-on-the-eyes ensemble that includes Florence Pugh, Harry Styles and Chris Pine. At the very least, it’s a film that will continue to generate plenty of chatter. However, like most popcorn thrillers, the chances of the Academy checking the film off on their ballots is as farfetched as the movie’s attempt to make Harry Styles look unattractive in one critical scene. Nice try, but I don’t buy it.
The end product is a smorgasbord of high octane thrillers, similar to “Gone Girl” (2014), which landed a single nom for its leading actress Rosamund Pike. Pugh, a previous nominee for “Little Women,...

I never start a review commenting on whatever the so-called Film Twitter Mafia have to say about it, sight unseen. Starting back at CinemaCon in April when its directo/co-star Olivia Wilde was served legal papers onstage regarding her custody hearings with ex Jason Sudeikis, there has been non-stop gossip about her movie Don’t Worry Darling. There has been so much of it, right up to today’s Venice Film Festival press conference (covered by my colleague Nancy Tartaglione) that you almost have to address the elephant in the room. Others can do that, but let us not forget there is also a movie here, one I was able to preview as just that a few weeks ago in Burbank. As a reviewer, to quote Being There’s Chauncey Gardner, “I like to watch,” and that means only what is on the screen.

New Line Cinema’s anticipated psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling was confirmed this morning for an Out of Competition slot at the Venice Film Festival (August 31 – Sep 10) and the studio has confirmed that director Olivia Wilde and stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan and Chris Pine will tread the red carpet.
Wilde’s sophomore feature follows Alice (Pugh) and Jack (Styles) who seem lucky to be living in the idealized community of Victory, an experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret Victory Project and their families. The 1950s societal optimism espoused by their CEO, Frank (Pine)—equal parts corporate visionary and motivational life coach—anchors every aspect of daily life in the tight-knit desert utopia.
While the husbands spend every day inside the Victory Project Headquarters, working on the “development of progressive materials,” their wives—including Frank’s elegant partner, Shelley (Chan)—get to spend their time enjoying the beauty,...

For years, costume designers have been fighting for pay equity — an issue thrown into sharp relief by the difference in remuneration between the largely female Costume Designers Guild and the predominantly male members of the Art Directors Guild.
But an equally growing concern bubbling away under the surface has been a lack of costume designers’ involvement in the off-screen monetization of their designs. As Variety recently reported, when Disney collaborated with fashion brand Rag & Bone on an officially licensed “Cruella” collection to tie in with the new live-action film, “Cruella” costume designer Jenny Beavan didn’t see a dime. In fact, she didn’t even know a collaboration was in the works until she spotted the news on social media.
Now, costume designers want change. The objective is to be seen as an asset not only to the aesthetic of the film but, more holistically, in marketing, promotion and box office success.

“Whether you’re a film fan or a filmmaker, to be able to learn about the artistry of filmmaking and all the artists is something that’s an extension of my purpose,” says Phillips, who has donated a cache of costumes to the institution, including a prototype dress for Reese Witherspooon from “Walk the Line” and an array of pieces from “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” “I actually owned all the costumes from ‘Hedwig,’ which was part of the deal I made, because it was made on a prayer and a dime,” she explains.

With deserving artisans having taken home their Oscars, Variety looks ahead to the below-the-line contributions for films voters might see on the ballot next year.
Wes Anderson’s much-anticipated “The French Dispatch,” about a fictional American magazine based in France, includes the work of many of his frequent collaborators: Composer Alexandre Desplat, production designer Adam Stockhausen and costumer designer Milena Canonera all won Oscars on the director’s similarly quirky “The Grand Budapest Hotel”; cinematographer Robert D. Yeoman was nominated.
Liesl Tommy’s biopic of Aretha Franklin, “Respect,” stars Jennifer Hudson as the Queen of Soul. Kris Bowers, recently nominated as co-director for short doc, is the composer. Tony-winning costume designer Clint Ramos and Dp Kramer Morgenthau (a five-time Emmy nominee) are cross- over candidates.
Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” showcases his design team as it steps back into the ’80s in this true-crime tale that mixes murder and fashion.

Just over ten years ago, Inception arrived in cinemas (remember those?) like a well-dressed jigsaw puzzle and caused us all brain ache. As twisty, knotty, turny now as it ever was, director Christopher Nolan’s dazzling sci-fi adventure also remains one of the chicest attired movies of all time. In honour of Inception being a decade old, we caught up with its costume designer, Academy Award nominee, BAFTA and Costume Designer’s Guild winner, Jeffrey Kurland. Not so much an interview, more a reminiscing chat as Mr. Kurland recounts his approach to the film, costume clues and unmissable sock moments. Plus we even cover that apparent ‘shirt malfunction’ from one of his more recent movies, Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018). He won’t be drawn on his next film for Christopher Nolan though, Tenet. Well, not much…
Let’s do some memory lane.
