Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev is in the Kremlin's hospital outside Moscow, the Associated Press confirms.
The former president's spokesman, Vladimir Polyakov, tells the AP Gorbachev was taken to the hospital for routine testing. He did not provide any further details.
Gorbachev's health has been in decline in recent months. In March 2013, the political leader reportedly complained of health problems during a public lecture. In April, illness kept Gorbachev from attending former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's funeral.
Gorbachev was President of the Soviet Union at the time of its collapse in 1991. Since that time he has remained active in Russian politics and world affairs. Gorbachev met with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden as recently as 2009. His Gorbachev Foundation is headquartered in San Francisco.
