ABC has passed on three more pilots. Drama Acts of Crime and comedies Black Don’t Crack and Bucktown will not be picked up to series. They join comedy pilot Adopted, whose team was notified of ABC’s decision not to proceed with it Thursday night.
None of these pilots had stood out in the past months or so, with the frontrunners among ABC’s 2021 pilots produced before the upfronts, The Wonder Years, Queens, Maggie and Abbott Elementary all landing series pickups earlier today.
Meanwhile, several pilots were left in consideration for midseason, including Kevin Costner’s National Parks Investigation, which was filmed but not finished in time for the upfronts, drama pilots Epic, Promised Land and Dark Horse, which have not been shot, and off-cycle drama pilot Triage, which has undergone recuts with conflicting results.
Acts of Crime, written and directed by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, marked Esmail’s first foray into broadcast television.

Here’s a quick question that should serve as a surreal gut-check for modern entertainment: How many episodes of “Queen America,” the latest serialized offering for Facebook’s 2 billion-plus users, are available now?
Figure it out? Did you have to quickly Google “Queen America Facebook” or scan Catherine Zeta-Jones’ IMDb page first? Odds are high outside research was required, given that three episodes of “Queen America” quietly dropped Monday on Facebook Watch, marking the latest attempt by the streaming giant to stand out in the market for streaming options.
Created by Meaghan Oppenheimer (co-writer on the under-appreciated 2015 Zac Efron DJ picture “We Are Your Friends”), “Queen America” is one of those half-hour shows billed as a “black comedy” but that’s really just a drama with a few caustic jokes. In the pilot, Zeta-Jones’ popular beauty pageant coach tears up an Australian contest judge, dropping belittling joke after belittling joke...

The migration of movie stars to television has resulted in some series that seem divinely ordained — from Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in “Big Little Lies” to Billy Bob Thornton and Kirsten Dunst on “Fargo” — and others that feel significantly more random. “Queen America,” which forces an Oscar winner to tamp down all that’s best about her persona, is one of the latter cases. Catherine Zeta-Jones is a gifted star whose aura of outsizedness already feels difficult to contain on television — or, for that matter, on Facebook Watch, the finding-its-feet platform on which she appears on “Queen America.” In the series, a black comedy (or is it a drama with occasional jokes?) about the desperate hangers-on in the beauty pageant scene, Zeta-Jones feels constrained by the show’s sensibility and its sour lack of ambition. That she fights as hard as she can to avoid being sucked into the...

It’s been a rough year for beauty pageant stories. “Queen America,” the latest entry in the growing Facebook Watch original programming library, at least has Catherine Zeta-Jones to help guide it through.
The latest trailer for the series shows Zeta-Jones playing Oklahoma pageant whisperer Vicki Jones, who’s tasked with helping shape an unpredictable aspiring contestant Samantha (Belle Shouse) into a winner. Putting her reputation on the line, it seems like Vicki will learn plenty of lessons about image, self-worth, and good heartland values along the way.
Samantha is Vicki’s main project, but plenty of other people will enter her orbit over the course of the 10-episode season, set to premiere later this month on Facebook Watch. This trailer is a little vague who’ll be watching from the sidelines, and who’s exactly enthusiastic about having Vicki around in the first place, but there’s also the...

“No one likes a pretty girl who expects big things to happen to her,” says Vicki Ellis a renowned and ruthless pageant coach played by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the new trailer for the dark comedy Queen America which debuts on Facebook Watch on November 21.
In the new 30-second trailer, Zeta-Jones tries to whip Samantha (Belle Shouse) into shape so that she can go from an unpolished young woman to a winning pageant queen. Zeta-Jones gives some sharp-tongue commentary and it is clear that Vicki will do anything to win in the landscape of brutal pageant competition.
Additional cast includes Judith Light, Jennifer Westfeldt, Victoria Justice, Teagle Bougere, Rana Roy, Isabella Amara, Molly Price and Megan West.

Though she’s been offered the chance to play Bette Davis her entire career, Susan Sarandon wasn’t keen on bringing a caricature of the iconic actress to the screen, especially in a movie that didn’t dig deep into her story. “It’s not enough to think Bette Davis is cool,” Sarandon tells Et. “What do you do with her then? You have to feel a little bit for Steve Coogan, who will face, in every review and interview for the upcoming Showtime series "Happyish," a comparison to Philip Seymour Hoffman. The late actor was attached to star in the series before his tragic death last year, and after a pause, the network decided to press on, swapping in Coogan for Hoffman. But credit to Coogan for clearly making the role his own. The first trailer for "Happyish" is here and Coogan fits the role of an uncomfortably, unhappy middle-aged man quite perfectly. Co-starring Kathryn Hahn, Bradley Whitford, Ellen Barkin, Carrie Preston, Molly Price, and Andre Royo, the show centers on a mid-40s man whose career is thrown for a loop when he gets a new, much younger, social media savvy boss. Coogan has a bit of a Woody Allen thing going on, but with just enough of his own...

Now when we know that Emma Watson is no longer attached to play the female lead in Kenneth Branagh‘s upcoming Cinderella movie, the big question is – who will take her place? Here we go, choose one name: Bella Heathcote, Lily James or Margot Robbie, because these three actresses are apparently testing for the role. Man, the Fairy Godmother was absolutely right when she said that even miracles take a little time! So, what do you think, who should play the well-known character? Dark Shadows star Bella Heathcote reminds me a little bit of Cinderella, but I’m not sure if she’s the perfect actress for...

Chicago – It seems impossible today to get a sense of what it was like around 1964, when rock music changed forever with the “British Invasion” of The Beatles. But writer/director David Chase (“The Sopranos”) brings that distinct energy back with the nostalgic and incendiary “Not Fade Away.”
Rating: 5.0/5.0
The second wave of the “invasion,” which included The Rolling Stones, is the inspiration for the 18-year-old boy in New Jersey, whose life is about to change forever because of the sonic blast from overseas. The fab wonder of “Not Fade Away” is that it feels in the moment, so it’s not about the cars, trends or clothing of the era – although that is letter perfect – it is about the music, and the effect the music has on a generation lost in space. It’s time to join the band, and the process of doing that – with all the riffs and sorrows – is achingly portrayed,...

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Carissa: Really, that talk at the end cannot be beat. I've always been a huge fan of Aidan Quinn and have wondered why he chose a supporting role. That material against Jonny Lee Miller finally gave him the light he deserved. It was beautifully played on both sides. Anyone who had doubts about Elementary should have been greatly pleased by that scene. It showed great depth and hints of where Elementary can take us in the future.

Not Doctor Watson of course, because that role belongs to Lucy Liu (Joan Watson). Instead, David Harbour has landed an Elementary guest star gig as Dr. Mason Baldwin. TVline describes Mason as a brilliant surgeon who will for some reason is tagged as an “unlikely” source of help for Jonny Lee Miller’s modern Sherlock Holmes.
While you might have recently caught Harbour in HBO’s freshmen season of Newsroom, his background seems to be in film, or rather, you probably have seen a movie with him in it, as he’s in some rather large movies like Quantum of Solace, State of Play, Revolutionary Road, Brokeback Mountain, and Green Hornet. He was also the double agent in Pan Am, a show on ABC that I actually didn’t hate (though certainly I saw the limitations of), but got the boot after season 1. Given the massive appeal of its cast, perhaps I ought to start paying more attention to A Late Quartet. Now’s the perfect time, actually, as Variety have informed us it’ll be hitting by the end of 2012 — on November 2nd, specifically, with eOne and Rko (we live in 1937) picking the slot.
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Christopher Walken, and Mark Ivanir star as a New York City string musician group trying to combat problems in their personal life — in particular, the elder member’s Parkinson’s — in order to create great music; Imogen Poots and Wallace Shawn also chip in some work.
Directing is Yaron Zilberman, who’s only made one other film — the sports documentary Watermarks — a career fact which only leaves me more confident in Quartet. Why else would all these actors come aboard unless the script was great? They’re not getting studio money here, for crying out loud.

One of the major question marks of the fall season was the directorial debut of Sopranos creator David Chase. Set for release in just over two months, there’s been no stills, trailers, posters or anything for his drama Not Fade Away. But question no more, as the Film Society of Lincoln Center have announced the film will premiere as a centerpiece at their 50th New York Film Festival.
We’ve also got the first stills today which feature his longtime collaborator, the lead of Sopranos James Gandolfini, as well as the rest of the cast. The film is described as “a rich and tender portrait of a group of kids in 1960s New Jersey trying to capture the rock and roll dream by starting their own band. All the while, they must navigate the shifting social mores of the decade and the timeless pitfalls of suburban adolescence.”

The fall season’s new Sherlock Holmes series, Elementary, is sure to bring in a number of curious viewers based purely on its premise – I’ll get to that in a bit – but more is needed beyond a quirky set up. For a Sherlock Holmes show to work you need very interesting guest characters to highlight the various cases Sherlock will have to crack. A sure fire way to go about finding the absolute best is to pluck the most memorable actors and actresses from other shows. The fourth episode of the freshman series has done just that by snagging Craig Bierko and Molly Price of Boston Legal and Third Watch respectively.
As reported by TVLine, Bierko will be playing Fowkes, the imposing CEO of a big time Wall Street financial firm. He’ll be involved in a murder investigation because, well, this is a Sherlock Holmes story. There’s almost always a murder.

Shameless 2.02 "I'll Light A Candle For You Every Day" Review
Shameless season 2 stumbles upon its third entry with this week’s "I'll Light A Candle For You Every Day," as Frank Gallagher continues wooing the ailing Dottie (Molly Price), while Fiona flirts with disaster by meetingup with her married high school crush Craig (Taylor Kinney). Unlike last week's "Summer Loving," this week's Shameless breaks the bank a bit on asking us to accept Frank's horrible behavior, however entertaining.
There’s a big gap between comically cruel, and just plain despicable. I’m thinking of your Benders, your Al Bundys, your Barney Stinsons, those with inherently selfish behavior but with enough good and self-awareness to keep us empathizing with them through their worst acts.
This fine balance is something Showtime has yet to achieve with William H. Macy’s Frank Gallagher in Shameless. Sure we’ll see him look out for his children now and again,...

A man wakens in the morning and cleanses himself for prayer. He's a Muslim and in order to pray he should have been clothed not half naked! Walid (Walid Amini) meets his friend at the bus stop and he tells him he can have his notes as he won't be needing them anymore; implying he's about to do something like ending his life. Walid's friend can't get on the bus as he doesn't have fare. Moments later the bus explodes. He could have borrowed money from his friend. But not getting on he makes it look like he knows what is about to happen, the suicide aspect aside. This episode was filmed 2009 and appeared to be rather insensitive to the 7/7 bombings in London, choosing the bus as the target. Walid is viewed as the bomber more than his friend as he's still alive, they could have been in league together.

It's always fun to discuss next year's award season during this year's awards season. We're over a year away and fall 2012 is already populated with theoretical Oscar contenders like Oliver Stone's Savages, Kathryn Bigelow's Osama Bin Laden film, Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, Tom Hooper's Les Miserables and Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. (Most of which haven't even begun to shoot.) We haven't even gotten to Sundance and things are already getting crowded. Now Paramount is jumping into the mix as they've dated the currently untitled feature film directorial debut of [1] Sopranos creator David Chase for October 19, 2012. Formerly titled Twylight Zones, the autobiographical film [2] is about a bunch of New Jersey kids in the 1960s who form a garage band and stars James Gandolfini, Brad Garrett, Christopher McDonald, Molly Price, John Magaro, Lisa Lampanelli and Jack Huston. Deadline [3] broke the news of the release date, which came out at the Toronto Film Festival.
