Educated at Pembroke College, trained as a barrister and became liberal MP for Necastle-upon-Tyne in 1923. Turned to acting full-time after being defeated in elections six years later.
Served in World War I as a captain in the Royal Scots, saw action in Gallipoli and Palestine and was awarded a Military Cross.
