New Delhi, April 14 (Ians) Her influence persists in Bollywood even after her name has faded from public memory, althrough remixes of her rollicking hits from the 1950s continue to be in circulation. Another, and not that well-known, legacy of Shamshad Begum, though, was initiating what later became “item numbers”, though her contributions were more perky than provocative, saucy than raunchy, and racy without being ribald.
And then, they were delivered in a robust voice, whose clarity was compared to a temple bell by composer O.P. Nayyar, with a full-blown gusto and sense of abandon.
“Udan khatole pe udh jaaun”, “Mere piya gaye Rangoon”, “Kabhi aar kabhi paar”, “Bisvi sadi hai ye bisvii sadi”, “Leke pehla pehla pyar”, “Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe nishana”, and “Boojh mera kya naam re” are prime examples.

Cinema can be a powerful medium for social transformation, and no one gauged it better than the legendary V Shantaram who used his memorable films to attack the malaise of untouchability and caste, forced marriages of young women to (rich) old men, dowry, communalism and regionalism, as well as to humanise policemen, prostitutes, and convicts.
And, he was not deterred when any of his courageous films ran afoul of vested interests.
When his “Apna Desh (Hindi)/Nam Nadu (Tamil)” (1949), an eloquent appeal against the deepening fault-lines threatening to destabilise the newly-independent country, faced an ill-informed and easily-swayed public and a malicious media campaign, there were powerful backers to ensure it faced no problems. These were no less than Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Morarji Desai, the then home ministers of India and Bombay state, his daughter recounted in his autobiography.

A tabla player with a prominent theatrical troupe, he went on to partner with a harmonium player to create – and guide – the duo that seamlessly melded the strains of Indian classical and popular music with Western melodies to create an array of immortal tunes for films starring titans, from Raj Kapoor to Shammi Kapoor to Rajesh Khanna.
Shankar-Jaiskishan was not the first duo to give music for Hindi films – that signal honour went to their own ustads Husnlal-Bhagatram – but they were the most successful, right from their first venture in 1949, down till the dawn of the 1970s.
Going just by the metric of Filmfare Awards, their record of the most Best Music Awards (nine) stood for nearly four decades till A R Rahman picked up his 10th in 2012. And though they were runners-up in most nominations (20), behind Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s 25, 10 of their nominations were in consecutive years since 1959.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has paid homage to 1959’s Asha Bhosle Holi chartbuster ‘Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat for Mere Pyare Prime Minister. Not only that he shoots it in a single take!
Now that’s how one would rather pay homage to a yesteryear chartbuster number.
In the era of recreated songs that mushroom practically every week, filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has done something different for his latest offering Mere Pyare Prime Minister. For a situation in the film that involved Holi celebrations, he has recreated Asha Bhosle sung ‘Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat’. However, instead of just picking the germ of the original and then turning it around totally, he has actually ensured that a large part of the song was retained with just a few new added elements.
