When it comes to the most influential sci-fi releases that popularised space operas, Star Wars is often the obvious pick, which broke industry records upon debuting back in 1977. Others would argue it’s Frank Herbert’s Dune, which hit the shelves back in 1965 and ended up revolutionizing the sci-fi landscape, serving as an inspiration for George Lucas’ Star Wars.
But while Dune was indeed a monumental success, it was Charlton Heston’s Planet of the Apes that laid the foundation for space operas on the silver screen.

The Dark Knight trilogy is considered, by some, the best superhero franchise ever made. The trio of films directed by Christopher Nolan, released between 2005 and 2012, are revered for their grown-up, adult crime drama vibe and cinematic scope.
Now Nolan’s brother and franchise co-writer Jonathan Nolan says he’d be down to return to the Batman universe.
In an interview promoting his hit Amazon series Fallout, Nolan was asked if he’d ever want to revisit the Batman franchise.
“Wouldn’t that be a dream?” Nolan said. “That period was 10 years of my life [from] when I got the call to work on Batman Begins, and it was epic. Working with Christian [Bale], Heath [Ledger], Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and to honor an American icon. If I had the chance to go back and work on that again? Absolutely.”

Let’s travel back to 2008 when the summer hit its fever pitch of the long-awaited Christopher Nolan superhero epic, The Dark Knight. I could remember it like it was yesterday when I was a sophomore in college reading up on all the production coverage I could find and rewatching those amazing trailers, following that online campaign and viral marketing, which was way ahead of its time. My presale tickets were bought; I was amped beyond words for what I was about to witness. I think it was the longest wait in a theatre line as well, clocking in three hours before seating on opening night at my local IMAX. Because, at that time, seats weren’t reserved, and it was a battle royale trying to get that coveted middle-row seat. Picture “Running of the Bulls” in Spain, but with people trying to get that damn middle row. Boy, how far...

On Monday April 22, 20th Century Studios’ all-new action-adventure spectacle, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, made a trip to Venice Beach to get some sun, catch some waves and promote the film to onlookers lucky enough to be there. The apes on horseback was a clever idea and looked very reminiscent of the original 1968 film Planet Of The Apes.
The film opens in movie theaters globally on May 10, 2024, and will be available in IMAX®, Dolby Cinema®, 4Dx, and premium screens everywhere. Be among the first to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on the big screen at the early access screening on May 8th.

You just can't keep those damn dirty apes down. 10 years after Tim Burton's 2001 "Planet of the Apes" re-imagining failed to reignite audiences' passion for stories about intellectually-enhanced simians, the long-running sci-fi franchise made an unexpectedly strong comeback with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Director Rupert Wyatt's entry in the series is now generally considered the weakest of the modern "Apes" trilogy, which is more of a testament to what Matt Reeves was able to accomplish with his subsequent sequels than necessarily a knock against Wyatt's film. "Rise" itself makes for an effective cautionary tale about humanity's hubris, our lack of compassion toward other living beings, and our habit of being our own worst enemy, as seen through the eyes of its co-protagonist, Caesar (Andy Serkis in his touchstone motion-capture role).
Yes, it's easy to forget that Caesar wasn't originally the singular lead of his own story.

For many fans, Bruce Timm’s Dcau gave the most definitive version of Batman. Matt Reeves’ The Batman took inspiration from Timm’s dark and gritty tone of the character in Batman: The Animated Series. Timm proved that he could develop feature-length animated movies, debuting with the Batman movie, Mask of the Phantasm. However, Timm never once got the call from DC or WB to create a live-action Batman film.
Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm could’ve done a great job with a live-action film
Timm knows that he missed his chance, admitting that he was too lazy to pursue the live-action project. He was even confident that he could come up with a decent movie, that was better than George Clooney’s Batman & Robin and reached somewhere near Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Nicolas Cage has showcased through his extreme performances that he can embody just about any character, be it a hero or a villain, as efficiently and intensely as possible. That said, it’s worth noticing that while his remarkable acting skills have also granted him the golden ticket into two of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, he has only been cast in heroic and anti-heroic roles.
Nicolas Cage in Dream Scenario.
While he has absolutely nailed it as all of those characters, the truth is that Cage actually wants to play one forgotten nemesis of Batman who has only ever been played by the late Vincent Price in the late 1960s: Egghead. What’s more, he wants to play the character in Matt Reeves’ franchise of the Dark Knight, and has let his feelings known to Warner Bros. about the same as well!

Vashon Film Institute has set the date for the third annual Vashon Island Film Festival, which is slated to take place Aug. 8-11. The announcement comes with the launch of two new divisions of the Vashon Film Institute and a new donation arm, which accepts restricted funds to be used solely to fund improvements at the Vashon Theatre.
Vfi’s new divisions are the Quartermaster Lab, a collective of filmmaking programs, and VFIpresents, its sales, distribution and release division, which will also focus on organizing community events outside Viff.
“The quintessential goal in founding Vfi was to support independent filmmaking in the Pacific Northwest,” said Mark Mathias Sayre, founder of Vashon Film Institute. “To that end, Viff has already brought compelling indie features and documentaries to local audiences and will continue to do so. Tim Daly was 3 years and 15 days old when his would-be childhood hero George Reeves was found dead of an apparent suicide at age 45. The man who played Superman would go on to inspire countless other adaptations of DC characters, including Adam West’s Batman in 1966. Later, Daly himself became the Man of Steel in a legendary run of Superman: The Animated Series that began in 1996 and lasted till 2012.

With Dune: Part Two and Civil War in theaters, it’s already been a great year for sci-fi, and that doesn’t even count goofball flicks like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, or any other movies with the word “empire” in the title. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pulled from the release schedule and there’s no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release this year. The disappointment that comes from seeing a great film do poorly at the box office almost certainly never goes away. One of the most important Batman storytellers of all time, Bruce Timm, does not seem to understand how good Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is.
Timm, who produced Batman: The Animated Series and co-directed Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, discussed how much he “cringe[s]” at the beloved animated 1993 Batman flick in an interview from last year. He noted that while the 1990s were a major decade for animation in motion pictures, the Kevin Conroy starrer was initially intended to be a television special.

The character of Batman has been part of pop culture for decades. With live-action adaptations and animated projects, this comic book superhero has been integral to fans all over the world. In 1992, when Batman: The Animated Series came into existence, it completely changed the landscape of superhero animations.

Jennifer Garner is opening up about her “emotional” audition for Felicity, which led to her crying in the bathroom afterward.
The 13 Going on 30 star, who made a guest appearance as Hannah Bibb, the ex-girlfriend of Noel Crane (Scott Foley), in the J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves-created series, recently locked back at her audition for what “must have been the breakup scene.”
“I remember the audition. I remember going into the bathroom after because the scene was so emotional and I needed to cry,” she said on The Ringer’s Dear Felicity podcast. “I needed to hide in the bathroom stall and finish the cry that I started in the audition because it was such a powerful scene.”
Garner claimed Abrams made her come back later to re-audition for the role, to which podcast host and former Felicity star Greg Grunberg quipped, “That makes sense to me, because you’re not very good.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.
According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll...

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

Technically speaking, the Year of the Monkey is still four years away, but 2024 apparently failed to get the memo. "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" got the party started by beating all early estimates and overperforming at the box office. Meanwhile, actor/director Dev Patel is doing everything in his power to turn himself into our next action star with the upcoming "Monkey Man," which is similarly poised to provide a much-needed boost among moviegoers for original movies. But as exciting as these offerings are, both of them might as well be the hors d'oeuvres and appetizers preceding the main course: "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."

The Planet of the Apes reboot series is still ongoing, even after the original trilogy has been officially concluded. The movie is officially releasing on May 10, 2024, with previews being available from May 8, 2024. Recently, we have reported of a new poster being released as part of the film’s promotion, but we now have news regarding the film’s runtime.

The Planet of the Apes reboot franchise has been one of the most successful reboots in history, with the new trilogy becoming a critical and commercial success. Led by Andy Serkis, the trilogy was built on a long tradition of similar films, managing to bring a lot of new elements, as well as keeping true to the idea of the original story. And while the trilogy ended, the reboot franchise is not dead, as a new sequel trilogy is planned, starting with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is set to be released on May 10, 2024, with early access screenings available starting with May 8, 2024.

Back in 2022 former freelance artist for DC Comics, Christopher Wozniak sued Warner Brothers for apparently plagiarising his work. Not long after ‘The Batman’ premiered, Wozniak expressed shock at Warner Bros., Matt Reeves, and Peter Craig, alleging they copied his story ‘The Ultimate Riddle,’ renamed ‘The Blind Man’s Hat.’ Wozniak promptly hired a lawyer, leading to a copyright infringement lawsuit dubbed “Batmangate.”
The original lawsuit, filed in October 2022, led to Warner Bros. countersuing Wozniak, arguing his story infringed on their copyright by including Batman characters without permission. Despite Wozniak’s defense, the judge ruled in DC’s favor, stating Reeves and Craig didn’t plagiarize Wozniak. Instead, Wozniak was found guilty of copyright infringement for using DC characters without authorization.

Although it has been a while since Matt Reeves’ The Batman premiered in theaters, the movie is still a hot topic as the 2022 lawsuit filed by Christopher Wozniak, a screenwriter and former freelance artist for DC Comics, has finally been settled. And while this news won’t overshadow recent production information on the upcoming sequel to Reeves’ hit film, it will certainly make the whole series an even hotter topic than it already is. In short, a judge ruled that The Batman is not a plagiarized version of Wozniak’s earlier story and that, in fact, it was Wozniak who committed an act of copyright infringement by using DC Comics characters in his story without, as it seems, clear permission.

The Batman was a refreshing change in the turbulent DC Extended Universe. Taking a different approach from earlier DC and Batman movies, this 2022 flick starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayn is essentially a noir-style mystery that highlights the superhero’s detective abilities in addition to his physical prowess.
Not only did it create a bleak new Gotham City, but it also featured some of the best performances from Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), and of course, Pattinson (Batman).
However, the film was met with some skepticism following Christopher Wozniak, a screenwriter and former freelance artist for DC Comics, filing a lawsuit against Warner Bros. for allegedly stealing the story from his script, The Ultimate Riddle.

Batman is a character that requires little introduction. With perhaps one of the most iconic rogues galleries in comic books, the character has a rich and varied mythology that resonates with more people than any other character, making him one of the flagship IPs that DC must get right more than not.

Matt Reeves, with his The Batman, was able to deliver to fans another version of Batman, one that was very well-received by audiences at large. However, the philosophy that Reeves adopted for Batman might also expose a key weakness for another upcoming Batman-adjacent film, an Elseworlds tale.

There are a bunch of DC projects coming up. Everyone’s excited about James Gunn’s DC Universe and his new ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman.’ But don’t forget about the Elseworlds projects, like ‘The Batman’ movie series, and other projects in the works like the upcoming ‘The Penguin’ show.
Last week, they dropped a teaser for ‘The Penguin’. It takes place a week after ‘The Batman’ and it’s all about Cobblepot making his way up in Gotham. Colin Farrell is coming back as ‘The Penguin’ – he got a lot of love for that role. In a recent interview, Farrell talked about what fans can expect from the show, and it doesn’t sound too pretty.
We wrapped it, man. We did it. Stuck a fork in it about two weeks ago. It was a long and really wonderful experience. And it’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it.

The next big thing is ‘The Penguin’ live-action series.
Last week the teaser for ‘The Penguin’ dropped. The show takes place one week after the events of ‘The Batman’ and will closely follow Cobblepot’s rise to power in Gotham. Colin Farrell is returning to the role of ‘The Penguin’ – the role for which he was highly praised. Now in the latest interview, Colin Farrell commented on what the fans can expect from the upcoming show, and it doesn’t sound pretty at all.
